    Thermalization in Kitaev's quantum double models via Tensor Network techniques

    We show that the Davies generator associated to any 2D Kitaev's quantum double model has a non-vanishing spectral gap in the thermodynamic limit. This validates rigorously the extended belief that those models are useless as self-correcting quantum memories, even in the non-abelian case. The proof uses recent ideas and results regarding the characterization of the spectral gap for parent Hamiltonians associated to Projected Entangled Pair States in terms of a bulk-boundary correspondence.Comment: 84 pages.     On the limits of engine analysis for cheating detection in chess

    The integrity of online games has important economic consequences for both the gaming industry and players of all levels, from professionals to amateurs. Where there is a high likelihood of cheating, there is a loss of trust and players will be reluctant to participate — particularly if this is likely to cost them money. Chess is a game that has been established online for around 25 years and is played over the Internet commercially. In that environment, where players are not physically present “over the board” (OTB), chess is one of the most easily exploitable games by those who wish to cheat, because of the widespread availability of very strong chess-playing programs. Allegations of cheating even in OTB games have increased significantly in recent years, and even led to recent changes in the laws of the game that potentially impinge upon players’ privacy. In this work, we examine some of the difficulties inherent in identifying the covert use of chess-playing programs purely from an analysis of the moves of a game. Our approach is to deeply examine a large collection of games where there is confidence that cheating has not taken place, and analyse those that could be easily misclassified. We conclude that there is a serious risk of finding numerous “false positives” and that, in general, it is unsafe to use just the moves of a single game as prima facie evidence of cheating. We also demonstrate that it is impossible to compute definitive values of the figures currently employed to measure similarity to a chess-engine for a particular game, as values inevitably vary at different depths and, even under identical conditions, when multi-threading evaluation is used

    Generalized TASE-RK methods for stiff problems

    A family of Time-Accurate and Stable Explicit (TASE) methods for the numerical integration of Initial Value Problems in stiff Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) y'(t) = f (t, y) was recently introduced in [1]. The main idea was to make local extrapolation of a stabilized Euler method. More recently, in [3] a similar approach by considering the stabilization of arbitrary explicit Runge-Kutta methods (TASE-RK) was analyzed. In this case the explicit Runge-Kutta method integrates a transformed ODE obtained by multiplying the vector field f (t, y) by a certain operator which approximates the identity mapping up to a given order p. The main inconvenience of both approaches is that to reach order p the solution of p2 linear systems plus the evaluation of p derivatives are required per integration step.In order to substantially reduce the computational costs of the former approaches in the linear system solution, but maintaining the good accuracy and stability properties, a new family of TASE-RK methods which allow to introduce a few more free parameters are considered. The formulation of the methods was conceived to be implemented not only in sequential mode but it admits parallelism in a straightforward way. Furthermore, since these methods are linearly implicit, connections to the class of W-methods [19] are properly established. The order conditions for the new class of methods are widely studied by using the rooted tree theory. For p = 3, 4, new methods with p sequential stages and order p are derived and compared on semidiscrete 1D and 2D Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) to those in [1,3] and other standard Rosenbrock and W-methods in the literature.(c) 2023 The Author(s).     Semi-subsistence and sustainability: aquaculture in Tabasco, Mexico

    This thesis explores the physical and the socio-economic conditions for aquaculture in Tabasco, Mexico, seeking to find how aquaculture can best be supported to reduce poverty. On-farm physical, technical and social surveys were carried out in four municipalities, covering different physiographic regions. The surveys establish that the environmental conditions are frequently good for aquaculture. Despite efforts to bring farmers into more intensive commercial systems, aquaculture has developed mainly to improve subsistence, as one component of semi-subsistence farms. In order to evaluate these semi- subsistence systems, the thesis explores current debates on 'sustainability' and on 'subsistence'. As no single approach to sustainability per se seems appropriate to apply to these systems, new indicators and methods need to be developed which are appropriate to evaluate systems poor in cash generation but rich in social assets. Subsistence aquaculture is arguably more sustainable than commercial, monocultural aquaculture in environmental and social terms. It has become part of the economic diversity of the communities, increases food security, reduces the use of fossil fuels, promotes the careful management and recycling of wastes and the careful stewardship of natural resources, can help in the protection and enhancement of biological diversity and yields a feeling of self- empowerment. From the surveys, socio-economic and cultural realities are more important than physical conditions in determining the present state of aquaculture in Tabasco. The existence of some successful farmers' micro-businesses shows that once farmers receive continuous technical assistance, subsidies and access to markets, bringing them into commercial aquaculture is possible. Such help however, is rarely provided at present by the local extension institutions, which face internal problems resulting from inadequate budgets. This thesis argues that, in these circumstances, semi-subsistence aquaculture is a good option for the poor as many semi-subsistence systems are highly valued and have the potential to become more efficient and productive if locally based research is conducted with an understanding of farmers' cultures and motivations

    International capital flows : do short-term investment and direct investment differ?

