    On the Psychological Mechanism of Ontogenetic Development in the Context of Developmental and Educational Psychology

    AbstractThe article offers the author's view of the psychological mechanism for the development of a child. It is regarded as the process of ripening and resolving of fundamental contradictions between the child's system of relations and modes of activity acquired by him. Underlined by the author is the objective nature of ontogenetic development as well as the role of child's motivation as a driver of necessary transformations of the child's activity leading to his psychological growth. The similarities and differences between the author's approach and that of D. B. Elkonin are precisely traced. The author’ arguments are supported by a lot of evidence from the theory and practice of developmental and educational psychology with special focus on the role of social institutions

    A generalization of the binary Preparata code

    AbstractA classical binary Preparata code P2(m) is a nonlinear (2m+1,22(2m-1-m),6)-code, where m is odd. It has a linear representation over the ring Z4 [Hammons et al., The Z4-linearity of Kerdock, Preparata, Goethals and related codes, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 40(2) (1994) 301–319]. Here for any q=2l>2 and any m such that (m,q-1)=1 a nonlinear code Pq(m) over the field F=GF(q) with parameters (q(Δ+1),q2(Δ-m),d⩾3q), where Δ=(qm-1)/(q-1), is constructed. If d=3q this set of parameters generalizes that of P2(m). The equality d=3q is established in the following cases: (1) for a series of initial admissible values q and m such that qm<2100; (2) for m=3,4 and any admissible q, and (3) for admissible q and m such that there exists a number m1 with m1|m and d(Pq(m1))=3q. We apply the approach of [Nechaev and Kuzmin, Linearly presentable codes, Proceedings of the 1996 IEEE International Symposium Information Theory and Application Victoria, BC, Canada 1996, pp. 31–34] the code P is a Reed–Solomon representation of a linear over the Galois ring R=GR(q2,4) code P dual to a linear code K with parameters near to those of generalized linear Kerdock code over R

    Reconstruction and analysis of the Chukchi Sea circulation in 1990–1991

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 115 (2010): C08023, doi:10.1029/2009JC005453.The Chukchi Sea (CS) circulation reconstructed for September 1990 to October 1991 from sea ice and ocean data is presented and analyzed. The core of the observational data used in this study comprises the records from 12 moorings deployed in 1990 and 1991 in U.S. and Russian waters and two hydrographic surveys conducted in the region in the fall of 1990 and 1991. The observations are processed by a two-step data assimilation procedure involving the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (employing a nudging algorithm for sea ice data assimilation) and the Semi-implicit Ocean Model [utilizing a conventional four-dimensional variational (4D-var) assimilation technique]. The reconstructed CS circulation is studied to identify pathways and assess residence times of Pacific water in the region; quantify the balances of volume, freshwater, and heat content; and determine the leading dynamical factors configuring the CS circulation. It is found that in 1990–1991 (high AO index and a cyclonic circulation regime) Pacific water transiting the CS toward the Canada basin followed two major pathways, namely via Herald Canyon (Herald branch of circulation, 0.23 Sv) and between Herald Shoal and Cape Lisburne (central branch of circulation and Alaskan Coastal Current, 0.32 Sv). The annual mean flow through Long Strait was negligible (0.01 Sv). Typical residence time of Pacific water in the region varied between 150 days for waters entering the CS in September and 270 days for waters entering in February/March. Momentum balance analysis reveals that geostrophic balance between barotropic pressure gradient and Coriolis force dominated for most of the year. Baroclinic effects were important for circulation only in the regions with large horizontal salinity gradients associated with the fresh Alaskan and Siberian coastal currents and the Cape Lisburne and Great Siberian polynyas. In the polynyas, the baroclinic effects were due to strong salinification and convection processes associated with sea ice formation.Panteleev, Proshutinsky, Nechaev, and Zhang were supported by the NSF ARC‐0632154 award.     Investigation of the summer Kara Sea circulation employing a variational data assimilation technique

