Overcoming cognitive bias through intellectual capital management
Intellectual Capital as the sum of Human, Structural, and Relational Capital is among the key resources for an organization to produce value. However, knowledge as an intellectual resource may show a dark side. Human Capital, for instance, is often affected by cognitive bias coming from knowledge and beliefs. Cognitive bias may negatively affect decision-making processes. Bias may be dangerous in all fields. However, the situation can be particularly critical in medicine, where statistics state how up to 75% of all clinical errors are of cognitive origins. The chapter aims at investigating if and how intangibles management can help to overcome cognitive bias. The work employs a case study approach analyzing BACRI, a digital platform in the field of pediatric medicine. BACRI, which stands for "Critical Child" in Italian, allows identifying young patients at risk who need immediate care. The case study shows how the joint effect of Structural Capital, Human Capital, and Relational Capital is the key to the overcoming of cognitive bias, in a virtuous circle. Intangibles management can so limit the dark side of knowledge
How Genuino Applies Blockchain Technology in the Collectibles Industry
This chapter analyses the blockchain implemented by Genuino in the collectibles industry. Since collectibles are subject to high risk of counterfeiting and fake
replications, blockchain technology can help substantially to ensure transparency, originality, ownership, and data security and protection. Two methods to use
blockchain in the industry seem to be the most widespread today: creating digital native collectibles on blockchain and transposing physical objects into the blockchain by creating digital twins. By using blockchain, new consumer clusters emerge, highlighting the need to modernize both the traditional economies and the current business models
The Impact of Digital Technologies on Company Restoration Time Following the COVID-19 Pandemic
The global spread of COVID-19 affected societies and economies at large with simultaneous disruptions to both supply and demand. To investigate the implications of COVID-19, this study seeks to inquire into how companies can achieve resilience through performance robustness and how this affects the restoration time (i.e., the time period from the problem occurrence to the time when the company performance returns to the previous operational level). Moreover, it studies how digital technology adoption allowed firms to become more resilient during the COVID-19 outbreak by exploiting high robustness and improving restoration time. Our findings reveal that, among the several performance indicators investigated, only the robustness of Sales is of particular significance in contributing to restoration time. As regards the technologies deployed, Blockchain, 3D Printing, and Artificial Intelligence had a positive impact on firms’ resilience during the outbreak
Numerical studies to detect chaotic motion in the full planar averaged three-body problem
In this paper, the author deals with a well-known problem of Celestial Mechanics, namely the three-body problem. A numerical analysis has been done in order to prove existence of chaotic motions of the full-averaged problem in particular configurations. Full because all the three bodies have non-negligible masses and averaged because the Hamiltonian describing the system has been averaged with respect to a fast angle. A reduction of degrees of freedom and of the phase-space is performed in order to apply the notion of covering relations and symbolic dynamics
The role of blockchain for intellectual capital enhancement and business model innovation
Blockchain is considered as one of the most disruptive technologies, with an estimated growth from USD 1.2 billion in 2018 to USD 23.3 billion by 2023 worldwide. Blockchain has the potential to disrupt all business activities as much as the internet, social media, and mobile technologies did in the past. It enhances the creation of new business models, and forces organizations to work differently. The chapter aims to analyze the potentiality and the effects of blockchain on current and future business models from an intellectual capital perspective, by applying a Structured Literature Review (SRL) on the most recent scientific as well as professional production on the topic. The findings highlight how the design principles of blockchain technology can enhance the intellectual capital of an organization, as well as lead to a business model innovation
Business models for accelerators: A structured literature review
Purpose:This paper aims to provide a better understanding of accelerators’ phenomenon, developing a business model framework for these organizations. The proposed framework aims to offer helpful guidance for practitioners and policymakers, together with various research opportunities for scholars.
Design/Methodology/Approach:The study employs a structured literature review methodology, which guarantees the repeatability of the research and the validity of the outcomes. Additionally, to further test the results of our analysis, we interviewed ten practitioners from some accelerators located in Italy and Slovenia.
Findings:Findings show that the literature on accelerators is still fragmented and under-investigated. The presented framework for an accelerator business model provides insights about the activity and the role of such organizations. The study offers fruitful avenues for future research on accelerators’ business models.
Research limitations/implications:Given the fragmented nature and the novelty of the literature on the topic, there may be relevant papers and reports missing in our analysis. Further research should investigate the role of accelerators in the ecosystem they operate in and provide a clear and shared definition in collaboration with all stakeholders.
Practical implications:The presented framework provides practitioners with useful insights for understanding an accelerator activity and valuable recommendations for managing these organizations in the future.
Social implications:Since we consider society among the key stakeholders of an accelerator’s business model, this study provides significant insights about the social impact of accelerators in the ecosystem they operate in. Relevant implications may be useful especially for policymakers.
Originality/Value:The main contribution of this study is the extent analysis of a novel topic in the entrepreneurial literature, providing a clear and broad perspective of the phenomenon. Furthermore, this study provides relevant insights on the role of accelerators in academic research as well as for practitioners and policymakers
Una piattaforma tecnologica per riconoscere le infezioni gravi in ambito pediatrico. Il progetto BaCri
The "BaCri" project was conceived by the Burlo Garofolo Scientific Research Institute of Trieste as a prospective and multicenter study. The project aims to support the pediatrician in the early recognition of those clinical conditions in which, despite the lack of symptoms of a severe bacterial infection, this hypothesis could occur. Data is collected through a platform based on Cloud Computing technology powered by the pediatrician. The BaCri platform allows to recognize and alert critical clinical situations. The project has several goals: overcoming clinical bias, enhancing knowledge translation to strengthen the relationships and communication with the local community, increasing the pediatric knowledge, verifying the appropriateness of the prescriptions of therapies and diagnostic tests, and stimulate co-production and patient engagement logics
