Exploring beliefs and perceptions towards Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS) in motorcycle safety
The study applied the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to explore motorcycle riders’ underlying behavioural, normative, and control beliefs towards Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS). Each belief was explored in terms of three categories of technologies, (i) advanced technologies that help riders manage riding according to situations and conditions, (ii) advanced technologies that help riders to stop, and (iii) advanced technologies that help riders to corner. Eight focus groups were conducted with 39 motorcycle riders (Mage = 44.54 years, 27 males) who resided in Australia. First, participants completed a short online questionnaire which asked demographic information (e.g., age, gender, riding experience), before taking part in a 50-minute semi-structured online focus group. Participants’ knowledge of ARAS differed depending on the type of technology, with most participants reporting good to excellent knowledge of cruise control and standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) and a poor to fair understanding of selectable riding modes and cornering ABS. For behavioural beliefs, two common advantages reported for all three categories of technologies were safety and that the technologies would benefit new riders or riders with less experience. The three common disadvantages included concerns over riders’ reliance on the technologies, cost, and loss of skill or false sense of security. For normative beliefs, participants reported that their loved ones (i.e., partner, family, and friends) would approve of them using these technologies, with participants perceiving that ‘purists’ (i.e., riders who prefer to ride traditional motorcycles) would disapprove. For control beliefs, cost, lack of information on the safety of advanced technologies, and not being able to switch off systems were reported as barriers to use. Lowering insurance premiums, education/test rides, technologies as selectable options, and availability, were all identified as factors that would encourage use of ARAS. By providing information about ARAS, riders will become more informed about ARAS, which may enhance trust and user acceptance. Additionally, ongoing research and development are essential to ensure the evaluation and improvement of ARAS and mitigate any unintended consequences.Safety and Security Scienc

Zinc Signaling in Neuronal Tolerance
Sub-lethal preconditioning stimuli can confer neuronal tolerance by triggering the activation of endogenous survival pathways that limit or resist subsequent injury. Recent evidence has demonstrated that neuroprotection is paradoxically dependent on the sub-lethal activation of cell death mediators. As intracellular Zn2+ accumulation has been closely associated with neuronal cell death pathways, I tested the hypothesis that neuronal tolerance is also dependent on sub-lethal Zn2+ signals. I found that preconditioning triggered an immediate transient rise in neuronal free Zn2+, while lethal excitotoxicity led to a delayed accumulation of the metal. The sub-lethal rise in Zn2+ was necessary and sufficient in attenuating subsequent Zn2+-dependent toxicity in preconditioned neurons. Chelating Zn2+ during the preconditioning stimulus restored the lethal excitotoxic accumulation in neuronal Zn2+ and abolished neuronal tolerance. These data suggested that preconditioning-induced Zn2+ could trigger mechanisms for preventing subsequent Zn2+-dependent cell death. Indeed, preconditioning triggered protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent Zn2+-regulated gene expression in neurons. Examination of the mechanism involved in modulating Zn2+-regulated gene expression revealed a surprisingly early role for PKC in directly modifying the intracellular source of Zn2+. A conserved PKC phosphorylation site was identified at serine 32 of the metal binding protein metallothionein, which was important in modulating Zn2+ regulated gene expression and ultimately conferring neuronal tolerance. In addition to modulating gene expression, Zn2+ signals may also be important in mediating the acute cellular response to stress. Here, I found a critical role for the transient Zn2+ rise in modulating changes in voltage-gated potassium channel activity and localization following ischemia. Together, these data strongly suggest that a transient rise in neuronal free Zn2+ is an important early signal in conferring neuronal tolerance and in mediating acute cellular adaptive responses to stress. Thus, Zn2+ is a previously unrecognized, highly regulated signaling component in the initiation of survival pathways in neurons
