The networks of Chinese community in Milan
The aim of this work is to give a theoretical and methodological contribution to the use of networks in migration studies. Strength of ties, multiplicity, density, expressive and instrumental links, cooperative and competitive relations are important concept for analysing the transformations of Chinese community in Milan. While in the ‘80s, the community was dense and cohesive and for newcomers was easier to improve their economical situation, in the ‘90s the situation has become more problematic. The ancient Chinese area, Canonica Sarpi, has become the service area with a lot of ethnic shops and the newcomers tend to concentrate in more peripheral areas, like Monza Padova, where they start leather or clothes manufactures. In the two areas there are different level of integration and conflict with the Italian local population. Within this general situation, the individual manipulate his/her social network in different ways in order to reach economical and social integration. The last one is generally attained through the scholastic career of children, that often act as brokers in the relations between their parents and the local population and institution
Lo sviluppo del distretto tecnologico di Genova tra relazioni informali, associazioni e politica
After having experienced an economic crisis in the 80s, the town of Genoa has greatly changed its economic structure. Among other major activities, informatics and electronics are increasing their importance. Besides some big companies, many small amd medium size firms are developing in these industries. This paper amis to describe the economic situation of small firms within informatics and the personal networks of entrepreneurs, underlining the different role that strong and weak ties play in the everyday survivak and growth. Moreover, the network among institutional actors is described, focusing on the most central actors, an economic association and the Regional administration. The first one has promoted the creation of the technological district and the development of relations among firms, the second one has given formal recognition to the district itself
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A case of inequality in the labour market: the situation of EU and non-EU migrants
Recent studies have shown that the economic crisis of 2008 has heavily affected migrants, thus exacerbating a disadvantage already present in many countries and
further weakening the position of migrants in the labour market. This paper focuses on two distinct groups of migrants: EU citizens and those from third, «non-EU».
In our opinion, the legal status of «European» should provide some advantages on the labour market, compared with the situation of non-EU citizens. In particular, we
focus on the effects of the economic crisis on unemployment risk, occupational prestige and income, from the crisis up to 2014

A case of Declining Social Cohesion: Italy in the New Century
The aim of the essay is to propose an operational definition of immigrant entrepreneur and to make a clear distinction between employers and self employed. This distinction affects not only the creation of jobs, but also the competitiveness of enterprises, as it has been shown by a vast literature on the Italian small business. So far the available literature has always studied these two categories together, leading to an overestimate of the creation of immigrant entrepreneurship and to an underestimate its potential role in the domestic economy. Using institutional data it is possible to state that the immigrant entrepreneurial density (rate of immigrant firms over total firms in a given area) is positively correlated not only with GDP at local level, but also with available indicators of social integration. Using a sample of 200 entrepreneurs and self-employed immigrants, the main socio-demographic differences between self employed and employers are studied, as well as the availability of three forms of resources: economic, cultural and social capital (measured through a socio metric section of the interview). This analysis reveals that differences between these two groups have to be found in the availability of entrepreneurial resources – primarily social capital, and secondarily economic capital, whose availability depends on the first – while differences in demographic and social characteristics, including levels of formal education, do not differ significantly. As a matter of fact, immigrant entrepreneurs, compared to self-employed, can rely on a larger network of contacts having higher occupational prestige. In addition, the availability of social capital affects the firm’s ability to face the present economic crisis. In addition, data show different competitive strategies. While entrepreneurs focus primarily on the quality of products and services provided, self-employed are more dependent on subcontracting and rely on cost containment. The analysis of opinions is consistent with these findings and reveals that entrepreneurs are more optimistic about their chance to outcome the crisis, while self-employed are more pessimistic and envisage the idea of getting back to work as employees
