City, Retail and Consumption
City, Retail and Consumption focuses on changing urban spaces through the interpretative key offered by retail and consumption, between globalization processes and the embeddedness in local contexts. The book is the outcome of the fourth international seminar organized by geographers from various countries (Brazil, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain) and enriched by the contributions of specialists (architects, urban planners, engineers, economists) and stakeholders. It collects almost fifty texts written after a fruitful debate not only about theories, approaches and methods but also about the practical implications of the urban planning for shopping and consumption places. The case studies range from Sao Paulo to Presidente Prudente, from Buenos Aires to Mexico City and again from Barcelona and Lleida to Lisbon, Paris, Ankara, Copenhagen and many Italian cities. Through different scales of analysis, the contributors have indeed paid their attention on relevant issues to urban studies: resilience, sustainability, dialectic between public and private spaces, impact of e-commerce in urban areas, residential and retail gentrification, neoliberalism and the right to the city

Developing previous research carried out on retail and consumption geographies of young people in Barcelona and Naples, we will focus on the importance assumed, in the production of the city center, by youth consumption of products, spaces and times (of night and weekend). An in-depht analysis will focus on the role of these urban actors in creating, changing, negotiating and contesting, often in conflict with other actors, the nightscapes of retail and consumption. The transformation of the two neighbourhoods of Raval (Barcelona) and Chiaia (Naples) into districts of consumption and night-time entertainment will be the starting point for a reflection on night-life as field of study in urban geography and by now as an essential area of intervention for urban policies
Le città mediterranee tra autenticità e ibridazioni
The paper aims at analysing the link between urban regeneration, consumption and tourism at the Mediterranean scale. Focusing in particular on the cities of Southern Europe and examining a range of narratives on their post-industrial transition, the paper considers two phenomena in order to interpret the most recent changes: the brandification and eventification of their Mediterranean cityscapes
Retail Changes and Consumption Practices in the Neighbourhood of Vomero, Naples
Th e article focuses on the Neapolitan neighbourhood of Vomero, whose most recent transformations can be eff ectively read through the lenses of retail and consumption geography. In greater detail, the evolution of the neighbourhood will be briefl y outlined through a long-lasting look on its retail change, from its urbanization to the current confi guration of a fabric modifi ed by new consumption practices, in turn generated by the diff erent demands of (old and new) inhabitants and users. The fi eldwork research, which took place on a selected core-area and was articulated into various moments – site visits, with the emotions and perceptions they aroused; mapping, to reconstruct the spatial organisation of retail and entertainment activities; indepth interviews with privileged witnesses; analysis of local commercial policies – will allow to exemplify how the neighbourhood escapes the simplicity of some urban thesis on local-global dialectic. Even in a micro-space which has been the symbol of innovation and separation from the rest of Naples, the commercial core is disputed among various actors. At the scale of the polarizing nodes of the neighbourhood, the retail
changes and the consumption practices – although not induced by top-down project or branding policies – highlight new tensions between forms of innovation and of embeddedness
