Investigating accommodation in language proficiency interviews using a new measure of lexical diversity
Lexical diversity is an important indicator of language learners’ active vocabulary and how it is deployed. Traditionally it has been measured by the Type-Token Ratio (TTR), the ratio of different words to total words used. Unfortunately, TTR is a function of sample size: larger samples of words will give a lower TTR and even commonly used measures derived from TTR which are claimed to be independent of sample size are problematic. To overcome this, the authors have developed an innovative measure of vocabulary diversity, D, based on mathematically modelling how new words are introduced into larger and larger language samples, and have produced software (vocd) to calculate it. Previous research by the authors into language proficiency interviews (Richards and Malvern, 2000) investigated linguistic and discourse accommodation of teacher-testers using a wide range of student and teacher variables. In a study of teenage learners of French, the aspect of teachers’ language in oral interviews that was most responsive to the ability of their students was lexical diversity. The analysis reported here focuses on this finding in greater depth using the new measure, D. The relationship between D and other measures of foreign language proficiency is investigated, the Ds of students and teachers are compared and the correlations between teachers’ D and students’ proficiency are computed. Results firstly demonstrate the validity of D as a measure of vocabulary diversity and the effectiveness of vocd as a tool to analyse language data. Secondly, with regard to accommodation processes in oral testing, the two teachers did not finely tune their vocabulary diversity to the proficiency of individual students. Instead, each teacher roughly adjusted his or her language to the ability of the class they examined. </jats:p
Destiny Diaz named winner of Ouachita\u27s David Glaze Music Competition
Destiny Diaz won the first David Glaze Music Competition, held Thursday, April 28, at Ouachita Baptist University. Sponsored by the Division of Music in Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts, the competition featured performances from outstanding students in vocal and instrumental music performance programs at Ouachita.
Diaz is a senior instrumental music education major from Malvern, Ark. She received a $1,000 award for her winning performance on flute of “Allegretto Malincolico” by Francis Poulenc and “Fantasie, Op. 79” by Gabriel Fauré
Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA 93-0796-2555: Malvern Minerals Company, Hot Springs, Arkansas
In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration to determine the prevalence of silicosis in specific ground silica operations, a medical survey was conducted at Malvern Minerals Company (SIC-1446), Hot Springs, Arkansas. Workers with 1 year or more of work in grinding areas or areas downstream from grinding participated in the medical survey which included a questionnaire, spirometry, and a chest X-ray. There were 12 current workers and 11 former workers who participated in the medical survey. Of the 23 workers surveyed, 39% had chest radiographs consistent with silicosis. Two workers had radiographs consistent with progressive massive fibrosis. Abnormal lung function was identified in 26% of the participants. The author concludes that there was a substantial prevalence of silicosis among current and former ground silica workers at this facility. The author recommends that a medical monitoring program be instituted at this site
Update on the diabetic foot 2012: The 14th biennial Malvern Diabetic Foot Conference, May 9-11, 2012
The 14th biennial Malvern Diabetic Foot Conference was held in May 2012. Physicians, podiatrists, nurses, orthotists, surgeons, radiologists, and other professionals attended to reflect on the diabetic foot. The conference comprised interactive workshops, oral presentations of new research findings, and lectures from leading figures in the world of the diabetic foot. Over the 3 days, topics such as epidemiology, neuropathy, screening, vascular disease, prevention, and management among others were discussed. The conference has been an excellent platform from which to share new and ongoing research and it will without a doubt improve the treatment of the diabetic foot across the world. © The Author(s) 2013
