The Proto-Munda Predicate and the Austroasiatic Language Family (Preprint)
Self-archiving copy of the Author Accepted Manuscript
Rau, Felix 2020. “The Proto-Munda Predicate and the Austroasiatic Language Family” In: Mathias Jenny, Paul Sidwell, and Mark Alves (eds.) Austroasiatic Syntax in Areal and Diachronic Perspective. p. 198–235 Leiden:Brill. https://doi.org/10.1163/9789004425606_009
The fact that most languages in the Munda branch of Austroasiatic have extensive verbal morphology has lead to the widespread assumption that proto-Munda itself had a morphologically complex verb. Pinnow (1966) as well as Norman Zide and Gregory Anderson (Zide & Anderson 2001, Anderson & Zide 2001, Anderson 2004, Anderson 2007) tried to reconcile the diversity of affixes and clitics and the abundance of morphological structures in modern Munda languages by reconstructing complex verbal morphology in the common ancestor. Reconstructions along these lines set proto-Munda apart from other Austroasiatic languages and from what we know of the history of the Austroasiatic family. Furthermore, a morphologically complex proto-Munda locates many crucial morphological developments in a pre-proto-Munda stage and has proto-Munda emerge as an exceptional Austroasiatic language apart from all other branches and with no explanation how and when it changed so dramatically
Munda Politics and Land: Understanding Indigeneity in Jharkhand, India
The eastern state of Jharkhand in India has been the site of contention between Adivasi communities, like the Munda, and the national government. This is a relationship between these communities and centralized, outside power that has existed for centuries in different forms. To understand this ongoing conflict, we need to understand the root causes of contention. Various scholars have traced this to a general rejection by Adivasis of State-sanctioned neoliberal development projects like land-grabbing and mining. I analyze, based on a fifteen month long ethnographic study conducted from May 2017 to December 2018, the meaning of land for the Munda community, and how these meanings underlie the Adivasi-State conflict, based on several forms of qualitative data. I argue that at the core of this ongoing conflict lie questions of identity construction and representation, neoliberal market forces, gender, and a historical narrative of resistance against outsiders. Importantly, to best understand Adivasi politics and their relationship to their local environment, one must actively listen to how these communities represent themselves.Doctor of PhilosophyThe eastern state of Jharkhand in India has been the site of an ongoing conflict between the Munda Adivasi (indigenous) community and the State. This contentious relationship has existed for several centuries and continues until now. Various scholars describe the conflict as the general rejection of the attempts of State and corporate actors to grab lands in order to carry out neoliberal development projects such as mining and hydroelectricity dams in the region. I analyze, based on a fifteen-month long ethnographic study conducted from May 2017 to December 2018, the meaning of land for the Munda community, and how these meanings underlie the Adivasi-State conflict. I argue that the current ongoing conflict underlie questions of identity construction and representation embedded in the historical narrative of resistance against outsiders. More specifically, one must understand the subaltern communities, such as the Munda Adivasi, through their discourses
Turism development posibilities in the Benedikt municipality
The Master\u27s thesis deals with the tourism potential of the Benedict Municipality. The author has highlighted the natural and cultural characteristics, which are present in the municipality. Benedikt is located in the heart of Slovenske gorice. Once the place was a fully agricultural area, but in the last two decades, the municipality began to develop in the tertiary and quaternary activities. Today, the municipality is dominated by part-time farming, as citizens in addition to working on the farm also go to work. In the last few years, the centre of the municipality has extremely developed. This happened because of the express road, which has taken away the traffic that used to go through Benedikt in the past. The construction of housing estate and systematic construction of modern residential area nearby have also contributed to young families moving to Benedikt. Tourism started to develop, the municipality took care of the information boards, and various paths are linking sights into a whole. In 2004, the works on the borehole of the thermal water, which is intended for the construction of thermal spa in Benedikt, were finished
Locating Adivasi Politics: Aspects of ‘Indian’ Anthropology after Birsa Munda
