Erosion de la nature, stratification de l'humain. Tournant ontologique et écologie sémiotique

    No full text
The article “Érosion de la nature, stratification de l’humain: Tournant ontologique et écologie sémiotique” by Pierluigi Basso Fossali explores the interplay between ecological thought and semiotics, emphasizing the ontological challenges posed by the relationship between nature and culture. The author critiques the oversimplification of nature as a static regulatory principle, advocating instead for a dynamic semiotic ecology that acknowledges the interdependence of cultures, environments, and symbolic systems. The text highlights the necessity of rethinking environmental discourse through a multi-layered perspective that transcends traditional dichotomies, such as nature versus culture, while embracing the epistemological contributions of diverse civilizations. By integrating the notions of resistance, translation, and intersubjectivity, the article argues for a pluralistic understanding of ecological frameworks as both cultural constructs and practical paradigms for addressing global environmental challenges

Playing with autism. Encountering Simona Concaro by her music. Vol. 1.1

    No full text
Playing with Autism contains twenty-four original pieces for piano, recorded and carefully transcribed in current music notation by Pierluigi Politi and Hanna Shybayeva. Simona Concaro, the author, is a young woman suffering of low-functioning autism. She lives in Cascina Rossago, a farm-community, designed to meet the needs of people with autism, in Oltrepo pavese (Italy). Since she was three, Simona Concaro has created original compositions on piano, instrument she learned by herself, refusing any kind of musical education. In everyday life, Simona does not use verbal language and has low autonomy. Her music, on the contrary, contains interesting features – melodic, rhythmic and harmonic –, even in the presence of some iterative elements, typical of the autistic spectrum

What R&D assets say about firm profitability

    No full text
Research and development (R&D) activities are usually considered a key factor for achieving superior performances. Using a sample of 11,897 manufacturing Italian firms, we examine the relationship between R&D expenditure that is capitalized as an intangible asset and some proxies of firm profitability over a period of four years in order to explore whether R&D assets can help investors in the identification of profitable firms. Contrary to expectations, this paper found a negative and/or an insignificant association between R&D assets and proxies of firm profitability. Although there are several possible explanations for this result, what we learn from this study is that R&D assets are not on average a reliable indicator for detecting profitable firms. Research findings revealed that firms with R&D assets appear to be not so profitable, large and levered

Assessing the benefits of residential demand response in a real time distribution energy market

    No full text
In the field of electricity distribution networks and with the advent of smart grids and microgrids, the use of Distribution Locational Marginal Price (D-LMPs) in a Real Time (RT) distribution market managed by a Distribution System Operator (DSO) is discussed in presence of empowered residential end-users that are able to bid for energy by a demand aggregator while following Demand Response (DR) initiatives. Each customer is provided by a transactive controller, which reads the locational market signals and answers with a bid taking into account the user preferences about some appliances involved in DR activities and controlled by smart plugs-in. In particular, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) appliances and shiftable loads are controlled so that their consumption profile can be modified according to the price of energy. In order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of energy and cost saving, an innovative probabilistic methodology for evaluating the impact of residential DR choices considering uncertainties related to load demand, user preferences, environmental conditions, house thermal behavior and wholesale market trends has been proposed. The uncertainties related to the stochastic variations of the variables involved are modeled by using the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. The combination of MCS and RT distribution market simulation based on D-LMPs are used to assess the operation and impact of the DR method over one month. Simulations results on an 84-buses distribution network confirmed that the proposed method allows saving costs for residential end-users and making the distribution network much reliable against network congestions thanks to the use of D-LMPs

Much Ado About Nothing: An Answer to B. D. Shaw’s The Myth of the Neronian Persecution

    No full text
In recent years, the veracity of the tradition of the martyrdom of the apostles Peter and Paul has been disputed; recently, Brent Donald Shaw denied the historicity of the persecution of Christians. In this article, the author analyzes the texts of Tacitus and Suetonius as well as other texts omitted by Shaw and demonstrates the inconsistency of the hypotheses put forward by negationist scholars (Zwierlein; Shaw) from a theoretical and historical point of view

Parrasio allo Studium Urbis: la praefatio alle silvae di Stazio

    No full text
In this article the author provides a critical edition, with commentary, of the praefatio to Publius Papinius Statius’ silvae composed by the humanist Aulus Ianus Parrhasius. The text, which is preserved in ms. V D 15 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III, Naples, dates from the period of Parrhasius’s second stay in Rome (1514-1518). It provides information about the scholars connected with Pomponius Letus and illuminates both Statius’ reception in the Renaissance and teaching practices in the first half of the 16th century
