Case e stanze per scrivere. Da Louisa May Alcott a Jo March di "Piccole donne"
This essay examines Louisa May Alcott's struggle to establish physical and symbolic spaces for writing in nineteenth-century America. Through analysis of her personal writings and Little Women, it explores how Alcott navigated between domestic obligations and literary ambitions. The author traces Alcott's various writing spaces—from Orchard House's cramped desk to boarding house rooms—revealing her ambivalent relationship with domesticity and family. Through Jo March's character, Alcott experiments with the Künstlerroman, depicting the attic, bedroom, and boarding house as evolving spaces of creativity. Ultimately, the essay demonstrates how material conditions and gender expectations shaped women writers' spatial negotiations and artistic identities
The early part of the essay focuses on the dramatic change in the critical status of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a major point of reference for feminist criticism through the 1970s and 1980s, who later became the target of accusations of racism in the 1990s. The author first traces the influence of second-wave and third-wave feminism on Gilman studies, and then looks at the ideological and rhetorical common ground shared by certain postures of revisionist criticism in the 1990s along with the culture of political correctness, with special reference to John L. Jackson’s notion of “de cardio racism”
L'uomo diventato donna e altri racconti
Il libro contiene i testi originali e le traduzioni italiane di tre racconti di Sherwood Anderson: "I Want to Know Why" (1919); "I'm a Fool" (1923); "The Man Who Became a Woman" (1923). The book contains the original texts and the Italian translations of three short stories by Sherwood Anderson: "I Want to Know Why" (1919); "I'm a Fool" (1923); "The Man Who Became a Woman" (1923). The stories, all set in the milieu of horse races, revolve around the theme of initiation into adulthood, addressing concerns about gender identity and sexual orientation. The texts are preceded by an introductory essay and are followed by an apparatus of translation notes, by a bio-biograhical note about the author, and by an annotated bibliography
The literary ‘discovery’ of America in the Italian literary cul ture between the 1930s and 1950s has long been narrated as the endeavor of a new generation of writers and translators. In Il mito dell’America negli intellettuali italiani (1969), the classic study by Dominque Fernandez that has sealed this interpretation, Cesare Pavese and Elio Vittorini feature as the exceptional leaders of an intellectual crusade that opposes
the ‘old’ generation of americanists such as Mario Praz, Carlo Linati, and Emilio Cecchi. The essay questions the notion of generation underlying Fernandez’s book in light of the recent studies that have been conducted on translations during Fascism. More specifi cally, the case of the translators Alessandra Scalero and Ada Prospero not only expands the group of the mediators of American literature in the period under
consideration, but also the very notion of a ‘new generation’ of Italian americanists
“It Plays out Like a Novel”: Mad Men e la legittimazione artistica nella serialità televisiva
Focusing on Mad Men (2007-2015), the essay starts from the assumption that the comparison established between contemporary (American) Tv series and novels is part and parcel of the strategies of legitimization that in the last twenty years have changed the perception of serial television. The suggested line of inquiry is twofold. On the one hand, the cultivation of a relationship with literary texts seems to depend on the cultural capital and the internalized dispositions of the creators, critics, and audience of the series. On the other hand, the latter’s narrative and stylistic complexity does lend itself to be analyzed through an intersemiotic comparison with the novel. Both perspectives suggest the coexistence in Mad Men of a variety of novelistic models, from the realistic to the historical novel, from the postmodern to the proto-modernist one
David Greven's Gender Protest and Same-Sex Desire in Antebellum American Literature: Margaret Fuller, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville (review)
Killing the Angel in the House: The Marble Faun and the Imagination of Violence
The essay offers a specific investigation of female violence as both an explicit and a covert theme of The Marble Faun. Woman's capacity to inflict harm is not just adumbrated in Miriam's instigation to murder, but keeps resurfacing in multiple images, fragments, and allusions that mobilize a vast cultural archive. Unlike most readings of Hawthorne’s last completed novel, this essay argues that the paradigm of active violence fails to successfully separate the sinfulness of the "dark lady" Miriam from the purity of the "fair maiden" Hilda. Rather, the specter of disruptive agency haunts both characters and appears to be inextricably associated with their identity as self-dependent artists living abroad, inhabiting studios that subvert the nineteenth-century definition of women as private domestic subjects. The symbolic association between female artists, violence, and the erosion of the domestic ideal is further explored through Hawthorne’s subtly unsettling encounters with actual women (Harriet Hosmer, Anna Jameson, Fredrika Bremer) living in Rome, as reported in his journal