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 112 (2007): C04S15, doi:10.1029/2006JC003728.The summer circulations and hydrographic fields of the Kara Sea are reconstructed for mean, positive and negative Arctic Oscillation regimes employing a variational data assimilation technique which provides the best fit of reconstructed fields to climatological data and satisfies dynamical and kinematic constraints of a quasi-stationary primitive equation ocean circulation model. The reconstructed circulations agree well with the measurements and are characterized by inflow of 0.63, 0.8, 0.51 Sv through Kara Gate and 1.18, 1.1, 1.12 Sv between Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, for mean climatologic conditions, positive and negative AO indexes, respectively. The major regions of water outflow for these regimes are the St. Anna Trough (1.17, 1.21, 1.34 Sv) and Vilkitsky/Shokalsky Straits (0.52, 0.7, 0.51 Sv). The optimized velocity pattern for the mean climatological summer reveals a strong anticyclonic circulation in the central part of the Kara Sea (Region of Fresh Water Inflow, ROFI zone) and is confirmed by ADCP surveys and laboratory modeling. This circulation is well pronounced for both high and low AO phases, but in the positive AO phase it is shifted approximately 200 km west relatively to its climatological center. During the negative AO phase the ROFI locaion is close to its climatological position. The results of the variational data assimilation approach were compared with the simulated data from the Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM) and Naval Postgraduate School 18 km resolution (NPS-18) model to validate these models.This research is supported by the Frontier Research System for Global Change, through JAMSTEC, Japan, and by the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs (under cooperative agreements OPP-0002239 and OPP-0327664 with the International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks).     Unraveling Mechanisms of Transcriptional Repression: Novel Insights from Brinker

    Transcriptional repressors bind cis-regulatory elements of target genes in a sequence specific manner. To antagonize transcription, repressors primarily function by recruiting accessory proteins, co-repressors, which in turn largely function by modifying chromatin structure. Although a repressor could function by recruiting just a single co-repressor, many recruit more than one, with Brinker (Brk) from Drosophila recruiting the co-repressors, CtBP and Groucho (Gro), in addition to possessing a third repression domain, 3R. Previous studies indicated that Gro is sufficient for Brk to repress target genes in the wing imaginal disc, questioning why it should need to recruit CtBP, a ’short-range’ co-repressor compared to Gro that can function over longer distances. To resolve this I have used genomic engineering to generate a series of endogenous brk mutants that are unable to recruit Gro, CtBP and/or have the 3R domain deleted. Analysis of these mutants reveals that while the recruitment of Gro is necessary and is almost sufficient for Brk to make a morphologically wild-type fly, it is insufficient during oogenesis where Brk must utilize CtBP and 3R to pattern the egg-shell appropriately. Gro insufficiency during oogenesis can be explained by its downregulation in Brk-expressing cells through phosphorylation downstream of EGFR signaling, thus making it unavailable for Brk which must then resort to CtBP and/or 3R for repressive activity. The present study dissects the mechanism of activity of a transcription factor and its co-repressors and is the first to do so in multicellular eukaryotes in a physiologically relevant manner; additionally its findings provide a better understanding of why transcription factors in general may utilize more than one co-repressor

Автор проводит мысль о том, что техногенный характер процесса обучения раскрывает веер возможностей между двумя крайними альтернативами: дегуманизацией образования с приобретением машиноподобной сущности субъектами образования и, с другой стороны, использованием преимуществ цифровой педагогики с реализацией человеческого потенциала при непрерывном их труде. Предлагаются элементы техники безопасности в техногенной образовательной среде.The article discusses the fate of modern Russian education and especially its subjects in conditions of active digitalization. The author conducts the idea that the technogenic nature of the learning process reveals a fan of opportunities between two extreme alternatives: the dehumanization of education with the acquisition of a machine-like essence by the subjects of education and, on the other hand, the use of the advantages of digital pedagogy with the realization of human potential with their continuous work. Safety elements are offered in man-made educational environment