The article assesses the ways in which an historic Adivasi figure, Birsa Munda, entered into the national imaginary in India before Independence. The pivotal role of early anthropologists, notably Sarat Chandra Roy, and the formation of ‘Indian’ anthropology (as a field of intellectual and cultural politics) are emphasised. The analysis focuses on the ways in which the posthumous presence of Birsa Munda becomes significant in two phases, following his untimely death in Ranchi prison in 1900. First, the period immediately after the suppression of the Birsaite Ulgulan (insurgency) of 1898-1900 is addressed in terms of the convergence of administrative and anthropological priorities. The second phase (c. 1912 to mid-1930s) raises the question of how the nationalisation of anthropology and culture in India was premised in part on the ‘integration’ of Munda pasts. I argue that in the wake of the Government of India Act (1935) and in advance of the annual assembly of the Indian National Congress (1940) opportunities arose for Birsa Munda to become a vehicle of what Radhakamal Mukerjee had earlier termed ‘intermediation’, i.e. the synthesis of national and sub-national, or tribal, entities. The visual aspects of integration and the cultural politics of intermediation are debated with specific reference to time and evolution, and in advance of conclusions concerning real and metaphorical archives
The Relations Between Ptuj and Maribor in the Late Middle Ages
The MA thesis discusses the relationships between Maribor and Ptuj in the Late Middle Ages. The author puts to the forefront the dispute regarding the wine trade in the lower Styria region, between Ptuj, which at the time belonged to Salzburg, and Maribor, which was under the Habsburg imperial reign. The wine trade monopoly was primarily held by Ptujhowever, as the Habsburgs conquered Maribor, they strove to obtain the monopoly. They were very successful at impeding Ptuj, since they used those specific trade routes which were only allowed to be used. Other towns also joined the so called wine war between the two mentioned towns, because the wine trade of that time offered outstanding opportunities for life of luxury. In general, merchants were the richest class of population, richer even than the nobility of that time. That was also one of the reasons as to why the nobility and the monasteries began to integrate into the wine trade in the Late Middle Ages. That way, the monasteries, which were receiving various privileges from the state prince, were mostly causing damage to bourgeois merchants, and thus presented their strong competition. Such small conflicts were responsible for the outburst of disagreements which finally lead to the wine war. The epilogue was not reached until the middle of the 17th century, when in 1654 both towns reached a compromise, ratified by emperor, Ferdinand III. The wine trade flourished beyond belief after the agreement had been signed
Capturing Birsa Munda: the virtuality of a colonial-era photograph
By using the images of Birsa Munda’s photograph, copy print of a portrait and poster, this article analyses the historical and ideological conditions that brought about the twofold capture of Birsa Munda (the anti-missionary, anti-diku, anti-Raj and freedom fighter from Ranchi) by Anglican missionaries and Raj police in 1895 and discusses the dissemination of these photographic images from camera to archive to mass viewership. It cites the writings of contemporary academics and activists to relate the viewing and celebration of Birsa’s image to issues of post-nationalism. It also debates the form, meaning and history of this memorializing proces
THE CARTOONS AS THE VALUE SOURCE FOR CHILDREN AT SENIOR PRE-SCHOOL AGE
Kvalifikācijas darba tēma tiek veltīta vērtību meklējumiem multiplikācijas filmās, bērnu audzināšanas nolūkos vecākajā pirmsskolas vecumā. Darba apjoms pārsniedz noteikto kvalifikācijas darba izstrādes lapaspušu skaitu, taču autore to pamato ar vēlmi sniegt skrupulozāku ieskatu izvirzītās problēmas izpētē. The qualification paper investigates the role of cartoon value in education at senior pre-school age. Qualification paper by Anita Munda Supervisor: Professor, Dr. psych. Tija Zīriņa Title of qualification paper “The cartoons as the value source for children at senior pre-school age”. The amount of work exceeds the number of pages, but the author is justified by the desire to give an insight into the challenges by the most scrupulous research. The paper consists of 87 pages, which include the 9 pictures, 6 tables, 2 annexes, which can be viewed at preschool age groups of children and their parents in the issues that facilitate the development process. 59 units of literature and electronic resources were used in the paper development process. Structure of the paper includes introduction, the theoretical part, which includes the 4 chapters, the empirical part, conclusion, the list of sources and literature and appendices. In the theoretical part author has discussed the challenges and the opportunities by using cartoons and their content in educational process in pre-school. The empirical study of the author tried to prove the hypothesis. Teacher tried to explain the media audiovisual materials by raising value of children emotional experience. Twenty children (9 girls and 11 boys) in senior pre-school age participate in the empirical study. The cartoons used in research represent three different political eras - the Soviet period in 20th century, the period of Latvia’s second Independence and 21st century. Hypotesis stated in the introduction has been proved and confirmed. Keywords: cartoons, moral values, values, mass media, senior pre-school age
