MANUALE DI COMUNICAZIONE, SOCIOLOGIA E CULTURA DELLA MODA, VOL.III, IL MADE IN ITALY

    No full text

The sedimentary substrate of the Colli Albani volcano

The structure, age and facies distribution of the sedimentary substrate of the Colli Albani volcano has been investigated by analysing sedimentary xenoliths enclosed in pyroclastic and phreatomagmatic deposits from different eruptive centres of the volcano, for comparison with the stratigraphies of deep wells drilled in the area and the known surface geology of the areas surrounding the volcano. Thin-section analysis has been carried out on the same xenolith samples collected and discussed by Funiciello and Parotto (1978. Il substrato sedimentario nell’area dei Colli Albani: considerazioni geodinamiche e paleogeografiche sul margine tirrenico dell’Appennino Centrale. Geologica Romana, 17, 233–287.) and Amato and Valensise (1986. Il basamento sedimentario dei Colli Albani: risultato di uno studio degli ejecta dei crateri idromagmatici di Albano e Nemi. Memorie Societa` Geologica Italiana, 35, 761–767.), largely from the maars deposits of the most recent Via dei Laghi period of activity of the volcano. The pre-orogen marine stratigraphic sequences range from Late Triassic?–Lower Lias to Middle Miocene, with carbonate platformto- basin facies. These sequences are very similar to those cropping out in the Sabina area to the north and NE of the volcano. Upper Cretaceous carbonate platform units, similar to those cropping out in the Lepini Mts, to the east of the volcano, have been recognized only in the xenoliths from the Nemi maar. Similar to that observed in the outcropping geology of the Sabina region, no evidence of siliciclastic xenoliths related to the Upper Miocene foredeep units have been found. The Upper Miocene?–Lower Pliocene to Upper Pliocene post-orogen marine sedimentary cycle has been recognized in almost all the eruptive centres, and has similarities with the sedimentary units present in the Rome area. The absence of marine Quaternary sediments among the xenolith types suggests that the Colli Albani area was continental before the onset of volcanism

Harms and benefits of using aspirin for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease: a narrative overview

    No full text
Aspirin is one of the most often used drugs for prevention and treatment of a variety of thrombotic disorders. This narrative review aims to provide an overview of evidence highlighting potential benefits and relative harms of aspirin in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. The authors summarize key findings of the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) Investigator Group randomized trial and also provide a comparative overview of recent meta-analyses. Overall, all-cause mortality was largely heterogeneous, with some meta-analyses showing a modestly decreased risk in patients taking aspirin, with others reporting no effects, but the ASPREE Investigator Group trial evidencing 14% higher risk. Regarding cardiovascular disease, the most favorable impact could be noted for major adverse cardiovascular events, with most meta-analyses reporting a decreased risk in people receiving aspirin. Conversely, the ASPREE Investigator Group trial demonstrated no significant impact of aspirin on risk of cardiovascular mortality or ischemic stroke. A modest favorable effect of aspirin in decreasing the risk of myocardial infarction was noted in two meta-analyses, but not in other reports or in the ASPREE Investigator Group trial. Furthermore, one meta-analysis reported a lower risk of future cancer, others failed to report a significant effect, and the ASPREE Investigator Group trial reported a 31% increased risk. Unlike these conflicting outcomes, the bleeding risk of patients receiving aspirin was found to be consistently enhanced in all reports reviewed. These recent findings would lead us to conclude that the harms of aspirin in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease may be larger than the benefits, especially in the elderly general population

Serine/threonine kinase 39 is a candidate gene for primary hypertension especially in women: Results from two cohort studies in Swedes

    No full text
Background As recently pinpointed by a genome-wide association study the serine/threonine kinase 39 (STK39) is a candidate gene for hypertension. This kinase is strongly implicated in sodium reabsorption by the kidney through its modulating effect on furosemide-sensitive and thiazide-sensitive channels. The aim of our study was to test the effects of the STK39 rs35929607A > G polymorphism on blood pressure (BP) levels and the prevalence and incidence of hypertension in middle-aged Swedes participating in two urban-based surveys in Malmo (Sweden). Methods The rs35929607A > G polymorphism was genotyped in 5634 participants included in the cardiovascular cohort of the 'Malmo Diet and Cancer-cardiovascular arm' (MDC-CVA) study and successively in 17 894 participants of the 'Malmo Preventive Project' (MPP) both at baseline and at reinvestigation after a mean of 23 years. The effect of the same single nucleotide polymorphism on salt sensitivity was tested in 39 participants of the Salt Reduction to Avoid Hypertension study. Results Both before and after adjustment for covariates, the functional rs35929607A > G polymorphism was associated with higher SBP and DBP values in the MDC-CVA, but not in the MPP. In both surveys, the polymorphism was associated with hypertension prevalence; after adjustment using the autosomal-dominant model, the odds ratio for hypertension ranged between 1.077 (MPP at baseline) and 1.151 (MDC-CVA) with P-value less than 0.05. After stratification for sex, the results remained statistically significant in women, but not in men. Carriers of the G-allele displayed an increase in salt sensitivity. Conclusion Our results from two large cohort studies support previous evidence about the association of the STK39 rs35929607A > G variant with hypertension, especially in women. If further confirmed in successive studies, owing to its pivotal role in sodium reabsorption at the renal tubule level, STK39 might prove to be a suitable target for antihypertensive therapy. The greater effect of the STK39 rs35929607A > G polymorphism in women with respect to men deserves further investigation. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
