Distorted neutrino oscillations from time varying cosmic fields
Cold, ultralight (≪eV) bosonic fields can induce fast temporal variation in neutrino couplings, thereby distorting neutrino oscillations. In this paper, we exploit this effect to introduce a novel probe of neutrino time variation and dark matter at long-baseline experiments. We study several representative observables and find that current and future experiments, including DUNE and JUNO, are sensitive to a wide range of model parameters over many decades in mass reach and time-variation periodicity
Boosted dark matter at neutrino experiments
Current and future neutrino experiments can be used to discover dark matter, not only in searches for dark matter annihilating to neutrinos, but also in scenarios where dark matter itself scatters off standard model particles in the detector. In this work, we study the sensitivity of different neutrino detectors to a class of models called boosted dark matter, in which a subdominant component of a dark sector acquires a large Lorentz boost today through annihilation of a dominant component in a dark matter-dense region, such as the galactic Center or dwarf spheroidal galaxies. This analysis focuses on the sensitivity of different neutrino detectors, specifically the Cherenkov-based Super-K and the future argon-based DUNE to boosted dark matter that scatters off electrons. We study the dependence of the expected limits on the experimental features, such as energy threshold, volume and exposure in the limit of constant scattering amplitude. We highlight experiment-specific features that enable current and future neutrino experiments to be a powerful tool in finding signatures of boosted dark matter

Boosting (in)direct detection of dark matter
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Physics, 2017.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 153-178).In this thesis, I study the expected direct and indirect detection signals of dark matter. More precisely, I study three aspects of dark matter; I use hydrodynamic simulations to extract properties of weakly interacting dark matter that are relevant for both direct and indirect detection signals, and construct viable dark matter models with interesting experimental signatures. First, I analyze the full scale Illustris simulation, and find that Galactic indirect detection signals are expected to be largely symmetric, while extragalactic signals are not, due to recent mergers and the presence of substructure. Second, through the study of the high resolution Milky Way simulation Eris, I find that metal-poor halo stars can be used as tracers for the dark matter velocity distribution. I use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to obtain the first empirical velocity distribution of dark matter, which weakens the expected direct detection limits by up to an order of magnitude at masses </~ 10 GeV. Finally, I expand the weakly interacting dark matter paradigm by proposing a new dark matter model called boosted dark matter. This novel scenario contains a relativistic component with interesting hybrid direct and indirect detection signatures at neutrino experiments. I propose two search strategies for boosted dark matter, at Cherenkov-based experiments and future liquid-argon neutrino detectors.by Lina Necib.Ph. D

Influence of the magnetic field on the wear behavior of a cutting tool during the turning operations
This study concerns tests carried out without lubrication on a universal lathe to study the influence of the magnetic field on the wear of a cutting tool made of metallic carbide. The tests parameters are: the intensity of the magnetic field (from 0 to 28.5 kA.m-1), the cutting speed (from 6 to 136 m.min-1), the advance speed and the cut depth (pass). Both of the previous parameters are fixed respectively at 0.125 mm.rev-1 and 0.5 mm. The material being cut is made of XC38 steel. The tool wear is evaluated by weighing method (before and after each test). The results showed that the magnetic field has an influence on wear and that there is a critical value (H = 16.5 kA.m-1) for which wear is minimum. Also, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical microscope observations revealed the existence of three types of wear that are: flank wear, crater wear and wear by plastic deformation. Moreover, we concluded that, the increase of the magnetic field modifies the shape and the morphology of chips and rises the contact temperature.</jats:p
