Tele-Ethics in Telepractice for Communication Disorders

    No full text
In this article, the author provides an overview of tele-ethics, the ethical delivery of clinical services via the Internet and telecommunication technologies, with a focus on communication disorders. Guidance for new and experienced telepractitioners is gleaned from the Code of Ethics of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), ASHA position statements and other documents on telepractice, and other health-care disciplines (e.g., psychology and medicine).\ud \u

Generalization of the Calogero-Cohn bound on the number of bound states

    No full text
It is shown that for the Calogero-Cohn type upper bounds on the number of bound states of a negative spherically symmetric potential V(r), in each angular momemtum state, that is, bounds containing only the integral \int^\infty_0 |V(r)|^{1/2}dr, the condition V'(r) \geq 0 is not necessary, and can be replaced by the less stringent condition (d/dr)[r^{1-2p}(-V)^{1-p}] \leq 0, 1/2 \leq p < 1, which allows oscillations in the potential. The constants in the bounds are accordingly modified, depend on p and \ell, and tend to the standard value for p = 1/2.It is shown that for the Calogero-Cohn type upper bounds on the number of bound states of a negative spherically symmetric potential V(r)V(r), in each angular momemtum state, that is, bounds containing only the integral  0V(r) 1/2dr\int~\infty_0 |V(r)|~{1/2}dr, the condition V(r)0V'(r) \geq 0 is not necessary, and can be replaced by the less stringent condition (d/dr)[r 12p(V) 1p]0,1/2p<1(d/dr)[r~{1-2p}(-V)~{1-p}] \leq 0, 1/2 \leq p < 1, which allows oscillations in the potential. Pediatric Telerehabilitation and Cleft Palate Teams

    No full text
Cleft lip and cleft palate are common of congenital disorders, affecting ~ 1/750 live births. Children with orofacial clefts face a number of challenges between birth-18 years. It is widely recognized that because orofacial clefting presents many interrelated problems, the optimal standard of care for affected children is “team-based.” While the team approach has many benefits, (e.g., coordinated interdisciplinary care; reduced travel and clinic visits), cleft palate teams are rare in the rural US. Moreover, volunteer surgical teams that travel to underserved international settings typically remain for a finite time, and do not engage in the long-term follow-up that is essential for comprehensive care for children with clefting. This presentation described promising telerehabilitation applications for interdisciplinary pediatric cleft palate teams. Numerous cleft palate team functions (in whole or in part) could readily translate to telerehabilitation practice. These include: prenatal counseling; infant feeding instruction; pediatric consultations; pre-and post-surgical consultations; speech and language assessment and management; hearing assessment; orthodontic evaluation and planning; nutritional counseling; genetic counseling; psychological counseling; social work consultations; and, radiologic technique and interpretation

Judaism’s Critique of Idolatry and the Beginning of Liberative Religion

    No full text
Around the globe religion is under attack. Humanists, secularists and atheists depict believers as deluded and dangerous. The aim of this book is to challenge this perception. Sensible Religion defends the validity and emphasises the excitement of the religious quest across the faiths. It demonstrates that the practice of sensible religion is often a courageous path pitted against religious extremism and secularism. Written by committed believers from the major world's faiths, the book endorses the term 'sensible' as expressing religious reasonableness as well as sensitivity to criticism and new insights. Followers of the different traditions live ordinary lives in the mainstream of the world. This volume therefore addresses beliefs and the manner in which these convictions relate to social, political and ethical action. Countering the argument that religion is at root extremist and irrational, Sensible Religion brings together thoughtful and critical reflections by leading thinkers about humanity's spiritual quest.Contents: Foreword, Peter Vardy; Preface, Dan Cohn-Sherbok and Christopher Lewis; The religious quest, Christopher Lewis; A sensible Judaism of love, Michael Lerner; Judaism’s critique of idolatry and the beginning of liberative religion, Melissa Raphael; Islam, Tim Winter; Retrieving the equilibrium and restoring justice: using Islam’s egalitarian teachings to reclaim women’s rights, Sara Khan; Reclaiming jihad, Dawoud el-Alami; The reasonableness of Christianity, Keith Ward; Christianity and sensible religion: a feminist approach, Mary Grey; The ecosystem of religions: a Hindu perspective, Rita D.
