The linguistic and discoursal features of computer mediated communication by Filipino users
Digitalk, Electronic language or Netspeak is the language of today\u27s generation in computer-mediated communication (CMC). It is characterized by the nonstandard and non conventional use and manipulation of symbols, characters, and lexical items. Hence, Digitalk is considered informal or nonstandard in existing literature. From a corpus of around 500,000 words from different social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Online Gaming, Twitter, Edmodo and Blogs, the researcher found 30 linguistic features with linguistic functions the functions were interrelated with the linguistic features. The findings revealed exceptional use of features Contraction, Parenthetical expression, Conversion, Hashtag, Synecdoche, Retention Pun, and Collocation in Filipino Digitalk. Using gender, age, and educational category as important variables in the analysis of utterances, the study revealed the following: (1) most of the linguistic features were from Facebookers (2) females are more likely to produce linguistic features over males (3) the young was the most eager users of electronic language and (4) students deviated from the standards of formal communication. From the findings, this study introduced the coined term youngerspeak, i.e. the language of Digitalkers characterized by the elders adjustment to or use of the language of the young. Regardless of their age, Filipino Digitalkers attempted to use nonstandard language in virtual communication. This study also introduced interfunctionality, i.e. multiple functions in one or multiple features, which enabled the Filipino Digitalkers to facilitate communication for efficiency, economy and expression of emotions. The linguistic features documented in this study position Filipino Digitalk as an electronic language with some distinct or unique features among Filipino Digitalkers. Filipino Digitalkers were able to resemble face-to-face communication, overcoming the shortcoming of CMC i.e. the absence of physical actions between or among communicators. With the findings of this study on the creativity of Digitalkers, it is hoped that more linguistic studies in CMC will be done especially in the local setting
Code-switching patterns, practices and functions in the tertiary technical laboratory classroom discourse
Code switching – a linguistic phenomenon where two languages occur in a single discourse – has been a subject of various linguistic studies in the Philippines. This study focuses on code-switching patterns, practices, functions, and degrees of utilization in a technical laboratory classroom. It is recommended that code-switching be allowed during informal interactions but not in formal discussion; teachers will remain models so that language preference will not be code-switching alone

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Digitalk: An exploration of the linguistic features of CMC
This pilot study was anchored on the viewpoint that language users are creative and innovative, and that Electronic English is an emerging variety of language. This study investigates the features and functions of electronic language used by Filipino Facebook users. Results of the pilot analysis of 1,671 Facebook statuses revealed that Filipino Facebookers used nine types of linguistic features. Of these nine linguistic features, code switching and acronym are the most frequently used. The linguistic features in this study show Filipino Facebookers’ competence to make use of their linguistic knowledge in order to develop innovations in communication
FB digitalking: Standard, non-standard, or hybrid?
With over two billion active users worldwide, Facebook brought the digital community to connections and opportunities. Its supremacy as focus in research articles calls for investigation on its unique language which is considered to be instrumental in the transmission of information and culture whether offline or online. This present study on Facebook language reports findings from a sub-sample of a 500,000-word corpus of communication in Social Networking Sites. The linguistic analysis
has shown that the Filipino Digitalkers have created lexical hybrids—words or expressions that are products of word- formation processes—and other features that are associated with online communication. Filipino Digitalkers have
exemplified functional use of lexical creativity in quasi-synchronous chat over Facebook. Among these were the established features of electronic communication such as acronymy, capped expression, affixation, repetition, compounding and coinage. There was also usage of what was labeled non-standard in written communication: non-capitalization, and contractions. Creativity in language use has driven FB Digitalkers to include in their utterances the features transcription of sigh, emotion, and physical feature; pun, and emoticon. This study has also explained the Filipino Digitalker’s unique use of ellipsis and punctuation which appears to have performed some pragmatic functions in communication namely immediacy and repair. This paper also addresses a current issue in language use by transfiguring Digitalk from a threat to a pedagogical tool in language classes. Digitalkers have developed an additional technologically-conditioned competence, a hybrid competence, combining both knowledge in oral and written communication online. Hence, it might prove beneficial if language teachers could start looking at digitalk as a boon, an additional hybrid competence, and an authentic linguistic resource in teaching language
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
