On D-modules related to the b-function and Hamiltonian flow
Let f be a quasi-homogeneous polynomial with an isolated singularity in Cn . We compute the length of the D -modules Df/Df+1 generated by complex powers of f in terms of the Hodge filtration on the top cohomology of the Milnor fiber. When =−1 we obtain one more than the reduced genus of the singularity ( dimHn−2(Z,OZ) for Z the exceptional fiber of a resolution of singularities). We conjecture that this holds without the quasi-homogeneous assumption. We also deduce that the quotient Df/Df+1 is nonzero when is a root of the b -function of f (which Saito recently showed fails to hold in the inhomogeneous case). We obtain these results by comparing these D -modules to those defined by Etingof and the second author which represent invariants under Hamiltonian flow
RECIFE: Cinquante ans d'interprétation géographique
A geographical approach to the town makes for a consensual vision of urban problems within the organisms responsable for planning. Consequently a certain importance must be attached to the analysis of this approach. The author identifies the key concepts which have counted in the geographical production concerning the town of Recife : urban landscape history of the town's development, town and country relationships in the regional context of the Nordeste. The analysis of works by three geographers from Pernambuco is completed by the analysis of a sociologist's approach to urban planning. These are confronted with the point of view of planners. The near and far: Hermeneutics of the cannibal in Jean de Léry
Jean de Léry belongs to the literary canon of the sixteenth century essentially for his, Histoire d'un voyage faict en la terre du Brésil. The objective of this study is to mark a distinct trajectory, aiming to bring out into the light Léry's other text, the Histoire memorable de la ville de Sancerre, published in 1574. I argue that the latter text engages and makes possible the writing of the Histoire d'un voyage sheds light on it. At the origin of this study, there is an enigma: Why did Léry wait twenty years to write his Histoire d'un voyage? What's more, why is this text so often reworked and revised? The world is changing, so too does the text, this text of Léry will remain open, it will be constantly revised during the life of the author and there will be no less than five distinct editions before Léry's death, in 1613. The reading of the Histoire memorable brings forth the essential question and the basis of this study: the question of the near and the far, the question of difference and alterity. There lies the cornerstone of the leryan architecture. Léry affirms in his preface that it is the Cosmographie of Thevet which engages and makes possible the writing of his Histoire d'un voyage. However, what he demonstrates and proves without any ambiguity in all editions of the Histoire d'un voyage , is the link between the two "Histoires" the "memorable" one of the city of Sancerre and the one of the "voyage" in the land of Brazil, in which the cannibal act is the thread that binds them, red thread from the blood of the sacrificed, red thread from the ink of Brazil
BERNSTEIN-SATO THEORY FOR SINGULAR RINGS IN POSITIVE CHARACTERISTIC
The Bernstein-Sato polynomial is an important invariant of an element or an ideal in a polynomial ring or power series ring of characteristic zero, with interesting connections to various algebraic and topological aspects of the singularities of the vanishing locus. Work of Mustaţă, later extended by Bitoun and the third author, provides an analogous Bernstein-Sato theory for regular rings of positive characteristic.
In this paper, we extend this theory to singular ambient rings in positive characteristic. We establish finiteness and rationality results for Bernstein-Sato roots for large classes of singular rings, and relate these roots to other classes of numerical invariants defined via the Frobenius map. We also obtain a number of new results and simplified arguments in the regular case

ZCWPW1 is recruited to recombination hotspots by PRDM9 and is essential for meiotic double strand break repair
During meiosis, homologous chromosomes pair and recombine, enabling balanced segregation and generating genetic diversity. In many vertebrates, double-strand breaks (DSBs) initiate recombination within hotspots where PRDM9 binds, and deposits H3K4me3 and H3K36me3. However, no protein(s) recognising this unique combination of histone marks have been identified. We identified Zcwpw1, containing H3K4me3 and H3K36me3 recognition domains, as having highly correlated expression with Prdm9. Here, we show that ZCWPW1 has co-evolved with PRDM9 and, in human cells, is strongly and specifically recruited to PRDM9 binding sites, with higher affinity than sites possessing H3K4me3 alone. Surprisingly, ZCWPW1 also recognises CpG dinucleotides. Male Zcwpw1 knockout mice show completely normal DSB positioning, but persistent DMC1 foci, severe DSB repair and synapsis defects, and downstream sterility. Our findings suggest ZCWPW1 recognition of PRDM9-bound sites at DSB hotspots is critical for synapsis, and hence fertility
Effects of drug cessation after flexible-dose fesoterodine in patients with overactive bladder
