    La ricerca analizza l’operato dei centri settoriali e di sviluppo locale promossi dalla Regione Lombardia allo scopo di sostenere le proprie politiche di trasferimento tecnologico. Dai dati raccolti emerge l’esistenza un fenomeno, già riscontrato in altre esperienze regionali, definito di “selezione avversa”, in base al quale i centri per il trasferimento sono sempre più identificati dai clienti potenziali come utili alle imprese tecnologicamente più arretrate, ma non in grado di assistere quelle più attive sotto il profilo innovativo. Questa situazione prefigura la specializzazione da parte dei centri nell’erogazione di servizi reali al tessuto produttivo, quali prove di laboratorio, certificazione della qualità e formazione professionale, ma anche l’abbandono di fatto di uno dei compiti di trasferimento tecnologico all’origine della tutela loro offerta dalla Regione. Se i centri sembrano infatti avere trovato in questo modo una loro missione economicamente sostenibile, la Regione ha però perso uno degli strumenti fondamentali attraverso cui intendeva sostenere un’autonoma politica tecnologica

    Heparin was extracted and purified from normal human plasma, and full characterization of its structure and physico-chemical properties was achieved for the first time. Plasma was submitted to exhaustive proteolytic treatment with papain, trypsin, chymotrypsin, collagenase and pepsin, anion-exchange chromatography and precipitation with organic solvents. By this procedure, we recovered heparin (about 0.7 mg/100 ml of plasma) and chondroitin sulfate (about 0.1 mg/100 ml of plasma). Chondroitin sulfate has a peak molecular mass of about 15 630, and it is composed of about 60% nonsulfated disaccharide, 3.5% disaccharide 6-monosulfate and about 40% disaccharide 4-monosulfate, with a sulfate-to-carboxyl ratio of 0.41. Heparin, identified by agarose-gel electrophoresis, is constituted by about 40% slow-moving component and about 60% fast-moving species. This glycosaminoglycan had a peak molecular mass of about 7000, and was identified as 'typical' heparin by its constituent disaccharide composition. About 70% of disaccharides were identified as trisulfated disaccharide, and about 18% as disulfated disaccharides, 3% as monosulfated disaccharides and 10% as nonsulfated disaccharide. Heparin extracted from normal human plasma has a high sulfate-to-carboxyl ratio (2.47) and in vitro anticoagulant activity of about 70 I.U. A more quantitative and statistical analysis performed on 10 ml of plasma obtained from 10 human healthy volunteers revealed a heparin level of 0.54 +/- 0.17 mg/100 ml plasma (mean +/- standard deviation) with a coefficient of variation of about +/- 32%. These findings demonstrate for the first time the presence of heparin molecules in normal human plasma and confirm the importance of adequate extraction processes to purify a molecule that strongly interacts with plasma protein components. This is discussed in light of other authors that described a polysaccharide molecule named heparan sulfate in human plasma

    Out-of-plane rocking mechanisms represent one of the major causes of damage and failure for unreinforced masonry buildings, monuments and churches leading to significant economic and social losses every year in many regions throughout the world. Due to their slenderness, masonry walls subjected to rocking mechanisms can show large displacements before the complete overturning. Therefore, seismic analyses should consider geometrical nonlinearities, requiring more complex formulations and increasing the computational effort. This paper applies a recently proposed P-Delta formulation of the discrete macro-element method (DMEM) to analyse the seismic behaviour of masonry façades interacting with lateral walls. The model accounts for geometrical nonlinearities considering the P-Delta effects by updating the load vector at each step of the analysis, avoiding assembling and updating the geometrical stiffness of the system. In addition, the capability of the model to describe the coupled in-plane and out-of-plane wall responses allows for describing spatial failure mech-anisms. The presented study aims at quantifying the role of the P-Delta effects in conjunction with the cohesive-friction connections between the façade and lateral walls on the ultimate rocking of the external façade. These effects are here investigated through pushover analyses on a church façade. The analyses are conducted on a global model, accounting for brick interlocking, and on a simplified model, including only the façade where ad hoc calibrated non-linear links simulate the interaction with the lateral walls. The results show that geometrical nonlinearities affect the façade’s response even at relatively low-magnitude displacements, with increasing influence as the quality of the façade-to-lateral-walls connections reduces

Outsourcing has increasingly become a distinguished feature of the recent evolution of industrial districts and it constitutes the object of this study. The study focuses on the industrial district of Castel Goffredo in the region of Lombardy, Northern Italy, which is the largest European manufacturing area specialized in tights. It analyses the determinants of outsourcing as a function of firms’ specific characteristics and how they affect the geographical reach of outsourcing relations. This firm-level analysis allows one to grasp the impact of firm heterogeneity on the outsourcing decision

    An undiagnosed pleural effusion with surprising consequences

    We present the case of a 43-year-old Italian woman with a left undiagnosed pleural effusion, which in subsequent months presented a clinically unexpected evolution with the appearance at first of a right wrist tenosynovitis and subsequently a bilateral lung involvement caused by M. Tuberculosis. With this case report, we would like to underline the importance of making a correct diagnosis of any pleural effusion as soon as possible by at least a thoracocentesis. If untreated, tuberculosis may easily disseminate to other organs. Some considerations and suggestions for antibiotic treatment of pleural effusion will also be given, since many antibiotics have some anti-tuberculosis effect and may delay the diagnosis of this infectious disease
