Young people and the labour market: a review
This book is the upshot of the EU IRSES project "The political economy of youth unemployment". The project has been an opportunity to set up a network of scholars (mainly from Italian and Russian universities) dealing with youth labour market and policies, viewed in a perspective of comparison between countries. In this Introduction, we briefly summarize, first, the most relevant articles already published by the authors involved in the EU project; and, afterwards, the studies included in the ten chapters of this boo
Marshallian vs Jacobs effects: which is stronger? Evidence for Russia unemployment dynamics
This paper studies the influence of diversification and specialization on one of the main indicators of the Russian labour market: unemployment growth. The purpose of the work is to find out which effects dominate in the Russian regions, Marshallian or Jacobs, and whether this predominance is stable for different time periods. We tested empirically the following hypotheses: 1) the dependence of the unemployment growth on the concentration or diversification is nonlinear due to possible overlapping effects of urbanization and localization; 2) the influence of the concentration or diversification on the unemployment growth depends on the time period. To test these hypotheses, we use nonparametric additive models with spatial effects. Both hypotheses found empirical confirmation, with each effect prevailing in different time periods: Marshallian effects were prevalent in 2008-2010, and 2013-2016, while Jacobs effects were prevalent in 2010-2013
Youth unemployment, labour productivity and the evolution of the labour markets in Europe
The size and persistence of youth unemployment has become unacceptable in some European countries, particularly in Southern Europe. Stagnation in labour productivity, on the other hand, goes back to the ‘90s and even worsened after the burst of the crisis. A further evidence is that labour market reforms in many countries introduced, over the past twenty years, a set of newly designed job contracts that allowed the use of temporary work. We describe these phenomena and countries heterogeneity in four dimensions: labour productivity, youth unemployment, EPL (Employment Protection Legislation) and temporary work, and their dynamic

In the first part of the article, the author corrects the traditional understanding of the term “mediator” applied to the literary sphere, offering a new definition which allows to distinguish between several levels of mediation in the literary field and present a complete paradigm of women’s mediating roles: publishers; editors; translators; literary critics; patrons; hostesses of artistic, literary and socio-literary salons; mothers, wives, widows and other female relatives of writers; mistresses; pupils and muses; memoirists; diarists; and prototypes of literary heroines. Besides, this part substantiates the dynamism of these roles and justifies the choice of two types of sources (ego-texts and bibliographic reference editions) chosen for the analysis of their genesis and evolution in literary history. The second part is devoted to the description and semantic-statistical analysis of eight ego-texts ( four male and four female ones), revealing a number of constants in the formation of the female mediator paradigm in nineteenth-century Russian literature. The third part presents a detailed hermeneutic and semiotic analysis of two women’s ego-texts (Avdotia Panaeva’s and Elena Stackenschneider’s) which illustrate the mechanisms of formation and functioning of women’s mediating roles and their actualization in memoirs and diaries. The article ends with general conclusions defining the specificities of the evolution of women mediators’ roles in nineteenth-century Russian literary life.
Olga Koubrak: Protecting the Caribbean Sawfish
Student editor Patrick Sheppard sits down with Professor Olga Koubrak of the Schulich School of Law to discuss her work on the legal frameworks to protect sawfish in the Caribbean. Olga is the author of a 2018 paper titled “A Future for a Forgotten Predator: An Assessment of International Legal Frameworks for Protection and Recovery of the Caribbean Sawfishes,” and co-author of the more recent 2022 article titled “Strengthening Marine Species Protections in Cuba: A Case Study on the Critically Endangered Smalltooth Sawfish.” Patrick and Olga discuss the sawfish, means of protecting the animal domestically and internationally, problems in enforcement and international cooperation, and how the public perception of an animal affects how it is protected by authorities. The metaphysics of death in prose of Olga Tokarczuk
The article presents and analyses the motive of death in the works of Olga Tokarczuk. The author focuses on anthropological and philosophic grasp of that category in her narrative prose. The text included here is a fragment of one of the chapters of author’s doctoral thesis entitled: The metaphysics of death, time and love in the works of Olga Tokarczuk
Labour productivity of young and adult temporary workers and youth unemployment: a cross-country analysis
The latest crisis has exacerbated two negative macroeconomic phenomena, particularly in Southern Europe. The size and persistence of youth unemployment has become unacceptable after 2010. Stagnation in labour productivity instead goes back to the ‘90s, but it has not improved since then and even worsen with the crisis. In this paper we analysed these two macroeconomic features, using aggregate data, in relation to labour market characteristics. Reforms of regulation, in many countries over the past twenty years, introduced a set of newly designed job contracts that allowed the use of temporary work. At the same time, Employment Protection Regulation encompassed temporary workers too. The availability of new contracts and EPLT changed the incentives of firms to vary their labour needs, and to invest in new technology.
Eventually, this should have an impact on labour productivity and unemployment. We distinguished between temporary young and adult workers and, conditional to the level of
employment protection, we estimate their labour productivity and the correlation with the rate of youth unemployment. We use macroeconomic data for countries within groups (former Euro zone countries, Euro-zone plus Russia, OECD, G7, G8). Preliminary evidence shows that the share of adult temporary workers clearly and negatively affects labour productivity, no matter the group of countries
Determinants of youth unemployment in Russian regions
In spite of a growing body of literature investigating the determinants of youth
unemployment, studies at sub-national level are still scarce, especially for Russian
regions. This article is an innovative attempt to analyse econometrically the key factors
affecting the youth unemployment rate and the ratio between youth and total
unemployment rates for 75 Russian regions in 2000–09. The existing literature on
regional labour market performance and dynamics suggested the use of a large set
of explanatory variables (with indicators of the level of economic development,
the demographic situation and migration processes, and the export–import levels) in
a GMM panel data analysis, taking into account both spatial correlation and
endogeneity problems. Although we were searching for structural determinants, we
also investigated the effect of the 2008–09 financial crisis. The econometric results,
presented and discussed using several models, have key policy implications for both
national and regional levels of government