ObjectiveTo determine the course of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms after 4 weeks of no treatment following a 12-week study of the efficacy and safety of flexible-dose fesoterodine in patients with OAB who were enrolled in the UK healthcare system. There are limited data available on the natural time course of OAB symptoms after the cessation of treatment.Patients and methodsIn the open-label UK Study Assessing Flexible-dose Fesoterodine in Adults trial, patients aged >= 18 years with self-reported OAB symptoms for >= 3 months, a mean of at least eight micturitions per 24 h and three or more urgency episodes per 24 h on a 3-day bladder diary at baseline, and at least moderate bladder-related problems reported on the Patient Perception of Bladder Condition (PPBC) at baseline, were treated with fesoterodine for 12 weeks. All patients received fesoterodine 4 mg once daily for the first 4 weeks, at which time they could choose to increase the dose to 8 mg once daily, based on a discussion of treatment efficacy and tolerability with the investigator, or they could remain on fesoterodine 4 mg for the remaining 8 weeks. The 12-week treatment period was followed by a 4-week follow-up period of no fesoterodine treatment.Patients completed 3-day bladder diaries and the PPBC at baseline, week 4, end of treatment (week 12) and end of the follow-up period (week 16); the King's Health Questionnaire at baseline, end of treatment (week 12) and end of the follow-up period (week 16); and the Benefit, Satisfaction and Willingness to Continue questionnaire at week 12.ResultsAfter 12 weeks of fesoterodine treatment, patients had clinically meaningful improvements in bladder diary variables and King's Health Questionnaire domains; 79% (254/322) of patients reported an improvement on the PPBC.After 4 weeks of no treatment, most patients deteriorated back to week 4 levels or worse on all bladder diary and patient-reported outcomes.Patients who expressed a benefit from fesoterodine treatment, satisfaction with their treatment or a willingness to continue treatment showed greater improvement from baseline to week 12 and greater deterioration from week 12 to week 16 than patients who did not respond positively on the Benefit, Satisfaction and Willingness to Continue questionnaire. Both men and women showed a meaningful deterioration in bladder diary variables and patient-reported outcomes at week 16; baseline symptom severity, age and week 4 dose escalation status did not appear to affect outcome deterioration at week 16.ConclusionsAt 4 weeks after fesoterodine was discontinued, patients showed an increase in the frequency of OAB symptoms, an increase in the severity of bladder-related problems and a reduction in health-related quality of life. Many patients with OAB who respond to antimuscarinics may require treatment for more than 12 weeks because symptoms recur as early as 4 weeks after the cessation of therapy.</p
Abstract : The expansion of disasters related to flooding in urban regions is associated to land use and occupation processes and to water resource management methods. To investigate the vulnerability of the population of the Madalena neighborhood to flooding the socio-spatial formation of the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil was studied. The neighborhood is situated on top of landfills made in floodable areas since the colonization period. The methodology of the study is based on the work of Milton Santos (2012), who treats geographic space as an inseparable set of systems of objects and systems of actions. The proposal is fertilized by the encounter of concepts taken from socio-spatial dynamics, in an exercise of historical critical analysis that relates the local to the global. This method makes it possible to link the analysis of the variables adopted: to the social spacial dynamics of the city, to physiogeographic factors, to urban hydrology, the episodes of flooding and to measures for its control. The heart of the problematic is found in the installation of large dams in the Capibaribe River Basin from 1973-1978, in an effort to resolve historic flooding and water supply problems, without proper control of land use and occupation. The consequences are highlighted by the floods of 2011 and 2013, which once again affected neighborhoods considered to be better protected and safer since the conclusion of the Tapacurá System in 1978, including the neighborhood of Madalena, which had strong rises in real estate prices because of vertical construction. The investigation found that this form of occupation has intensified without considering the capacity of local infrastructure for urban draining and there is great damage when strong rains coincide with high tides. Among the indicators of the increased populational vulnerability to flooding we highlight growing trends towards: intensification of rainfall; expansion of the range of the tides; continuity of the process of densification of residents and investments in infrastructure that lead to more landfills and impermeabilization of land; demand for drinking water; and expansion of the affected areas. The reflections point to the need for greater mobilization and social participation in the establishment of priorities for facing the challenge of developing an urban plan that is truly efficient in the minimization of the social vulnerabilities