The trematodes of fish of the transboundary Aras Dam Reservoir
In 2015–2018, in three localities representing the main ecological conditions of the Aras Dam Reservoir, 233 fishes of 19 species were studied by the method of complete helminthological dissection: Caspian roach – Rutilus caspicus, Caspian asp – Leuciscus aspius, Kura gudgeon – Romanogobio persus, Aras khramulya – Capoeta sevangi, Chаnari barbel – Luciobarbus capito, Kura barbel – Barbus laserta, South Caucasian bleak – Alburnus hohenackeri, Kura bleak – A. filippi, South Caspian spirlin – Alburnoides eichwaldi, bream – Abramis brama, golden carp – Carassius gibelio, common carp – Cyprinus carpio, Angora loach – Oxynoemacheilus angorae, South Caucasian spined loach – Cobitis satunini, catfish – Silurus glanis, mosquito fish – Gambusia affinis, zander – Sander lucioperca, round goby – Neogobius melanstomus, and bighead goby – Ponticola gorlap. As a result, 20 trematode species of two orders, nine families and 12 genera were found: Sanguinicola inermis, Bunodera luciopercae, Phyllodistomum elongatum, Orientocreadium siluri, Allocreadium isoporum, A. markewitschi, A. transversale, Acanthocreadium araxicum, Sphaerostomum bramae, Diplostomum chromatophorum, D. commutatum, D. helveticum, D. mergi, D. nordmanni, D. paracaudum, D. spathaceum, Tylodelphys clavata, Posthodiplostomum cuticola, Ichthyocotylurus pileatus, and Clinostomum complanatum. Of these, seven species were found in the fish intestine, and seven species in the lenses of eyes. Other organs had one trematode species each. One species is a specific parasite of catfish, one is a parasite of various predatory fish, seven species are parasites of cyprinid fish, and 11 species are parasites of fish of different families. According to the flow rate and the development of aquatic vegetation, the Aras Dam Reservoir can be divided into three parts. Eleven trematode species were found in the upper part, 17 species in the middle part, and 14 species in the lower part. The species richness is facilitated by the slow current and aquatic vegetation development, which attracts intermediate and definitive hosts - mollusks, crustaceans, fish, and birds. Among the trematodes found, nine species are fish pathogens, and one species is dangerous to human health if released into the digestive tract

A New Historicist Reading of Power Mechanism in Dystopian Novels: the Fixed Period by Anthony Trollope, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Anthony Trollope, Anthony Burgess ve Kazuo Ishiguro tarafından yazılan sırasıyla The Fixed Period (1882), A Clockwork Orange (1962) ve Never Let Me Go (2005) romanları Yeni Tarihselcilik teorisi kullanılarak incelenmiştir. The Fixed Period, A Clockwork Orange ve Never Let Me Go, sırasıyla sömürgecilik, gençlik suçları ve bilimsel söylemlerin ürünleridir. The Fixed Period (1882), A Clockwork Orange (1962) and Never Let Me Go (2005) written by Anthony Trollope, Anthony Burgess, and Kazuo Ishiguro, respectively have been analysed using the critical theory New Historicism. With the application of this theory, the relationship between the text, the biography of the author, and the social, cultural, and political conditions of each period have been revealed through a careful study. The novels provide profound information about their periods as textual products of their culture and discourse. The Fixed Period, A Clockwork Orange, and Never Let Me Go are products of colonial, juvenile delinquency, and scientific discourses respectively. This study reveals that each novel reflects the contemporary and foremost social issues of their periods. As dystopian novels, they reflect the anxieties regarding social issues. Contemporary literary texts and non-literary texts have been used in order to find out the dominant ideology of each period. To understand the cultural and intellectual history of three different periods better, Stephen Greenblatt's and Michel Foucault's theories and arguments about power, ideology, and discourse have been taken as basis regarding the function of power mechanisms that circulate throughout the society. The dissertation has shown that power relations and control mechanisms change from period to period in line with social and cultural changes in societies. Human beings not only dominated the nature but also each other. The dissertation puts forward that mechanisation, technology, and science all were thought to increase the life standards of people and contribute to the welfare of society. However, such developments contributed to the creation of more control mechanisms
