    ARTIS: Advanced RTI System

    No full text
ARTIS: Advanced RTI System The Advanced RTI System (ARTÌS) is a middleware for Parallel and Distributed Simulation (PADS) supporting massively populated models. The middleware provides to system modellers an easy-to-use software tool in which is possible to build simulation models that can be executed using a sequential (monolithic) or parallel/distributed approach. On top of ARTIS, the Generic Adaptive Interaction Architecture (GAIA) framework provides an environment in which the simulation entities are adaptively clustered based on their communication patterns. The aim of this mechanism is to reduce the communication overhead of the PADS and to improve the Load Balancing of the execution architecture. In practice, GAIA offers to the final user a clear and elegant paradigm for the implementation of simulation models. The software, that is free for educational and research purposes, can be downloaded from the research group website: http://pads.cs.unibo.it on the same website is possibile to find some documentation on the usage of the sofware and the FAQs. Direct links for software download: http://pads.cs.unibo.it/download/artis/ARTIS-2.0.0.tar.bz2 (GNU/Linux, 32-bit version) http://pads.cs.unibo.it/download/artis/ARTIS-2.0.0_x86-64.tar.bz2 (GNU/Linux, 64-bit version) The last version of ARTIS (version 2.0.0) integrates both the middleware, the GAIA framework, many simulation models and all the necessary scripts and tools for the evaluation of complex systems. The most part of this software is provided in both binary and source code versions. The ARTIS/GAIA software has been described/used in the following research papers (PARTIAL LIST): BOOK CHAPTERS - L. Screening by coral green fluorescent protein (GFP)-like chromoproteins supports a role in photoprotection of zooxanthellae

Green fluorescent protein (GFP)-like pigments are responsible for the vivid colouration of many reef-building corals and have been proposed to act as photoprotectants. Their role remains controversial because the functional mechanism has not been elucidated. We provide direct evidence to support a photoprotective role of the non-fluorescent chromoproteins (CPs) that form a biochemically and photophysically distinct group of GFP-like proteins. Based on observations of Acropora nobilis from the Great Barrier Reef, we explored the photoprotective role of CPs by analysing five coral species under controlled conditions. In vitro and in hospite analyses of chlorophyll excitation demonstrate that screening by CPs leads to a reduction in chlorophyll excitation corresponding to the spectral properties of the specific CPs present in the coral tissues. Between 562 and 586 nm, the CPs maximal absorption range, there was an up to 50 % reduction of chlorophyll excitation. The screening was consistent for established and regenerating tissue and amongst symbiont clades A, C and D. Moreover, among two differently pigmented morphs of Acropora valida grown under identical light conditions and hosting subclade type C3 symbionts, high CP expression correlated with reduced photodamage under acute light stress

Celso Furtado y la economia de Venezuela: subdesarrollo con abundancia de divisas

The two essays of Celso Furtado on the Venezuelan economy represent a deep analysis of the economic reality of the Caribbean country; of the nature of its underdevelopment, dependent above all from the oil exploitation by the multinational societies; of the contradiction among underdevelopment and abundance of currencies, that favours the growth of the parasitical income; of the public spending and the difference between salaries and labour productivity; of the tools that he proposes to allow the development of the country.

The author estimates Riccobono’s main theories on the subject of possession, particularly with reference to the problems concerning the distinction between possession and detention and the distinction civiliter-naturaliter possidere. The study suggests the possibility of new perspectives of investigation but at the same time shows that Riccobono’s contribution to the subject still marks a milestone for any future research

Effects of low lung volume ventilation on respiratory mechanics and nitric oxide exhalation in normal rabbits

Exhaled NO (NOe), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF) in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and lung mechanics were assessed in 8 closed and 8 open chest, normal anesthetized rabbits undergoing prolonged (3-4 h) mechanical ventilation (MV) at low volume with fixed tidal volume (10 ml/kg). Low volume ventilation increased lung quasi-static elastance (Est; 267 and 281%), airway (Rint; 471 and 382%) and viscoelastic resistance (Rvisc; 480 and 294%), and decreased NOe (-42 and -25%) in closed and open chest animals, respectively. After restoration of normal end-expiratory volume (EEV), Rvisc returned to control, Rint remained elevated (120 and 31%), and NOe low (-25 and -20%), whilst Est increased (23%) only in closed chest animals, being associated to interstitial edema. In contrast, after prolonged MV with normal EEV, there were no changes in lung mechanics and NOe in 16 additional closed and open chest rabbits. After prolonged MV, TNF was undetectable in serum, while its concentration in BALF was low (48 pg/ml) and similar in all groups of animals. Thus, cyclic opening-closing of peripheral airways and uneven stresses with low volume MV, that cause epithelial damage and rupture of alveolar-bronchiolar attachments (D'Angelo, E. et al. J Applied Physiol 2004; 97:260-268), result in reduced NOe and increased Rint. These alterations are not mediated by a proinflammatory process as indexed by TNF levels

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine for Hybrid Light Aircraft

    No full text
This paper presents the design of a Permanent Magnet synchronous machine for integration into hybrid propulsion system of a light aircraft.A performance analysis to satisfy the power deficit between propeller and Internal Combustion Engine was carried out. A machine with surface permanent magnets and concentrated windings has been designed. The goal was to define a motor focusing on the key points of performance and reliability. A carbon fiber sleeve has been inserted in rotor core in order to guarantee the holding of the magnets at high speed and ensure even higher reliability. Requirements are fully satisfied at rated and peak power and the motor encumbrance is within the imposed values. Moreover, a thermal analysis of the liquid cooled machine has been carried out in order to verify the temperatures during its operation
