Korcak dimension as a novel indicator of landscape fragmentation and re-forestation

    No full text
In spatial ecology, habitat fragmentation is an important problem since its increase may create habitat remnants threatening species survival. There are several descriptors to characterize the processes leading to fragmentation. Some of them are model-dependent, while others suffer from the combined error of the perimeter and area measurements of the fragmented patches. In this article – using a theoretical model and a worked example – we would like to show that the Korcak-plot (and the corresponding fractal dimension, the Korcak-dimension) is not only a proper way to describe patchiness, but also applicable to detect secondary processes, like re-forestation, following the primary fragmentation

Cseh-Szombathy Sámuel utazása naplója és album amicorumai tükrében

In this paper the itinerary of Sámuel Cseh-Szombathy, a former student of the Reformed College of Debrecen is analysed. After having finished his study in Gottingen and Vienna, in 1790, he embarked on a journey that took him through Southern German cities, the Dutch Republic, England and finally France. During his journey, he wrote an itinerary, in which he recorded his costs and what he as a medical doctor found interesting, i.e., hospitals, madhouses, natural history collections, and of course, the most important medical personalities of his time. The most important questions this essay should answer are, how unique this itinerary is, and how well it fits in the Hungarian tradition of itineraries of the Early Modern Time. The itinerary seems to be unique because it was written after the peregrinatio academica, and the main goal of the author was his professional development. This kind of professional development journeys became common in the 18th19th century Hungary, too. In the quantitative part, the itinerary clearly followed the Hungarian-European traditions of the 18th century
