(In)stability of D-dimensional black holes in Gauss-Bonnet theory

    No full text
We make an extensive study of evolution of gravitational perturbations of D-dimensional black holes in Gauss-Bonnet theory. There is an instability at higher multipoles l and large Gauss-Bonnet coupling alpha for D = 5, 6, which is stabilized at higher D. Although a small negative gap of the effective potential for the scalar type of gravitational perturbations exists for higher D and whatever alpha, it does not lead to any instability

Static Gauss-Bonnet black holes at large D

    No full text
We study the static black holes in the large D dimensions in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a cosmological constant, coupled to the Maxewell theory. After integrating the equation of motion with respect to the radial direction, we obtain the effective equations at large D to describe the nonlinear dynamical deformations of the black holes. From the perturbation analysis on the effective equations, we get the analytic expressions of the frequencies for the quasinormal modes of charge and scalar-type perturbations. We show that for a positive Gauss-Bonnet term, the black hole could become unstable only if the cosmological constant is positive, otherwise the black hole is always stable. However, for a negative Gauss-Bonnet term, we find that the black hole could always be unstable. The instability of the black hole depends not only on the cosmological constant and the charge, but also significantly on the Gauss-Bonnet term. Moreover, at the onset of instability there is a non-trivial static zero-mode perturbation, which suggests the existence of a new non-spherically symmetric solution branch. We construct the non-spherical symmetric static solutions of the large D effective equations explicitly.NSFC [11275010, 11335012, 11325522]SCI(E)ARTICLE

THE HUMMEL BONNET An investigation of its production, design and significance in military uniform

    Get PDF
The role of experiment has long been established as an effective means through which to explore past aspects of material culture, architecture and site formation processes (Coles 1979, Mathieu 2001 etc.). Items of dress have not routinely been incorporated in experimental projects. This investigation explored the utility of archaeological methods for gaining insight into how aspects of the uniformed body was constructed in Victorian Britain, focusing specifically on the production, design and significance in military uniform of the hummel bonnet. The work included a detailed review of available sources of evidence especially Calotypes, detailed study of extant artefact evidence and an experimental reconstruction of a hummel bonnet, using recognised experimental archaeological theory. In undertaking this task, the techniques and approaches used are typical of experimental archaeology and analysis and examination of historical costume and are put to the test in order to evaluate their utility for this kind of research. The research considered material and method of construction aiming to adopt as near an accurate reconstruction as possible. Findings of the research offer insight into experimental techniques and how these could be developed to further understanding of historical artefacts and makes comment about the role and value of re-enactment as a presentation of ‘history’ and the risks this may pose

Holographic superconductors with various condensates in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

    No full text
We study holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We consider two particular backgrounds: a d-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole and a Gauss-Bonnet-AdS soliton. We discuss in detail the effects that the mass of the scalar field, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the dimensionality of the AdS space have on the condensation formation and conductivity. We also study the ratio omega(g)/T(c) for various masses of the scalar field and Gauss-Bonnet couplings.National Natural Science Foundation of Chin

Rev. D 92, 126005 (2015); Eur. Phys. J. C 76, 100 (2016)]. In this work, we calculate the configurational entropy in Gauss-Bonnet braneworld models. Our results restrict the range of acceptability of the Gauss-Bonnet scalar values. In this way, the information theoretical measure in Gauss-Bonnet scenarios opens a new window to probe situations where the additional parameters, responsible for the Gauss-Bonnet sector, are arbitrary

Hydrodynamics with conserved current via AdS/CFT correspondence in the Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

    No full text
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the hydrodynamics with conserved current from the dual Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. After constructing the perturbative solution to the first order based on the boosted black brane solution in the bulk Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we extract the stress tensor and conserved current of the dual conformal fluid on its boundary, and also find the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the dual conformal fluid. Our results show that the Gauss-Bonnet term can affect the parameters such as the shear viscosity eta, entropy density s, thermal conductivity kappa and electrical conductivity sigma. However, it does not affect the so-called Wiedemann-Franz law which relates kappa to sigma, while it affects the ratio eta/s. In addition, another interesting result is that eta/s can also be affected by the bulk Maxwell field in our case, which is consistent with some previous results predicted through the Kubo formula. Moreover, the anomalous magnetic and vortical effects by adding the Chern-Simons term are also considered in our case in the Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000291259200009&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Astronomy & AstrophysicsPhysics, Particles & FieldsSCI(E)20ARTICLE12null8

Bonnet, Jacques (1664-1724) À Paris, Chez d\u27Houry fils... 1724 avec Privilège du Roy Jacques Bonnet described the dances of antiquity, listed the ballets performed at European courts between 1450 and 1723, and described several of these in detail. The treatise was put together from the manuscripts of Pierre Bourdelot, and it was itself later regarded as an authoritative source by Louis de Cahusac and others

ENTROPY QUANTIZATION OF D-DIMENSIONAL GAUSS–BONNET BLACK HOLES

    No full text
The entropy and area spectra for D-dimensional Gauss–Bonnet black holes are investigated from two different approaches, which are the quasinormal modes approach developed by Hod, Kunstatter and Maggiore, and the very recent method proposed by Ropotenko. The two methods give the same results, which show that the entropy spectrum of Gauss–Bonnet black holes is equidistantly quantized with spacing ΔS = 2πℏ, while the area spectrum is not equally spaced. </jats:p
