L'aria innocente. Geronimo Gatta e le sue fonti

    No full text
This essay deals with the physician Geronimo Gatta, author of a treatise on the plague in Naples in 1656 and with his library, which includes the classic sources of the Ancient Medicine, many treatises written at the end of Sixteenth century, as well as the aphorisms on plague written by Santorio Santorio (De statica medicina, 1634). The essay highlights also how Gatta, thanks to his direct experience and his readings, elaborates an etiology of the plague well founded and without ambiguities: he resolutely denies any value to the miasmatic paradigm, even if anyway he tries to do it without contesting Galen explicitly. The treatise shows a certain disappointment about how the epidemic had been dealt with and clarifies the lessons that can be drawn from the event. The physician does not quote any scientist prominent in Naples but it is highly probable that he was influenced by them

According to some chroniclers, the tragic death of Masaniello failed to bring real advantages to the Neapolitans. Undoubtedly, it sowed panic and rapidly seemed a confi rmation for sceptics, inside and outside the peninsula. If Ma- saniello, after his reconciliation with the viceroy, the Duke of Arcos, enter-tained for a few hours the dream of becoming a trustworthy servant to the Duke and of receiving in exchange valuable protection, some documents lead us to see a much more complex story of his last days. Th is article provides a more detailed account of those circumstances than that given by the author in her recent biography of the famed fishmonger.

This book is a first analysis of the all works written by Pietro Andrea Canoniero (1582-1639); I'd like to mention his manual of 'Politics' (Introduzzione alla Politica, 1614) and his commentary on Hippocrates' Aphorisms (1618), that was not written for physicians but for 'politicians'. What did Hippocrates teach princes and their ministres? Canoniero's wide culture (he was a physician, a philosopher and a deep knower of the practical politics), and his long stay in one of the cities that lived more directly the troubled history of that time - Antwerp - are some of the reasons that help us to understand the rare richness of Canoniero's works, in which the Protestant and the Catholic worlds are often compared
