Iman Peoples Water Sovereignty: Extractive Industries in Central Queensland
The coal seam gas (CSG) industry has rapidly expanded in the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) over the past two decades, significantly impacting groundwater ecosystems and Indigenous communities that rely on these water sources for cultural, spiritual, and practical purposes. This article examines the intersection of Water Sovereignty, extractive industries, and key issues such as Social License to Operate (SLO), Indigenous Peoples' rights, informed consent, and the legal doctrine of Aqua Nullius. Through an Indigenous perspective, this research illuminates the multifaceted dimensions of water governance and the complexities that arise from the interactions between Indigenous stakeholders, industries, and regulatory frameworks. Through interviews with Elders of the Iman Peoples in central Queensland, the research highlights how current SLO frameworks neglect Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and fail to uphold ethical standards necessary for protecting Indigenous cultural continuity. Water security is a primary concern, with Traditional Owners emphasizing the need to safeguard surface and groundwater for future generations. This research informs policy at local and national levels while contributing to global discussions on Indigenous sovereignty, environmental justice, and cultural heritage protection. Towards a collective effort to preserve and protect springs
Over the past several decades, various anthropogenic activities have resulted in degradation of spring water quality and quantity and their sensitive ecosystems. Numerous studies around the world have documented these detrimental impacts to springs and their associated aquifers due to habitat alteration, groundwater depletion, pollution (from agricultural fertilizers, wastewater disposal, mining, urbanization, and climate change. These impacts to springs have negatively affected human health and ecological systems, and the livelihood of people that depend on springs for their cultural, recreation, and aesthetic values. This volume has provided detailed examples of threatened springs in diverse hydrogeologic settings, relevant information on innovative methods for better understanding the hydrogeology of spring systems, and policy and governance approaches for protecting springs now and for the future. It is our hope that the information in this volume will help to stimulate practitioners, policy makers, scientists, and the public to work together to actively preserve and protect springs and restore impaired spring waters. An effective approach for protecting springs should include continuous monitoring of water quality and quantity; collaboration among scientists, stakeholders, and governmental agencies to develop effective local and regional springs protection strategies, and sufficient funding for current and future scientific research, especially regarding impacts from climate change.No Full Tex
Protecting springs in a changing world through sound science and policy
For many communities, springs represent, both literally and symbolically, a source of life. Springs have long been sites of spiritual significance for many of the world's Indigenous peoples and remain so today. They figure prominently in stories, songs, fables, and artworks throughout the world's cultures. Sadly, mounting evidence has emerged showing that many of the world's springs are in decline, and numerous springs have either been lost or rendered inactive. With new and emerging pressures created by global climate change and ever-increasing demands to develop water, mineral deposits, and land for economic purposes, the threat of degradation of springs is likely to intensify, leading to significant harm for many people and ecological communities. Carefully developed policies and management plans will thus be needed to safeguard springs and their incalculable values across diverse geological, climatic, and anthropogenic settings. These must be informed by high-quality scientific data collection and analysis programs, extensive community participation, and effective monitoring, reporting, and governance.No Full Tex
Springs of the southwestern great Artesian Basin, Australia: Balancing sustainable use and cultural and environmental values
The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) is one of the world's largest groundwater systems and supports a wide variety of springs, associated ecosystems, and cultural values. Historically, groundwater was extracted from the GAB with little regard for sustainable management, with much of the groundwater from artesian bores wasted through evaporation and seepage. By the late twentieth century, agriculture still dominated groundwater extraction; however, water use for mining and petroleum projects began increasing, a trend that continues. In particular, the Olympic Dam mining project in South Australia has been extracting groundwater since 1983 from a wellfield located on the southwestern margins of the GAB, an area containing a vast array of culturally significant, ecologically unique, and sensitive springs, including iconic mound springs. The extraction rate has increased over time, leading to concerns about impacts on the springs and their associated values. There are plans to expand the mine that would potentially increase the extraction rate further. This chapter reviews the hydrogeological setting of the springs of the southwestern GAB and their cultural and environmental values and synthesizes and analyses the available groundwater monitoring data associated with the wellfield. The case highlights the critical importance of detailed spatial and temporal hydrogeological monitoring, including both spring flow rates and groundwater level/pressure data, and the need to link monitoring and management of such sites to key cultural and environmental values.No Full Tex
Celebrating a pioneer in geochemical tracer science for groundwater and surface water research: Professor Ian Cartwright
Over a more than 35-year career Professor Ian Cartwright's research has provided advances in the understanding of a wide range of earth-science processes, from metamorphic geology to palaeo-climates, groundwater hydrology, catchment hydrology and geochemistry. His research has predominantly utilised geochemistry, stable and radioactive isotope tracers to understand links between palaeo-climate and groundwater, geochemical processes impacting on groundwater and surface water quality, and metamorphic processes. He has made outstanding contributions to scientific knowledge and training through mentoring numerous PhD and masters students, journal editorial roles – including as a long-time Associate Editor for Applied Geochemistry, and active participation in conferences, professional societies and working groups – such as the Applied Isotope Geochemistry group and the International Association of Geochemistry. As he moves into retirement, we take the opportunity to summarise his impact and contributions across many scientific disciplines and reflect on the significance of his distinguished career.Full Tex
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
