Architectural design of metal sheets by localized laser treatment
In this study, laser process is applicated to fabricate architectured materials based on steel sheets with localized reinforcements of different geometrical patterns. At the first stage, thin AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel sheets containing 18% Cr were hardened by continuous-wave laser beams under different conditions. A symmetric double laser treatment platform was developed to operate two lasers simultaneously in order to achieve a homogenous microstructure through the specimen and avoid the overheating associated with single laser treatments on one surface. The influence of linear energy density and shielding gas on microstructure and hardness is investigated for both single and double laser treatments. Tensile behavior and oxidation effect during treatment are also studied. With a peak temperature around Tm, the single-track laser yields local microhardness that is 90% higher than the base material, while samples completely treated by the multi-track laser present a 60% increase in yield stress and 45.8% in ultimate tensile stress. These improvements in mechanical behaviors are driven by the formation of martensite and chromium carbides upon rapid cooling despite poor carbon content and dramatic grain coarsening. The laser parameter which leads to the most strengthening effect was chosen to fabricate straight and corrugation reinforced architectured materials and their mechanical behaviors were followed by tensile test with Digital Image Correlation system and compared with Finite Element Method simulation results. No enhancing effect of corrugations on necking strain was found due to the uncompleted unbending and insufficient contrast in strength between matrix and reinforcement. At the second stage, direct laser beam carburization is implemented for the first time on thin AISI 430 sheets with graphite coating under different conditions. Microstructural morphology, phase constitution, carbon content, microhardness, and tensile behavior are investigated to evaluate the laser carburization effect. The least carbon content is around 0.4 wt% in the carburized zone where austenite becomes the leading phase. Delta ferrite is found in a cellular carburized area, which resembles a duplex microstructure. The hardness of carburized zone has been at least increased by 130%, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of a fully carburized sample can be increased by respectively 90% and 85%. This hardening effect is driven by the precipitation of carbides formed during solidification offering pinning points for dislocations and grain boundaries. The laser parameter resulting the most strengthening effect was taken to introduce straight and corrugated reinforcements into the matrix and their mechanical response was followed. Very limited enhancing effect on necking strain induced by corrugated reinforcement was observed. In the last part, laser hardening is applied to ductile ferritic steel in order to introduce straight and corrugated martensitic reinforcements, effectively generating architecture steel sheets. Tensile behavior of laser-architectured samples is studied both using FEM simulation and mechanical testing to reveal the effect of laser-induced corrugations on strength and necking strain. Results show that with the same reinforced volume fraction of 24%, an increase in corrugation height/period leads to a gain in necking strain with a loss in yield strength and ultimate tensile stress. This beneficial effect on necking strain is due to the corrugation unbending process which introduces a so-called geometric work hardening during tension. Extended simulations are carried out on various corrugation height/period and the evolution trends of ultimate tensile strength and necking change with different reinforced volumes. This study proposes a perspective on corrugation reinforced architectured materials. Corrugation parameters can be chosen to tailor the mechanical behavior of laser-architectured materials
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
mechanical properties of auxetic hybrid lattices
The current industrial challenges are strongly linked to the minimization of energy costs and require the optimization of the systems used for this purpose. This is the case in the field of transports, where the reduction of on-board mass is a necessity to achieve the objectives of reducing energy expenses. Mechanical energy dissipation devices are no exception. In this context, lattice structures show high dissipation capacities with regard to their mass, and are therefore candidates for replacing mechanical parts in use. Among lattice structures, negative Poisson's ratio structures can exhibit higher dissipation than conventional structures. Nevertheless, these structures are subject to deformation modes that can affect their performance. This thesis work aimed at exploring the new possibilities brought by additive manufacturing technologies, in order to improve the specific mechanical properties of periodic lattices, especially for energy dissipation, by a hybridization strategy consisting in filling the vacant volume of the lattices with a material of different nature. First, two new auxetic lattices are introduced, their elastic and elasto-plastic properties are studied numerically via a homogenization strategy using periodic boundary conditions. Subsequently, an experimental and numerical campaign comparing mechanical properties of two polymer lattices with their elastomer-filled composite counterparts is detailed. The analysis of the compression tests shows an increase in the elastic properties of the composites, as well as an increase in the stress levels and densification strain. The delayed densification observed on the composite lattices allows a longer stress plateau, more desirable for energy dissipation applications, leading to an increase in specific energy absorption and absorption efficiency. Finally, metal lattices are manufactured by SLM before being filled with polyurethane. The resulting hybrid structures are studied both experimentally and numerically via compression tests, but also under X-ray tomography to observe the internal deformations of the lattices. Results suggest that a strong contrast in properties between the constituent materials can mitigate the increase in mechanical properties. This work confirms that hybridization can be an effective option to increase the specific mechanical properties of the lattices, including the specific energy dissipated
Material Instabilities in Architectural Media : Piobert-Lüders Plasticity and Superelasticity
