The General Multilingual Dictionary of Metalinguistic Terminology
Micromolded Polylactid Acid With Selective Degradation Rate
Poly(Lactic Acid), PLA represents a very interesting polymer for industrial applications because of its good processability, the possibility of being obtained from renewable sources, good physical properties, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The major depolymerization mechanism and the step that controls the rate of PLA biodegradation in compost is represented by the hydrolysis. The characteristic of being degradable is not per se an advantage: the inclination to degrade in the presence of water represents a limit for specific industrial applications, especially for durable components that are designed for long-period utilization such as in the automotive, electronic, and agricultural sectors, as well as in medical applications. Being able to control the degradation rate would be a real advantage: a product should preserve its characteristics during processing and for a time comparable to its application but should be nevertheless fully biodegradable at longer times. Furthermore, a gradient of properties could allow producing samples in which some portions degrade at a faster rate and some others at a slower one. Different methods can be used to influence the degradation rate of PLA, some examples are blending, copolymerization and surface modification. However, these change the physical properties of the material. Any factor influencing the rate of hydrolysis can affect the biodegradation process. The objective of this work is verifying the possibility to modulate the rate of degradation in the same part, in time and at different rates. The method is represented by a technique that influences locally the morphology of the samples. Biphasic samples (half amorphous and the other half crystalline) were obtained by micro-injection molding and the degradation process was monitored by means of hydrolysis tests. The analysis confirmed the crystalline regions show a slightly better resistance to the hydrolysis compared to the amorphous
The Specific purpose of English for CLIL: the students’ perspective
EU internationalization policies have had a great impact on Italian mainstream educational curricula and have given impetus to the spread of Content and Language Integrated Learning (henceforth CLIL), a dual-focused approach which shares a number of key features with English for Specific Purposes (henceforth ESP), such as the use of content from different non-linguistic subjects and the development of academic and communication skills, and with general English courses, such as communicative language teaching methodology.
In view of the fact that students are the beneficiaries of content and language curriculum requirements, the aim of this study is to give voice to their perspective. It is the authors’ experience that students have mostly been asked about their level of appreciation of CLIL, but this study intends to explore how and if they are coping with the demands of bilingual instruction. Our findings are derived from three separate questionnaires administered to students, English as Foreign Language (henceforth EFL) teachers and CLIL subject teachers from twenty Italian upper secondary schools of the Campania Region situated in southern Italy. The survey results are intended to attain the twofold aim of identifying the specific purpose of English for CLIL and exploring the impact on students’ learning practices

Accentuating Autonomy in the Self-access Center
The Self-Access Centre of the University of Naples "L'Orientale", since its foundation in
the late 1990's, has been implementing various ways of enhancing autonomy in language
learning. Students attending the centre are offered a wide range of language learning
materials as well as personally tailored courses and other resources useful to raise
awareness and metacognitive reflection. The present study aims to investigate how language educators and counsellors can
promote autonomy by linking the experience of classroom language learning to that
which occurs within the self-access centre
Processing Science through Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
This paper presents a professional teacher development model that applies to the field of content based instruction as implemented in Italy. Its recipients are Italian upper secondary school science teachers involved in teaching a non-language subject in English, which is a foreign language for the teachers as well as for their students. Although the language of instruction is not spoken as a second language in Italy, the authors believe that this model, due to the added challenge of working with foreign language students who need to improve their language proficiency and conceptual understanding, will provide useful insight into scaffolding techniques and accessibility processes that can be exploited by practitioners working in second language acquisition environments
