The snow occupies 9% of total earth’s surface on average, approximately 5 times the size of the Europe. Depending on the latitude, it lies on the ground from few days to eight months. Inquiring about the existence of a snow-sensitive design appears more than legitimate. With this aim, the present research work straddles the nordic architecture and the design of the winter city.
The key is landscape design, intended in a sense which includes aspects of architecture, ecology, urbanism, engineering and spatial practices that are able to shape the setting of our daily life. The snow in the landscape is not just linked to the visual and aesthetic experience, it’s an element that deeply transforms the reality around us. When it falls, details disappear, ground layouts go hidden, colors turn toward a gray scale, sounds are deadened and smells are subtle. Everything becomes a game of tensions, rounded shapes, volumes and connections that changes the ways in which we live our territories.
Thus, cities, villages, streets, public spaces, parks, infrastructures are forced to face the need to adapt their spaces to accommodate
the presence of snow. For the first time this book has systematically investigated the issue. Studies and comparison have been done among intriguing modern and contemporary experiences, to shed a light on design principles specifically related to the snow.
Findings were pursued through an inductive approach. Starting from the understanding of case studies it has been possible to build an overall vision about design principles. Among the multi-faceted international context, three main trajectories, in which snow-sensitive design seems to be oriented, emerge:
1) working on temporality;
2) designing the safety;
3) promote active outdoor living.
What clearly comes out is the need for a change of point of view, that allows us to reconsider the snow from limitation, or simple climatic circumstance, to inviting design opportunities. Unlike traditional forms of adaptation to the climate, the contemporary snow-sensitive landscape design involves broader aspects, such as the adoption of flexible spatial configurations, the poetry of the limited use of resources, the reinterpretation and improvement of architectural rhetoric, ecosystem functionality, openness to climate change, attention to ethical, aesthetic and experiential issues. First of all snow-sensitive design is based on the concept of year-round usability, which means the possibility to use open spaces all year round. The key aspect is the temporality, intended as the ability of the project to create shifting spatial and programmatic conditions, particularly suitable to accommodate the snow in all the stages, from the first pristine fall to the
dirty melting material. Other common principles are the increase of attractiveness, the playful and creative use of the snow, to be achieved also through temporary artistic practices

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
From white gold to rocky landscapes : innovative trends for Apennine Resorts
The research thesis focuses on ski resorts located at the Italian Apennines and how the landscape and living scenarios are changing due to climate change. These resorts have a significant impact on the mountain landscape and its economy. Historically, in similar geographic regions throughout the world, actitivities, population centers and holiday centers have grown around ski resorts, testifying to a period of progress, growth and optimism. Nowdays, the situation is reversing. The entire Italian territory is at the center of an area considered a “hot spot” of climate change but most existing research primarily focus on the Alps.
This academic paper intends to classify the existing infrastructure along the Apennines with the purpose of reflecting on the need to explore new landscapes to determine more sustainable future environmental uses and balances, finding strategies involving a mix of reconversion, extension or abandonment of some structures, and considering new investments to strengthen and improve the mountain ski areas with greater potential
