Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
THE USE OF CRITICAL REVIEW TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SKILL IN WRITING ESSAY TEXT
Today\u27s students are familiar with technology, this makes their desire to write less. They are not taught to get used to writing something, they are used to typing something improperly without the rules of language use and correct spelling. Whereas, writing is a standard passive skill that students must at least master considering the demands that they must always write, whether it is daily assignments, writing proposals, journals and even theses. To improve students\u27 English writing skills, researchers used critical review as one of the learning methods in the classroom. Critical review requires students to understand the details of the text, including the arguments, evidence, and conclusions presented. By reviewing something critically, students find it easier to express their thoughts in writing. This research is a classroom action research that has 2 cycles, the object of this research is English education students in semester 4 at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. The results show that there is an increase in the average score of students\u27 writing skill, and there is also an increase in student learning activities in the classroom.

THE INFLUENCE OF PEER EDITING ONLINE TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL
Lots of students find the difficulties when they have to put their thoughts into writing. Moreover, when they need to do the proofreading and editing their own writing, this inevitably makes writing exceptionally tiring and distressing. In this study, researchers focused on a series of writing processes, especially editing and proofreading activities. The objective of this research was to find out the influence of Peer Editing online technique towards the students’ research proposal writing skill and to know and to describe whether the effectiveness of the students’ research proposal writing skill who learn through peer editing online is higher than those who learn through conventional technique. The research was conducted by using a quasi-experimental design with pretest and post-test. The population of this research are the students at the fifth semester of English education major at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung that consisted of 63 students in 2 classes. The sample of this research were two classes, they were as control class and experimental class. Control class was taught by Individual writing while experimental class was taught by peer editing online technique. In getting the data, the researchers used writing test. The result showed that based on the calculation, the researchers got that = 5.41 and = 2.00 and 2.66. It means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. From the result above, the researchers state that there is an improvement and a significant influence of Peer editing online technique towards students’ research proposal writing skill
IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH CONTEXT CLUES STRATEGY
This study aims to enhance students\u27 reading comprehension through the use of context clues. This research focused on first semester English Education major students at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. It comprised of 20 students. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles. The researchers collected data using both tests and non-tests. This study employed both formative and summative tests. During non-testing, researchers used observation sheets and field notes. The researchers analysed the data using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study found that using context clues effectively improves students\u27 learning and reading comprehension. In cycle 1, 8 students passed the exam with a percentage of 40%, while 12 students failed with a percentage of 60%. It improves in cycle two, with 16 students passing (80%) and 4 failing (16%). It may be concluded that using the context clues approach delivers positive learning effects. The mean score of total score in cycle 1 was 6.34 while in cycle 2 the mean score was 7.68. The improvement of students’ learning activity from cycle 1 to cycle 2 was 0.58. The context clues strategy successfully improved the learning activity and reading comprehension of first semester English education students at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2023/2024
THE INFLUENCE OF INSTAGRAM’S PICTURES TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ ESSAY WRITING SKILL
This research reports on the effectiveness of Instagram’s pictures towards the students’ essay writing skill. Instagram becomes one of the famous social media in the world, in this research Instagram is used as a medium to improve the students’ essay writing skill. The aims of the research were to know and to describe student’s essay writing skill and to know and to describe whether there is influence of Instagram’s pictures towards student’s essay writing skill. The research was conducted by using a quasi-experimental design with pretest and post-test. The population of this research are the students at the sixth semester of English education major at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung, that consisted of 76 students in 2 classes. The sample of this research were two classes, they were as control class and experimental class. Control class was taught by Individual writing while experimental class was taught by Instagram’s pictures. In getting the data, the writer used writing test. The result showed that based on the calculation, the writer got that = 5.92 and = 1.67 and 2.39. It means that . So, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. From the result above, the writer states that there is a positiveinfluence of Instagram’s pictures towards students’ essay writing skill
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
