Sea Farms as a Safe and Sustainable Food Source: An Investigation on Use of Seaweeds for Liver Detoxification and Reduced DNA Damage in Lates Calcarifer (Bloch, 1790)
The present research was conducted on fish mesocosms using a non-lethal cadmium concentration as a trace metal pollutant to verify, respectively, whether post-remediation by Ulva lactuca reduces the need for activation of cellular antioxidative defenses and DNA repair mechanisms. Spectrophotometric evaluation of the antioxidant Glutathione S-Transferase and total soluble and fat-soluble antioxidant capacity, molecular detection of genotoxicity by mobility shift tests, and radio detection of DNA repair by PolyADP-ribosilation (PARP) were performed on the Lates calcarifer liver. Cadmium represents an environmental risk but its toxic effect seems mitigated by the bioaccumulation properties of Ulva lactuca. We detected high total soluble antioxidant capacity, low Glutathione S-Transferase levels as well as low levels of PARP and undamaged DNA in the fish liver when seaweeds were added as compared to standard feeding. These results suggest a safe and sustainable implementation of Lates calcarifer sea farming using Ulva lactuca
Ricetta elettronica e certificati on line: analisi giuridica in ottica sicurezza e privacy
[Medical electronic prescriptions and certificates online: legal analysis on security and privacy]The objective of the digitization of the medical prescriptions and certificate takes shape in our legislative system through complex rules, disseminated in a variety of interventions. The author of this article discusses in detail the legislation on electronic prescribing, since Decree Law. 269 of 30 September 2003 up to the data protection code. In addition to the electronic prescription by the family doctor, the author also presents the legal regulations concerning the issuance of medical certificates to be sent via Internet to the administrative control agency and to employer. The data protection code is a fundamental point, especially for the obligations imposed on the general practitioner regarding the information to be signed by the patient and the ownership of the data requested. Given the sensitivity of the data processed, security must be particularly ensured. The author finally illustrates the creation of databases in the health sector, emphasizing that it is an operation of extreme importance in terms of privacy, therefore should be paid great attention to the use of security measures

Reproductive expression dynamics and comparative toxicological perspective of beta estrogen receptor gene in the male wall lizard, Podarcis sicula Rafinesque, 1810 (Chordata: Reptilia).
Over the last few decades, due to its relevant function in male reproduction assessment, important molecular achievements have been made in the molecular characterization of estrogen receptor genes in various species. Our work focuses on a male seasonal breeder, the bioindicator Podarcis sicula, because of its peculiar gonadal anatomy, similar to that of humans. Based on the cloned lizard’s gene sequence fragment of estrogen receptor beta, esr2 (GenBank JN705543.1), we found DNA binding domain identity of 99% as well as a homologous sequence with humans. Furthermore, in order to better illustrate how this gene is regulated in the lizard’s reproductive system organs, we investigated the transcriptional activity of esr2 in brain and testis tissues during mating and winter stasis phases of the reproductive cycle. Quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses performed on male gonadal tissues demonstrate a significant increase in esr2 expression during mating compared to the winter stasis period, while in the brain, esr2 shows the opposite trend. Next, we provide morphological evidence of the detrimental effect on spermatogenesis of a pure anti-estrogen treatment (ICI 182,780) and the corresponding effect on esr2 expression in lizard specimens during the mating period which, upon treatment, was found to be no different from the expression levels in winter stasis both in the brain and in the testis. In this study, we explore the potential use of Podarcis sicula as a model for human testis development and maturation, as well as esr2 expression for toxicological screening in one-testis gonadectomy
Assessment of the biological effects of biofouling and antibiofouling EDCs: Gaeta Harbor (South Italy) benthic communities' analysis by biodiversity indices and quantitative gpx4 expression.
The most representative organisms of the Harbor
of Gaeta Gulf in South Italy were analyzed for biofouling
by visual census and confirmed later by molecular
approach on an artificial Conatex panel dipped 3 m into a
eutrophic area during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mitochondrial Cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1(COI) gene was
sequenced from 20 different marine species (flora: 2 families, 2 orders; fauna: 16 families, 11 orders) to test whether
the morphology-based assignment of the most common
biofouling member was supported by DNA-based species
identification. Twelve months of submersion resulted in
generation of sufficient data to obtain a facies climax
represented mainly by the bivalve mollusk, Mytilus
galloprovincialis. Specific diversity and variations of the
biofouling biomasses were analyzed using two different
anti-biofouling paints: an endocrine disrupting chemical
(EDC)-containing metal biocide, and a biocide-free paint.
Also, their effects on detoxification and reproductive health
of M. galloprovincialis were evaluated using glutathione
S-transferase enzymatic activity and RTqPCR expression
of the fertility antioxidant gene glutathione peroxidase 4
(gpx4). The obtained data provide useful indications on
which future investigations may be focused and may
become a potential management tool for a harbor biofouling database to assist local administrations in EDCs
protection of autochthonous benthic communities and their
fertility using innovative antifouling paints
