Interplay of crystallography, Raman microspectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry for studying the reaction between ruthenium complexes and proteins
No full textRuthenium complexes are evaluated as prospective pharmaceutical agents and have emerged as promising alternatives to Platinum compounds for anticancer chemotherapy. Due to the large interest of this class of compounds for bioinorganic chemistry and biomedical applications, it is demanding to investigate their reactivity with proteins. The reaction between NAMI-A and AziRu, two structurally related Ru(III) compounds with antitumor activity, and the model proteins hen egg white lysozyme, HEWL, and bovine pancreatic ribonuclease, RNase A, was investigated through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, Raman microscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography [1-3]. In all cases, formation of stable metal-protein adducts was unambiguously demonstrated. Similarly, the product of the reaction between the paddle-wheel tetrakis(acetato)chlorido diruthenium(II,III) complex, [Ru2(μ-O2CCH3)4Cl], and HEWL has been characterized [4]. Taken together, the results of these works suggest that the combined used of X-ray crystallography, Raman microspectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry is a valuable tool for examining in detail the protein metalation process.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. La storia di Fiume di Pietra: come nasce un’esperienza di aggregazione all’ombra del Vesuvio
Osservare ciò che è accaduto a Napoli tra le pendici del Vesuvio e la città metropolitana, tra la fine del ’900 e l’inizio del nuovo secolo, in un momento in cui sembrava ormai possibile raccogliere i frutti dell’impegno politico e sociale vissuto coralmente e non limitato a eventi e manifestazioni di pratiche divenute abituali ed epidermiche, significa portare l’attenzione su fatti e persone che hanno in maniera emblematica rappresentato la vitalità, la creatività, la capacità di riflettere su come realizzare la comunità ed essere protagonisti del cambiamento. Vi ricordate i containers? Il terremoto dell’80 non scuote solo le mura ma l’intera struttura umana della Campania. A tredici anni dall’evento sismico, i containers erano ancora a bruciare sotto il sole ai piedi del Vesuvio, il grande gigante addormentato. Luigi Castellano/Luca chiamava a raccolta artisti, poeti, scrittori, per ricucire il vuoto e la lacerazione del tessuto civile e per combattere la crisi voluta nei territori del cratere «attraverso stagionalità politiche precostituite in termini di “vacanza” civile, morale e politica». Da tale tensione morale, nasce la Federazione Territoriale Città del Monte con l’intento «di cambiare e incidere costruttivamente sui problemi di governo e gestione dell’area vesuviana. I “vesuviani”, da tempo condannati ed esclusi, non possono continuare a reinventare la loro sopravvivenza». Paola Acampa, fattasi interprete del pensiero di Luca e delle necessità vitali del territorio vesuviano, rende possibile, attraverso l’incessante incontro di forze culturali, l’esplicitazione di uno spirito collettivo e l’affermarsi delle idee del cambiamento. Negli stessi anni l’esperienza della Federazione Territoriale Città del Monte non è stata un’esperienza isolata, infatti, contemporaneamente con Schermo ’93 le attività del cineforum al Roma di Portici si ampliano con performance ed esposizioni di artisti contemporanei appartenenti per la maggior parte al territorio. L’intreccio tra associazionismo e istituzioni è poi sancito dall’apertura del cineforum alle scuole non solo di Portici ma di tutte le città del Miglio d’Oro. Città del Monte, cineforum, mostre, alimentano magicamente una nuova dimensione data dal vedere e guardare insieme i problemi del territorio e il fare cultura è inteso come agire collettivo e non atto individuale. Guardare insieme significa anche scambiare idee e trovare soluzioni partecipate per la crescita socio-culturale ed economica; insomma coscienza e azione collettiva costituiscono l’humus di nuove creazioni artistiche e il consolidarsi d’incontri in un luogo privilegiato: Fiume di Pietra che testimonia non solo uno spazio condiviso ma la capacità di condividere il proprio tempo e l’inconscio collettivo nello spazio stratificato della memoria del vulcano. Gli anni ’90 sono anche gli anni in cui è forte la volontà di riscatto del Miglio d’Oro per il superamento del degrado ambientale e sociale amplificatosi nel dopo-terremoto. È istituito l’Ente per le Ville Vesuviane e incominciano i restauri. Le attività promosse da Paola “I luoghi negati del Miglio d’Oro” sono tese a promuovere la partecipazione di cittadini e studenti in un processo di riappropriazione e di sensibilizzazione alla tutela del patrimonio storico e artistico, quando ancora non era possibile neanche visitare tali beni