Under tension low carbon steels exhibit inhomogeneous plastic deformation. This instabil-ity called Piobert-Lüders banding creates fronts of localized strain that propagate in the structure. Superelastic materials, such as NiTi, also behave macroscopically in this way in the elastic domain. To date, only simple geometries, sheets and tubes, have been studied. This thesis focuses on architectured materials and specifically lattice structures which can be defined as a tessellation of unit-cells periodically distributed in space. This class of ad-vanced materials draws new mechanical properties from its architecture. We investigate the effect of the architecture on the global behavior of the entire structure. Especially, how bands interact with a lattice and how to control initiation and propagation of localized strain with the architecture. An elastoplastic material model is used in this work to simulate the Piobert-Lüders band formation and propagation. The model also considers a large deformation framework for elasto-plasticity with periodic boundary conditions in order to represent the architectured material. Initiation and propagation of material instabilities depend on the geometry and the relative orientation of the solicitation. Propagating and non-propagating behaviors are identified for the localization bands and related to the type of geometries. Material instabilities affect the mechanical behavior of the structure as far as they are governed by the architecture. Those conclusions have been compared to experimental testing on laser cut architectured specimen of ARMCO steel and superelastic NiTi.The choice of a specific architecture can be made with the objective of concentrating initiation of plasticity in specific region and even of avoiding plasticity from other region, hence paving the way to materials instability-based materials
Computational design of architectured materials subject to instabilities
Architectured materials have gained interest due to advancements in manufacturing techniques. Their defining feature is the presence of an intermediate scale. This intermediate separation presents new opportunities, as manipulating the material's geometry, topology, and morphology at this scale determines its functional properties which can be beyond those of classical bulk materials. However, architectured materials also tend to be subject to instabilities. While these instabilities are generally detrimental to material performance, they can be of interest. For example, it has been observed that such instabilities can alter the material's wave propagation properties, Poisson ratio, effective negative swelling ratio, and chirality. The objective of this PhD is to develop an engineering-focused solution for efficiently designing pattern generating architectured materials. It is part of the Max-Oasis ANR project, which aims to establish a standardised approach for designing architectured materials prone to instabilities using group theoretic tools.A literature review on the subject is first presented insisting on the regular hexagonal honeycomb lattice under in-plane compression. It is found that the change in pattern arises from a loss of symmetry and occurs at a bifurcation point on the equilibrium path. We introduce a number of methods used to determine the bifurcation point and associated post-bifurcated patterns. We then introduce the mathematical tools which will be used in our design methodology: bifurcation theory, group theory and equivariant bifurcation theory applied to structural mechanics.Next, we present the core of our work: the method for finding the post-bifurcated patterns in architectured materials. It is fully automatised in Python and the group theoretic calculations carried out by GAP software. The method uses the symmetry group of the material to predict its associated post-bifurcated patterns. The bifurcation mechanisms are assessed by studying the symmetry of its unit cell. After calculating the irreducible representations of this symmetry group, the isotropy subgroups are determined, which serve as potential symmetry groups for bifurcated solutions. To determine the existence of a solution, the Equivariant Branching Lemma is used and the dimensions of the fixed-point subspaces of each candidate are computed. The representative unit cell is then meshed with beam elements, and the displacements of its nodes are constrained using the symmetries of the isotropy subgroups. The bifurcated patterns are obtained by computing the constrained displacements that minimise the strain energy of the unit cell. After computing this, the first bifurcation point on the equilibrium path is calculated. The results were compared with existing literature on hexagonal honeycombs and the regular triangular lattice, showing good agreements. New patterns that have not been observed before were also computed. The method separates design parameters and provides versatility, allowing for rapid pattern screening. It can be used as inputs for generalised continuum models to assess material behaviour.Limitations of the method include determining an appropriate unit cell size and stability of post-bifurcated patterns. The method focuses on mesoscopic instabilities and does not predict macroscopic instabilities or incorporate plasticity. Future work could involve adapting the method to consider these factors.Overall, the method offers a robust and automated approach for designing architectured materials. It has the advantage of exploring post-bifurcated possibilities for any architecture and provides exhaustive results without additional parameters. Further research opportunities include applying the method to new architectures and obtaining their catalogue of post-bifurcated patterns, exploring more complex links between nodes, and determining the appropriate load for obtaining a given pattern
Propriétés effectives de matériaux architecturés
Architectured materials bring new possibilities in terms of structural and functional properties, filling gaps and pushing the boundaries of Ashby's materials maps. The term "architectured materials" encompasses any microstructure designed in a thoughtful fashion, so that some of its materials properties have been improved. There are many examples: particulate and fibrous composites, foams, sandwich structures, woven materials, lattice structures, etc. One engineering challenge is to predict the effective properties of such materials. In this work, two types of microstructures are considered: periodic auxetic lattices and stochastic fibrous networks. Auxetics are materials with negative Poisson's ratio that have been engineered since the mid-1980s. Such materials have been expected to present enhanced mechanical properties such as shear modulus or indentation resistance. The stochastic fibrous networks considered in this work is made of 3D infinite interpenetrating fibres that are randomly distributed and oriented. This case of random structure is challenging regarding the determination of a volume element size that is statistically representative. For both materials, computational homogenization using finite element analysis is implemented in order to estimate the effective thermal and mechanical properties.
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
