Best available technique for water reuse in textile SMEs (BATTLE LIFE Project)

    No full text
The textile sector has a high water demand. Its biggest impact on the environment is related to primary water consumption (80-100 m3/ton of finished textile) and waste water discharge (115-175 kg of COD/ton of finished textile, a large range of organic chemicals, low biodegradability, colour, salinity). Therefore, reuse of the effluents represents an economical and ecological challenge for the overall sector. A user-friendly technique to improve the environmental performances of textile finishing enterprises is pursued with the BATTLE project presented in thispaper

Nanofiltration of low-contaminated textile rinsing effluents for on-site treatment and reuse

Intensive water-demanding industries require an effective management of water sources and wastes in order to implement as much recovery as possible with the quality standards of the production activity. Besides the application of good environmental practices pursued by the IPPC Directive, an optimal methodological solution for each industrial site has to be applied in order to minimize the discharge and produce an alternative water source at the same time. This work presents operational data on the treatment of five different representative effluents from rinsing operations of textile finishing processes. Membrane filtration of separate effluent streams was tested at pilot scale to obtain data on flow rate, fouling tendency, durability and quality of the permeate. Comparison among different membrane types was performed at bench scale, and pilot runs were carried out on the selected membrane. A cost evaluation of the preliminary design of treatment works obtained up-scaling the operational indexes is reported as well. Nanofiltration of the investigated effluents proved to be a cost-efficient way to assure constant good water quality demanded by textile finishing processes

Effect of selected textile effluents on activated sludge nitrification process

In this study, a recently developed methodology for the assessment of the inhibitory effect on nitrifying biomass was applied to several textile effluents from productive processes. Effluents are classified according to the degree of inhibition as EC50 (concentration producing 50% nitrification inhibition); the investigated textile effluents showed a wide range of EC 50 ranging from 20 ml gVSS-1 (83 ml l-1) to values above 100 ml gVSS-1 (300 ml l-1) for effluents produced by rinsing phases. Taking into account biodegradability and toxicity evaluations, most of the effluents showed a good treatability in conventional biological wastewater treatment plant. On the other hand three textile effluents showed significant toxic effects towards nitrifying biomass. In any case, the proposed procedure represents an efficient tool to prevent treatment failures due to toxic discharges

[Dentinogenesis imperfecta. Scanning electron microscopic study and microanalysis]. Dentinogenesi imperfetta. Studio al microscopio elettronico a scansione e microanalisi.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) is an inherited dentine defect which affects both the primary and secondary dentitions. Shields et al. in 1973 suggested a classification of DI within three types: type I, associated with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), type II and type III. Although the varying clinical, radiographic and histological findings in DI have been described in detail, an available method for closer examination of the abnormal dentine matrix, electron microscopy, has seldom been used. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies can help to understand the pathogenesis of the different types of heritable dentine defects and the diagnosis and classification of these diseases. The aim of the present study was to evaluate a case of DI using scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis. METHODS: Dentine was obtained from tooth samples from a fourteen-year-old boy affected by DI and from third molars extracted for therapeutic reasons used as controls. Samples were observed with a scanning electron microscope, scanning electron micrographs were evaluated with an image analysis program and specimens were finally observed with a scanning electron microscope equipped for micro-analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained showed that the total number of dentinal tubules was significantly reduced and the presence of a dentine mineralization defect in the patient affected by DI, in comparison to the controls

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
