    Cranial osteology of meiglyptini (aves: piciformes: picidae)

    The Meiglyptini comprise eight species grouped into three genera: Meiglyptes and Mulleripicus, with three species each, and Hemicircus, with two species. The aim of the present study was to describe the cranial osteology of six species and three genera of Meiglyptini and to compare them to each other, as well as with other species of woodpeckers and other bird groups. The cranial osteology varied among the investigated species, but the most markedly distinct characteristics were: (1) a frontal overhang is only observed in the middle portion of the frontale of H. concretus; (2) the Proc. zygomaticus and suprameaticus are thick and long in species of the genus Mulleripicus, but short in other species; (3) the Pes pterygoidei is relatively larger in species of the genus Mulleripicus, while it is narrow, thin and relatively smaller in species of the genus Meiglyptes and indistinct in H. concretus; (4) the bony projection of the ectethmoidale is relatively short and thin in species of Mulleripicus and more developed in H. concretus.     Seasonal dynamics of bird assembly in Cerrado's urban area

    O Cerrado é o segundo maior Domínio Fitogeográfico sul americano, apresentando uma rica avifauna de mais de 800 espécies. No entanto, ao longo das últimas décadas, esse vem sofrendo continuamente com o desmatamento, com sua vegetação sendo substituída para utilização antrópica. As aves são organismos bioindicadores, tendo em vista que essas possuem uma rápida resposta à fragmentação; diversas espécies têm especificidades alimentar, além de serem de fácil detecção de modo que o conhecimento das exigências ecológicas desse grupo, nos permite aferir o quão conservado está uma determinada área de estudo. Desse modo, o presente estudo teve como objetivo (1) comparar a assembleia de aves em duas áreas de cerradão do município de Bauru no Refúgio de Vida Silvestre Aimorés, uma urbana e outra rural entre janeiro de 2023 a outubro de 2023 e (2) comparar os resultados com áreas pristinas de cerradão no estado de São Paulo. As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente por meio da metodologia de pontos fixos, sendo um dia na área rural (Gleba 2) e outro na área urbana (Gleba 1), nos períodos da manhã e tarde, totalizando 40 horas de esforço amostral. Foi também realizado o levantamento qualitativo, no trajeto entre os pontos como método complementar de amostragem. Foram registradas um total de 116 espécies distribuídas em 39 famílias na área em questão. Nas Glebas 1 e Gleba 2 foram registradas respectivamente 88 espécies (com 2978 contatos) e 107 (com 3016 contatos). Destas, nove são exclusivas da Gleba 1 e 28 foram encontradas somente na Gleba 2. Em ambas Glebas houve uma predominância de aves insetívoras, seguida por onívoros, com 14,8%; granívoros, correspondendo a 12,5%; frugívoros abrangendo 11,4%; nectarívoros com 5,7% e carnívoros, 4,5%. Na estratificação vertical houve o predomínio do estrato arbóreo. Cabe ressaltar que a grande maioria das espécies registradas ocupam e/ou foram registradas em mais de um estrato vertical. Das espécies migratórias que ocorrem na região foram registradas Ictinia plumbea, Vireo chivi, Tyrannus savana, T. melancholicus, Myiodynastes maculatus e Empidonomus varius. Grande parte das aves registradas são espécies pouco sensíveis às alterações antrópicas, com algumas espécies mais sensíveis sendo encontradas somente na área menos antropizada.The Cerrado, the second-largest phytogeographic domain in South America, boasts a diverse avifauna with over 800 species. Unfortunately, over recent decades, it has faced continuous deforestation, where human activities replace its natural vegetation. Birds, serving as bioindicators, quickly respond to habitat fragmentation, and understanding their ecological requirements helps assess the conservation status of a study area. This study aims to (1) compare bird assemblages in two cerradão areas in Bauru within the Aimorés Wildlife Refuge—one urban and one rural—from January to October 2023 and (2) compare these results with pristine cerradão areas in São Paulo. Monthly samplings used fixed-point methodology, with one day allocated to the rural area (Tract 2) and another to the urban area (Tract 1), totaling 40 hours of effort. A complementary qualitative survey along the route between points was also conducted. In the study area, 116 bird species across 39 families were documented. Tracts 1 and 2 recorded 88 species (2978 contacts) and 107 species (3016 contacts), respectively. Nine species were exclusive to Tract 1, and 28 were found only in Tract 2. Both areas showed a prevalence of insectivorous birds, followed by omnivores (14.8%), granivores (12.5%), frugivores (11.4%), nectarivores (5.7%), and carnivores (4.5%). Vertical stratification indicated a predominance of the arboreal stratum, with most species observed in more than one vertical stratum. Among migratory species in the region, Ictinia plumbea, Vireo chivi, Tyrannus savana, T. melancholicus, Myiodynastes maculatus, and Empidonomus varius were documented.     Jaw Musculature of the Picini (Aves: Piciformes: Picidae)

