Stephen Crane and the Green Place of Paint

    No full text
This paper addresses the influence of French Impressionist painting on the late nineteenth-century writer Stephen Crane (1871-1900), a key figure in the movement of literary naturalism and the author of, among other stories, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, The Red Badge of Courage, The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, and The Blue Hotel. A journalist and war-time correspondent as well as a literary figure, Crane produced a remarkable number of poems, prose pieces, short stories, and “sketches” in a period of time spanning little more than a decade. Much of his work is characterized by formal devices analogous to Impressionist painting’s seemingly antithetical devices of atmospheric (or animated) paint and flat paint. These formal devices put into question normative, anthropocentric distinctions between human and nonhuman subjects and objects. The short story “An Experiment in Misery” (1889) describes in impressionist painterly language the city’s human and nonhuman subjectobjects that implies that ecogenic (nonhuman-made) human and nonhuman subject-objects are outcast, defaced, or bullied by the anthropogenic (humanmade) environs of the modern industrial city. The influence of French Impressionist painting on Crane has been addressed by scholars. However, these scholars do not comment on its ecocritical significances. I argue that Crane’s animation of the nonhuman figure and the oft-commented on flattening or caricaturing of the human figure by Crane express a nascent ecological argument.補正完畢TW

    Walter R. Crane notebooks, MSS.0366

    No full text
Abstract: Two bound notebooks of handwritten lecture notes made by Walter R. CraneScope and Content Note: The collection contains two bound notebooks of handwritten notes made by Walter R. Crane. The first page of each notebook says "Columbia University Dept. of Mining, N.Y.C." Both notebooks have a course description pasted in the front as well. It is not known if Crane was a student or teaching at Columbia when these notes were written. The notes are on mining and its various systems, and contain many sketches of equipment, mines, etc.Biographical/Historical Note: Walter Richard Crane was probably born in Massachusetts, in 1870 or 1871. He was a mining engineer and professor of mining engineering and was the author of several books on mining, two of which, Indexes to Mining Engineering Literature, are considered to be classics in the field and are still in print. Crane was possibly associated with the University of Alabama through the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa Research Center

Art (and) Criticism: Hart Crane and David Siqueiros

    No full text
The article focuses on an analysis of Hart Crane’s essay “Note on the Paintings of David Siqueiros.” One of Crane’s few art-historical texts, the critical piece in question is first of all a tribute to the American poet’s friend, the Mexican painter David Siqueiros. The author of a portrait of Crane, Siqueiros is a major artist, one of the leading figures that marked the history of Mexican painting in the first half of the twentieth century. While it is interesting to delve into the way Crane approaches painting in general and Siqueiros’ œuvre in particular, an analysis of the essay with which the present article is concerned is also worthwhile for another reason. Like many examples of art criticism—and literary criticism, for that matter—”Note on the Paintings of David Siqueiros” reveals a lot not only about the artist it revolves around, but also about its author, an artist in his own right. In a text written in the last year of his life, Hart Crane therefore voices concerns which have preoccupied him as a poet and which, more importantly, are central to modernist art and literature

    Dynamic Quay Crane Allocation

    No full text
We introduce simple rules for quay cranes to handle containers along a berth where vessels arrive continuously in time. We first analyze a model where workload is continuous. Our analysis shows that if the system is configured properly, it will always converge to a state with the maximum possible throughput regardless of external disruptions or changes in workload. Numerical simulations based on a discrete workload model suggest that, by following the same rules, the system can still converge to state with throughput that is very close to its upper bound

Active heave compensation of a floating crane using electric drive

    No full text
Floating cranes have shown their benefits in port operations and in offshore tasks. With the increase of offshore wind farms, installation and maintenance of the wind turbines require crane vessels for multiple tasks. In order to operate in open sea regardless the ocean waves, active heave compensation system is necessary to be installed. In this work an electric drive is proposed for active heave compensation of a floating crane, as more sustainable solution among other benefits. Dynamic model of a floating crane was derived for model based control. Different control algorithms were developed and numerically tested for efficiency.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Transport Engineering and Logistic

D-CRANE: a database system for utilization of cranes

    No full text
Crane selection is a time consuming process that involves extensive data manipulation. Several systems have been developed to assist in selecting cranes and in planning their lifts. These systems lack the support of a comprehensive database to provide information about crane configurations, their lift capacity settings, and rigging equipment. Although crane manufacturers provide data for their cranes, these data are not always consistent and do not follow a standard format. This creates frequent problems for crane users, especially when interpolating the load charts. This requires the users to make decisions based on job conditions and categories of cranes, which can lead to costly mistakes. This paper describes the development of a comprehensive database (called D-CRANE) designed to support efficient selection of cranes. D-CRANE has been developed in collaboration with an industrial partner. It includes operational information about crane geometry, lift configurations, lift capacity settings, accessories, and attachments. D-CRANE has a number of interesting features: (i) powerful graphics capabilities, featuring a multimedia environment and a practical user-friendly interface; (ii) capacity to accommodate different types of commercially available cranes; (iii) powerful storage, sorting, and query routines; (iv) flexibility in using metric and empirical units; (v) capability of operating in a network environment, and (vi) minimum disk storage space. D-CRANE is a relational database designed using entity relation diagram and is implemented using MS-Access database management system. A case example is presented to demonstrate the use and capabilities of D-CRANE.Key words: database management system, crane selection, planning critical and heavy lift. </jats:p