    The authors examine the behavior of four major components of international capital flows in 15 developing and industrial countries. Striking differences in the behavior of the component flows arise in general specifications that allow the flows to interact. For example, the behavior of international short-term investment appears to be sensitive to changes in all the other types of international capital flows, including direct investment, but direct investment appears to be insensitive to such changes.     The purpose of the present work was the anatomical, histological and histochemical description of Rhamdia quelen juvenile digestive system. Samples of gut were fixed, dehydrated and included in paraffin and then stained with haematoxylin and eosin. For the identification and differentiation of mucosubstances the preparations were treated with Periodic Acid Schiff, Alcian Blue pH 0,4 and 2,5 and PAS/AB pH 2,5. Anatomical details of the oesophagus were like a short tube with primary and secondary mucous folds. The stratified epithelium is composed of three cellular types: small cells, abundant goblet cells with acid and neutral mucosubstances (MS) and large acid cells. The stomach is J-shaped and its mucosa presents broad and deep folds in relaxing state. Histologically, the stomach shows three different regions: cardiac, fundic and pyloric region. The luminal surface of the epithelium consists of a layer of secretory columnar cells of neutral MS. Tubuloacinar glands were surrounded by connective and muscular smooth fibers bundle. The intestine extends from the stomach until the anus, and four different sections can be distinguished: ascending, descending, convoluta and terminal straight. It was identified a simple columnar epithelium mainly composed by two cellular types: absorptive cell and goblet cell neutral MS secretory. On the basis of the anatomical and histological study carried out, we conclude that R. quelen presents an alimentary canal compatible with species that possess omnivorous nutritious habits.Fil: Hernandez, David Roque.     EFECTO DE LA AMONIFICACION DE LA PAJA DE SORGO, SOBRE SU VALOR NUTRICIONAL

    El objetivo del siguiente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del proceso de amonificación para mejorar la calidad nutricional de la paja de sorgo en nivel proteico. La escasez de forrajes y la baja calidad del mismo sobre todo en la época seca, son factores que mayormente inciden en los bajos rendimientos productivos observados en los rebaños rumiantes de las diferentes regiones. En general el alto contenido de paredes celulares, altamente lignificadas y el bajo nivel proteico característicos de diferentes materiales forrajeros como es el sorgo, esto limita el aprovechamiento ruminal de los mismo por tal motivo el aporte nutritivo es limitado. La amonificación es uno de los tramites químicos empleados para mejorar el valor nutricional de los diferentes tipos de forrajes en forma de heno de tal manera como es el sorgo. Es importante recalcar que este tipo de alimentación como es el la paja de sorgo amonificado es un alimento nutritivo que se viene cultivando desde años atrás y solamente es para animales rumiantes no para otros animales debido a que la urea es convertida en amoniaco durante el proceso a amonificación por la cual los rumiantes son los únicos que digieren el amoniaco por medio de microorganismos que tienen en el rumen, no es recomendable brindar este tipo de alimentación a los animales que se encuentran en una condición corporal baja ya que no lograría transformar el amoniaco. El corte del sorgo para ensilaje se efectúa aproximadamente a los 90 días después de la siembra, cuando la planta se encuentra en la etapa de grano contiene de un 30 a 35 % de materia seca. El corte se realiza con un picado de forraje a una altura de 15 a 20 cm sobre la superficie del suelo en trozos de 2 a 5 cm. El forraje picado se coloca en una bolsa hermética el cual se asperja la solución de urea se cierra la bolsa totalmente que no tenga entrada de oxígeno para su procedimiento de fermentación se deja reposar por 21 días. Después de los 21 días se abrió la bolsa se observó cambios de color, olor fuerte a amoniaco se trabajó con las muestras de esquilmos con urea reposa por 21 días y otra muestra sin urea se realizaron los analices de van soest. Los resultados obtenidos fueron con alto nivel PC y FDN a comparación del esquilmo sin urea
