    Computational imaging for drill bit wear estimation

    Aerospace and automotive industries make more and more use of carbon fiber laminates. They offer high advantages in terms of mechanical performance but are difficult to work on and need precise and expensive tools. Drilling is the most common operation; drill bits must be accurately verified before use to avoid damages during the process. This paper proposes an optical inspection system for drill bits wearing estimation based on a custom-designed illumination device and a processing algorithm based on computational imaging. The elaboration of the computational image is used to measure the drill bit cutting profile. Drill bits have been worn on carbon fiber laminates, and a tool wear model has been extracted using the proposed system. The proposed method has been tested on both used and new drill bits, used in the aerospace industry

    Towards an automatic diagnosis system for skin lesions: Estimation of blue-whitish veil and regression structures

    This paper deals with ELM image processing for automatic analysis of pigmented skin lesions which represents one of the greatest challenges of dermatologic practice today. The "ELM 7 point checklist" defines a set of seven features, based on colour and texture parameters, which describe the malignancy of a lesion. It has been revealed as faster and with the same accuracy than the traditional ABCD criteria in the diagnosis of melanoma. A preliminary approach to the automated diagnosis of melanocytic skin lesions, based on ELM 7 point checklist is proposed. In particular, the image processing algorithms and classification techniques involved in the automatic detection of the occurrence of two criteria (Blue-whitish Veil and Regression structures) are introduced and the experimental results are reported

    A Networked Control System for Gas Pipeline Cathodic Protection

    Cathodic protection (CP) is the most suitable technique to limit metal corrosion in pipeline networks. To preserve the effectiveness of the CP system, the monitoring of the potential distribution along the net is essential. In distribution networks, the pipeline potential is affected by environmental time-variant phenomena, which make it difficult to estimate the potential away from the measurement point. In this paper, a novel networked control system, based on fuzzy logic and an existing wM-Bus at 169-MHz infrastructures for gas metering, is proposed. The aim is the implementation of a low-cost system able to monitor and control the pipeline potential in a suitable measurement point

    Severe anaemia after gastric biopsy in an infant with eosinophilic gastritis

    Background: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) are characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and are subclassified according to the affected site(s) as eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic gastritis, eosinophilic enteritis and eosinophilic colitis. Clinical presentation includes dyspeptic symptoms, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and gastrointestinal bleeding. Peripheral eosinophilia is usually found but is not required for the diagnosis. The treatment is based on dietary elimination therapy, consisting of removal of common food triggers, most frequently cow's milk in infants. Corticosteroids are used as first line drug therapy in EG if dietary therapy fails to achieve an adequate clinical response or is impractical. Case presentation: A four month old infant was admitted for an episode of melena and hematemesis. An esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed haemorrhagic gastritis with ulcerative lesions and fibrin. A significant gastric bleeding was noted after the procedure. The gastric mucosa biopsies showed an eosinophilic infiltration. Conclusions: A clinically relevant anaemia is a quite rare complication in infants with eosinophilic gastritis and a biopsy may worsen bleeding, to a potentially severe level of low haemoglobin. In infants with low haemoglobin levels and suspect eosinophilic gastritis a watchful follow up after the biopsy should be considered, as well as the possibility of postponing the biopsy to reduce the bleeding risk