    The Picini tribe comprises 25 Old World woodpecker species grouped into seven genera that are widely distributed in Asia and include several representatives from the Eurasian region. Given the absence of detailed anatomical studies of Picini in the literature, the purposes of this study were to describe the jaw musculature of 14 species of Picini in detail and to compare the musculature patterns of these species. The results of this analysis indicate the following: (1) there is a clear association between the ventralis lateralis and dorsalis lateralis muscles through fleshy fibers that are connected in all species, (2) the jaw musculature of the genus Picus differs from that of other Picini genera in terms of the poor development of the protractor muscle system of the quadrate (M. protractor quadrati and M. protractor pterygoidei), (3) generally, the M. pseudotemporalis superficialis originates in the ventrocaudal region of the laterosphenoid (the lower part of the orbit), with the only noteworthy exception being an origin in the upper part of the orbit in Dinopium javanense, and (4) the protractor pterygoidei muscle is more developed in Blythipicus rubiginosus, Dinopium rafflesii, and D. javanense than in the other species

    Cranial osteology in mornoticlae (Aves : Coradiformes)

    Momotidae (motmots) is found throughout Latin America between Mexico and northern Argentina. Given the absence of detailed studies of cranial osteology of Momotidae in the literature, this article presents a comprehensive description of the variation of the cranial osteology in all nine species of Momotidae and compares the results with published studies of other families of Coraciiformes and families in other orders. In addition, the cranial structures described are related to ecological and behavioral aspects of Momotidae. The cranial osteology of Baryphthengus ruficapillus is described in detail and compared with other species of Momotidae. The results indicate the presence in Momotidae of modified cranial structures, among which the most conspicuous are the frontal, lacrimal, squamosal, orbital, and laterosphenoid regions, as well as the palatine, upper jaw, pterygoid, and mandible.     The Picini is composed of 26 species of woodpeckers from the old world that are grouped into seven genera. Given the absence of detailed studies on the cranial osteology of the Picini, the purpose of this study is to describe the cranial osteology of 14 species of Picini from six genera and to compare these species with each other, with other species of woodpeckers and with other bird groups. The results of the analysis of the bone structures of the skull of the Picini indicate that there are seven outstanding characteristic of bones involved in the functional mechanistics of the jaw apparatus. In the ossa cranii, these include the frontal overhang, the postorbital process, the extension of the parietal versus the frontal region and the temporal fossa. In the ossa faciei, these include the rostral expansion of the pterygoid, the ventral palatine fossa and the orbital process of the quadrate bone. For all of the structures associated with the cranial osteology of the investigated species, there is a clear distinction between the species of the genus Picus and the other species studied. Blythipicus rubiginosus, Chrysocolaptes lucidus, Reinwardtipicus validus, Gecinulus viridis and the species of the genus Dinopium exhibit additional particularities. © 2012 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
