Six Women - Art vapours
Six Women - Art Vapours is a visual/text essay referencing the five women filmed in conversation in the second episode of John Berger's Ways of Seeing (1972), and a sixth woman who appears in the Ways of Seeing archive belonging to its producer, MiKe Dibb, as the author of a letter from an apologetic ‘ordinary housewife’.
The visual/text essay is co-authored with Juliette Kristensen, developed from a paper co-presented at 'Thinking with John Berger', 4-5 September 2014, Cardiff Metropolitan University. The paper discussed a special issue of the Journal of Visual Culture published in 2012 (marking the 40th anniversary of Ways of Seeing), and introduced a related project, Art Vapours.
The journal issue was co-edited by Raiford Guins, Juliette Kristensen and susan pui san lok, and comprises eighteen short contributions and reflections from historians, theorists, writers, thinkers, curators and makers, from across the fields of art history, visual culture and practice. The issue also includes an interview by Kristensen with Mike Dibb (producer, filmmaker and collaborator on Ways of Seeing), and a selection of visual essays commissioned by lok. In addition, lok produced a visual response to Dibb’s personal archive, called ‘Making Ways’, under the rubric, ‘Archivery’.
Art Vapours is an occasional collaboration between lok and Kristensen
Alternate Dispute Resolution in India: Lok Adalat as an alternative to court litigation
The author observed seven Lok Adalats: four in the Bangalore, one each in Kolar, Mangalore and Mysore and extracted other data from the two years of Lok Adalats held throughout the State of Kamataka and sample of cases settled in Bangalore. This report, based on field work in July-November 1988, describes the procedures used by Lok Adalat and the characteristics of cases disposed. It concludes by considering limitations of the Lok Adalat program, taking note of other ADR programs also under way in South India. The author concludes that the Lok Adalat, while not the solution for all cases, is an important, exciting legal innovation which warrants further inquiry to determine its efficacy and limitations. Koncepcijska ishodišta i kadrovska povezanost zagrebačkog Poleta i koprivničkog LOK-a
The paper analyzes the beginning, development stages and termination of Koprivnica's youth magazine LOK in the period between 1979 to 1989. Written on the basis of archival materials, newspaper articles and interviews with the participants of these events, the author explains how the key motivator for starting LOK was the decision of the SSOH's magazine Polet to back down from the republican concept. The role of LOK was not just to inform the public about events and initiatives related to the young generation. The magazine was also a tool for political activism, making ideological principles and programmes of the youth organization more appealing to potential members. The author explains that the magazine, as well as Polet from Zagreb, promptly broke out of the given framework and became a serious critic of social processes and an advocate for faster democratization of the political system. Major role in that had its "street language". The paper explains in detail why LOK, although not even nominated, won the prestigeous award "Sedam sekretara SKOJ-a" in 1980, and why the issue of regular funding was never resolved. The focus is directed also to the accompanying activities of the magazine, such as the launch of the youth radio show "Vruća juha" and youth gatherings "Izlok". The conceptual similarities and differences in the magazine conducting through the mandates of all five main editors are presented, as well as how it came to personnel intertwining of LOK and Polet.Rad analizira nastanak, razvojne faze i gašenje koprivničkog omladinskog lista LOK u razdoblju 1979. – 1989.

An Interview with Dave Eggers and Mimi Lok
On 18 March 2015 we had the rare opportunity to publicly interview the celebrated American author Dave Eggers and Mimi Lok, co-founder with Eggers of the socially engaged oral history non-profit Voice of Witness, in front of a student audience at the Vooruit cultural center in Ghent, Belgium. The occasion for their visit was Eggers’s being awarded the 2015 Amnesty International Chair at Ghent University in recognition of his human rights work. The interview aimed to give the audience an overall sense of the various creative and charitable projects in which Eggers and Lok are involved and which have earned them widespread acclaim. This published version of it is an edited and condensed transcript. The interview consists of two parts. The first part deals with Eggers’s literary work, homing in on The Circle in particular. The second part focuses on Voice of Witness and on how this project relates to Eggers’s work as a writer

The dramaturgy of ritual performances in Indian parliamentary debates
The content, style and form of MPs' performances on the floor of both Houses of the
Indian Parliament has undergone dramatic change within the last decade. For example,
97% of the productive hours of the Winter (Nov-Dec) 2010 Session were lost due to
intense disruption by MPs across the political spectrum seeking to stall the House.
Moreover, an increasing number of Bills are debated for less than an hour, if at all, on
the floor of Parliament - raising the conceptual question of whether legislation can still
be considered one of parliament's key functions in India. These changes require, at the
very least, an attempt to re-conceptualize the meaning and significance attributed to
various tropes of parliamentary performances, including those which seemingly subvert
all notions of parliamentary procedure, decorum and etiquette. In my thesis, I adopt a
novel interdisciplinary analytical framework, drawing upon performance studies, microsociological
dramaturgy of face-to-face interaction, interpretations of procedural
invocations, rhetorical political analysis and the study of political rituals. My primary
research question was whether the concept of ritual could usefully be mapped onto
performances of debates in the Indian parliamentary context. I then asked what the
significance of the absence or presence of rituals in this context would mean. Two case
were studies selected for this analysis, namely the Prevention of Terrorism Act (2001-
2004) and the Women's Reservation Bill (1996-2011), informed by a more general
ethnography of the Indian Parliament undertaken for this research. Both studies were
chosen using the logic of 'extreme case study selection' as these performances exhibit
extreme forms of dramaturgical violence, protest and polarized rhetoric that is
increasingly reflective of the everyday performances of the Indian Parliament. In my
research, I have adopted an interpretivist-constructivist approach to the ethnographic
method and have conducted two tranches of field research in New Delhi for that
purpose. My analysis demonstrates the presence of a diverse range of rituals of debate
being performed simultaneously during the legislative process within the Indian
Parliament, namely, procedural rituals, interpersonal rituals and disruptive rituals. These
findings corroborate the broader argument that the study of rituals are integral to an
understanding of parliamentary processes. Moreover, instead of dismissing certain
aspects of performance (e.g. physical obstruction of debate) as being symptomatic of
what many scholars have called the 'decline of parliament', my findings support the
cause for re-signifying, or re-reading parliamentary disruption as supporting, rather than
diminishing, the processes of political representation and widening the spectrum of
forms of political action considered as legitimate modes of political deliberation. The
evolution of these newer, sometimes disruptive, forms of representative ritual can be
read into wider processes of vernacularization and mediatization currently transforming
the ethos, identity and modus operandi of the Indian Parliament
