Parent training for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: is it as effective when delivered as routine rather than as specialist care?

Background: The effectiveness of parent training (PT) when delivered as part of specialist tier-two services for preschool AD/HD children has been recently demonstrated.Aims: To assess the effectiveness of the same PT programme when delivered as part of routine primary care by non-specialist nurses.Method: A sample of 89 3-year-old children with preschool AD/HD took part in a controlled trial of an eight-week (one hour a week), health visitor delivered, PT package. Children, allocated randomly to PT (n = 59) and waiting list control (WLC; n = 30) groups, were compared. Results: PT did not reduce AD/HD symptoms. Maternal well-being decreased in both PT and WLC groups. Conclusions: While PT is an effective intervention for preschool AD/HD when delivered in specialized settings, these benefits do not appear to generalize when programme are delivered as part of routine primary care by non-specialist nurses

Interview with Cathy Ulrich

This spring, the students in UND’s ENGL 414 workshop (The Art of Writing Fiction) read a collection of micro and flash fictions titled Ghosts of You, by Cathy Ulrich. With its use of second person and a penchant for turning tropes of crime fiction on their heads, this book is a must read. Three ENGL 414 students had the opportunity to interview the author via email to discuss Cathy Ulrich’s intentions in Ghosts of You, as well as her own personal writing techniques. To borrow from how each story in Ghosts of You begins, “The thing about being the [interviewer] is you set the plot in motion.” Floodwal

Step by step help for children with ADHD a self-help manual for parents

No full text
Raising a child with ADHD can be distressing and exhausting for the whole family. But given the appropriate knowledge, and the right tools, parents can intervene to manage their child's behaviour, leading to improved relationships at home and, it is hoped, a more successful time at school. This simple, flexible six-step programme is full of tried-and-tested ideas for parents and professionals supporting families of young children with ADHD. By practicing the techniques and strategies, parents will gain confidence in their parenting and, over time, will improve the child’s management of the condition. The programme includes games that will help improve the child’s attention, exercises to develop patience and tips for supporting the child in successful self-organization. There are also plenty of useful ideas for developing communication between parents and schools.Based on research and extensive clinical experience, Step by Step Help for Children with ADHD will help families to adapt their parenting to the child, improving relationships and behaviours in the home and at play group.<br/

Parent-based therapies for preschool attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a randomized, controlled trial with a community sample

Objective: To evaluate two different parent-based therapies for preschool attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a community sample.Method: Three-year-old children displaying a preschool equivalent of ADHD (n = 78) were randomly assigned to either a parent training (PT;n = 30), a parent counseling and support (PC&S;n = 28), or a waiting-list control group (n = 20). The PT group received coaching in child management techniques. The PC&S group received nondirective support and counseling. Measures of child symptoms and mothers' well-being were taken before and after intervention and at 15 weeks follow-up.Results: ADHD symptoms were reduced (F2,74 = 11.64;p < .0001) and mothers' sense of well-being was increased by PT relative to both other groups (F2,74 = 10.32;p < .005). Fifty-three percent of children in the PT group displayed clinically significant improvement ([chi]2 = 4.08;p = .048).Conclusions: PT is a valuable treatment for preschool ADHD. PC&S had little effect on children's behavior. Constructive training in parenting strategies is an important element in the success of parent-based interventions. Psychostimulants are not a necessary component of effective treatment for many children with preschool ADHD
