    Canosa di Puglia sotterranea: uso delle calcareniti dalle cave al manufatto

    In Apulia and in the easternmost part of the Basilicata region (Southern Italy), widespread deposits of calcarenite rock belonging to the Calcarenite of Gravina Fm. (Pliocene – Lower Pleistocene) crop out. These are porous and soft rocks, characterized by different grain size (from fine to coarse). Due to their workable properties and remarkable availability, this stone, locally known as tufo calcareo, was used in many historic buildings, churches and monuments of Canosa di Puglia. The town presents ruins of ancient exploitation activities and several open and underground quarries, even though the peculiarities of Canosa di Puglia are the “architetture derivate” (Marino, 2006), namely anthropogenic cavities, realized starting from the 10th century B.C. in the upper portion of the calcarenite unit. These ancient structures were used as human settlements, burial sites and storages. At date, this peculiarity of Canosa di Puglia is object of scientific studies and promotional activities, which represent a starting point for safeguarding and valuing this significant Cultural Heritage of Apulia. In this overview, in order to illustrate further evaluations, an overall description of the material, in terms of physical and mechanical properties, decay features and instability phenomena of anthropogenic cavities were reported

    Earthquake induced landslides (EIL) represent coseismic effects that heavily affect seismic territories worldwide and must be taken into account in urban planning according to national laws and technical provisions. Inventories of earthquake-triggered landslides and and geotechnical characterization of soils involved into mass movements are commonly prescribed to predict EIL with increasing details as the scale of the study increases. EIL hazard is assessed through several different methods. At urban scale, the deterministic approach of the Newmark’s sliding rigid block method is commonly employed to draw EIL hazard maps by calculating permanent displacements triggered by seismic events. Thematic maps built within ArcGis environment have been combined to draw hazard maps through the raster calculator tool (ARCMAPTM 2010). In this paper the Newmark’s method is applied to the case study of Deliceto town, located in Daunia Apennine (Apulia, Southern Italy). This territory is characterized by frequent and widespread landslide phenomena triggered by seasonal rainfalls and strong earthquakes, such as the 23rd November 1980 Irpinia earthquake. In particular, Deliceto is affected by the highest seismic level within Daunia territory corresponding to the expected peak ground acceleration (PGA) equal to 0.20 g. The outcomes of the present study suggest that the highest permanent displacements are expected along steep slopes made up of an alternation of limestones and marly clays belonging to the Flysch Faeto Fm

    Polignano a Mare is placed on the Adriatic coast of Apulia (Southern Italy). The historic centre lies on a steep cliff which is composed by Cretaceous and Quaternary carbonate rocks. Along the rocky coast, several caves and cavities used in the Prehistoric age as human settlement are observable and most of all accessible. These natural structures are due to the combined action of wave motion and karst phenomena, which characterised the Murgia area. The costal cliffs of Polignano a Mare are affected, especially in their higher part, by rock slope instability, which is strictly linked to the geostructural and mechanical properties of the rock masses, and anthropogenic factors. Wave action and seismicity have to be considered also. Therefore, a serious risk is clearly noticeable for the historical buildings lying on the precarious cliff edges. This paper aims to illustrate the main features of this site, in terms of coastal morphology and geology, rocky cliff instability and cliff recession, providing a detailed description of the particular landscape and its fragility

    Nella Puglia e nella Basilicata materana, affiorano estesi depositi calcarenitici a grana variabile da fine a grossa, appartenenti alla formazione della Calcarenite di Gravina (Pliocene sup.-Pleistocene inf.). Si tratta di rocce tenere e porose, solo a luoghi ben cementate, il cui facile reperimento e l’elevata lavorabilità hanno consentito una storica attività estrattiva. In particolare, a Canosa di Puglia sono note testimonianze dell’utilizzo di questo materiale legato in origine all’esigenza di ricavare ripari sotto roccia, lungo i versanti delle “lame”, e, successivamente, strutture abitative e di culto, anche di pregio e di notevole interesse storicoartistico. Un esempio è costituito dalle cosiddette “architetture derivate” che consistono in cavità adibite a svariate destinazioni (insediamenti rupestri, necropoli, cantine), oltre alle emergenze urbane quali castelli, chiese monumentali, cinte murarie e masserie

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    This paper presents a study on the landslide susceptibility assessment for the La Catola torrent catchment area, in the north western part of the Apulia Region (Southern Italy), using a computerized methodology in GIS environment. The proposed methodology is based upon geologic and geomorphologic surveys, geotechnical characterization of involved materials and time series analysis of hourly and yearly rainfalls for the period 1965–2001. Appropriate thematic data were analytically combined and superimposed on a base map using the spatial analyst tools available with ArcMap 10-ESRI, for providing the landslide susceptibility map of the study area
