In the affirmation of the Sustainable Development Strategy, the agricultural production has a crucial role in the success of the bio-economy (Conway and Barbier, 2013). The European Commission adopted a strategic action plan called: “Innovate for sustainable growth: a Bio-economy for Europe” (OECD, 2011). The bio-economy will be one of the basic topics of the Horizon 2020 program. In this sense, very promising results are coming especially for the cycle of barley. Barley is a cultivation with large diffusion all around the world and with high capability of adaptation regarding to climate and soil variation (Asveld et al., 2011). Last year a University Network of Central Italy built a Research Project of National Interest entitled “Process and product innovation in the barley food chain for the improvement of quality and environmental sustainability of food and beverages”. The mean objective of the Project is to arrange a bioeconomic evaluation of the barley chain with a particular focus on proposals for the supply chain and to boost the role of barley for the initiation of bio-economic development processes at national and European level. In this sense, the paper represents a first contribution about a specific part of the research project and, moreover, aims to deliver an example at the academic level about the innovative opportunities of bioeconomic research field

The Success Factors of Food Events: The Case Study of Umbrian Extra Virgin Olive Oil

    No full text
Gastronomic events are an important part of the “Made in Italy” and a vital tool for rural development. The aim of the study is to identify the complexity of the factors that determine the success of a food event. The authors, after state-of-the-art analysis of the event marketing, formulate the hypothesis of a causal model and form a data collection during the “open oil mills” in the Umbria region. Through in-depth interviews the participants were asked to express themselves about the importance and interest attributed to some aspects directly related to the theme of the event, and finally to indicate the degree of satisfaction and the likelihood of some of their future behavior. Statistical analysis based on structural equation models allowed the authors to highlight which aspects are significant in order to confirm the assumptions made. Results provide guidance for management decisions and organization of food and wine

    No full text
In this new era of the Green Economy, the development of rural areas is closely linked to the paradigm of the Sustainable Development Strategy and the option of multifunctionality of rural enterprises. Multifunctionality is the key word of the new millennium. In this sense, tourist activities in rural areas (as Agriturism or Rural Tourism) plays a leading role in the process of development especially for the innovations reflected in the significant positive cash. In the century of communication even in rural areas a basic dissemination and widespread use of ICT become more and more important; in particular therefore the dissemination and use of the Broad Band especially in rural areas is crucial. The big push that are giving to the Smart Cities programs for urban areas must strengthen that of the Smart Communities for rural areas. Through a strong network and a technology program structured in rural areas, is possible to imagine building of interactive services for local marketing especially for advertising in order to promote a loyalty tourists (on the basis of an approach customer). The authors believe that a popular and innovative service of tourism in rural areas can’t be regardless of the expansion of ICT and Broad Band. In this paper, after a deep introduction about the objective of rural development and sustainability towards Horizon 2020, the author make several consideration regarding the importance of ICT and technology for the rural areas

Purpose Our study could be of your interest because presents an attempt to evaluate Italian Olive oil brand competition thought the analysis of consumers’ visual perspective, matching the fields of interest of Qualitative Market Research. Design/methodology/approach Through the implementation of a new IT system called “Visual Marketing REL”, which furnish eye tracking measures, we were able to produce important information relative to the layout organization of to the Italian olive oil shelf, a strategic product of the agro-food chain. The research uses the "in situ" testing of the software developed. Findings The research, following up the thesis of sensorial marketing affecting choices, intends to identify a IT tool to facilitate the design of the shelf by increasing the efficiency of the retail mix. Results, highlight that specific positioning could impact the differentiation effect and orientate consumers choices, thus, increasing the efficiency of the retail mix. Research limitations/implications To generalize the results would require many repetitions of different product categories. In this case it would be possible to quantify the levels of correlation between visual information and sales Practical implications This work opens important considerations in term of strategic management of modern distribution, leaders and minor brands competitive relationship, as well as opportunities for producers of high quality products, which could address their strategies to differentiation and niche market in cooperation with retailers. Originality/value The most important result is the connection among choices, visualization, differentiation strategy and positioning/ordering on the shelf. The layout management, in fact, could be used as a joint strategy of retailers but also producer to emphasize quality and price differentiation as well increasing sales. Moreover, the study provides for the first time the outcomes of a brand new software “Visual Marketing REL”, highlighting its limits and its positive element

Label information and consumer behaviour: Evidence on drinking milk sector

    No full text
The purpose of the research is to evaluate the impact of different kinds of information disclosures of milk labels, investigating the interest among consumers based on their consumption behaviours and characteristics. In this research, all the actions which lead to a healthiness, become expressions of a production process, among which consumers' food choices, purchase, preparation, and also self-production. Therefore, in the "health creation" production process, information and knowledge about food become "investments". In this context, label disclosures become a tangible expression of this kind of "investment". The research question is: what impact do purchase preferences and consumers' characteristics have on their interest towards the label information provided? Several information disclosures, both mandatory and voluntary, are investigated. Therefore, some choice attributes will be analysed as indicators of the consumer's behaviour in relation to his investment in food information. The methodology used for the analysis is an Ordered Logit. The analysis of the consumer's behaviour has been performed by transposing Ménard's analysis of firm corporate governance (Ménard, Agribus. 34:142-160, 2018) to the consumer as producer of welfare equity. The reduction of information asymmetry is a cost for the producer, and this research may be able to measure how much it would be convenient to invest in this reduction, based on the analysis of the consumer's behaviour toward his personal investment in food information acquisition

Factors of collective reputation of the Italian PDO wines: An analysis on central Italy

    No full text
As many research studies confirm, the importance of collective reputation is increasing, especially in the agro-food chain. Currently, the reputation of firms and brands is the main key driver for companies׳ competitiveness and success in modern markets. This paper empirically investigates the determinants of reputation of PDO wines in Central Italy. In particular, it uses the qualitative assessment expressed by the National Association of Sommeliers and proposes a synthetic indicator of reputation. By using different statistical sources, we also evaluate the impact of some variables on the reputation levels of individual PDO areas. We looked at the structural characteristics of the designation (number of producers, age of the designation, etc.), the minimum quality standards, and the characteristics of the economic vitality of the territories. The study aims to contribute to the debate on the role of the quality proposed by firms and reputation built over time

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
