Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Genetics of Dilated Cardiomyopathy: Clinical Implications
PURPOSE OF REVIEW:
This review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the genetic background of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), with particular attention to the genotype-phenotype correlations and the possible implications for clinical management.
RECENT FINDINGS:
Next generation sequencing (NGS) has led to the identification of an increasing number of genes and mutations responsible for DCM. This genetic variability is probably related to the extreme heterogeneity of disease manifestation. Important findings have associated mutations of Lamin A/C (LMNA) and Filamin C (FLNC) to poor prognosis and the propensity to cause an arrhythmic phenotype, respectively. However, a deeper understanding of the genotype-phenotype correlation is necessary, because it could have several implications for the clinical management of the patients. Furthermore, the correct interpretation of pathogenicity of mutations and the clinical impact of genetic testing in DCM patients still represent important fields to be implemented. A pathogenic gene mutation can be identified in almost 40% of DCM patients. The recent discoveries and future research in the field of genotype-phenotype correlation may lead to a more personalized management of the mutation carriers towards the application of precision medicine in DCM
Myocarditis: Which Role for Genetics?
Purpose of Review: Myocarditis is a polymorphic disease, both in its presentation and clinical course. Recent data suggests that the genetic background, interacting with environmental factors, could be diriment both in the susceptibility and evolution of myocarditis in different clinical presentations. The aim of this paper is to expose the current available evidences and the evolving concepts on this topic, in order to provide insight for improving the clinical management of those patients. In this regard, the main goal is an optimal characterization of each patient’s risk, with the purpose of individualizing the treatment and the follow-up. Recent Findings: The latest research highlights the possible prognostic role of some pathogenic mutations that could create a vulnerable myocardium prone to myocardial inflammation and also to the development of a long-lasting cardiomyopathy. Summary: The identification of these genetic defects and of myocarditis patients requiring genetic testing is emerging as a challenge for the future. In fact, identifying a possible genetic background responsible for a particularly high-risk profile could be of extreme importance in improving management of myocarditis. This and many other aspects in the genetics of myocarditis remain uncovered, and further studies are expected based to refine our daily clinical practice
Cardiomyopathies in children: Classification, diagnosis and treatment
Purpose of review Cardiomyopathies are rare in the pediatric population, but significantly impact on morbidity and mortality. The present review aims to provide an overview of cardiomyopathies in children and some practical guidelines for their prognostic stratification and management. Recent findings Pediatric cardiomyopathies may present as isolated cardiac muscle disease or in the context of complex clinical syndromes. The etiologic characterization represents an important step in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiomyopathies because of its impact on prognosis and on therapeutic measures. Indeed, replacement therapy is nowadays widely available and changes the natural history of the disease. More complex is the management of isolated cardiomyopathies, which lack specific therapies, mainly aimed at symptomatic relief. In this context, heart transplantation shows excellent outcomes in children, but wait-list mortality is still very high. Device therapy for sudden cardiac death prevention and the use of mechanical assist devices are becoming more common in the clinical practice and may help to reduce mortality. Summary Providing insight into pediatric cardiomyopathies classification helps in the prognostication and management of such diseases. Recent years witnessed a significant improvement in mortality, but future research is still needed to improve quality of life and life expectations in the pediatric population
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The evolutionary conserved gene C16orf35 encodes a nucleo-cytoplasmic protein that interacts with p73
C16orf35 is a highly conserved gene positioned upstream of the alpha-globins in humans and other vertebrates. The deduced protein is also highly conserved, it has no defined structural features or domains, and its function is currently unknown. Here we show that the C16orf35 protein has nuclear and cytosolic distribution, and can localize to PML nuclear bodies. The C16orf35 protein was detected in several human transformed cells lines, and studies of transient and stable overexpression indicate that increased levels of C16orf35 inhibit cell proliferation. We also find that C16orf35 interacts with human p73, and represses transcription by TAp73gamma but not by TAp73alpha. This selectivity is not due to differential interaction, since C16orf35 binds both p73 variants. Our data suggest that C16orf35 can modulate differentially the specific activities of selected p73 isoform
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
