Isaias Curiel Interview
Isaias Curiel (Class of 2024) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions on April 5, 2024. He majored in finance. Born in Texas in 2002 as the youngest of five children, Mr. Curiel was raised with a strong Catholic and Mexican cultural background. He attended an early college high school in the Dallas area and started his academic journey at the University of Texas at Arlington during the COVID-19 pandemic before transferring to Southern Methodist University. During his time at SMU, he joined Beta Upsilon Chi, a Christian fraternity, and frequented the campus Catholic Center, where he met many of his friends. In addition to studying finance, Mr. Curiel ran a business with his brother while he was still a student, and recalls that his most memorable experience was getting to study abroad in Europe
The importance of having data-sets.
Much scientific research is based on the gathering and analysis of measurement data. Scientific data-sets are, at least, intermediate results in many scientific research projects. For some time data-sets weren’t even published and even if they were published it was mostly as a (not re-usable) by-product of the publication. But an interesting phenomenon might be observed here: data-sets (often in combination with models and parameters) are becoming more important themselves and can sometimes be seen as the primary intellectual output of the research. Publishing and preserving data-sets should therefore seriously be considered. This will especially be the case if the data cannot be reproduced (as they result from unique events) and will be necessary in the future for longitudinal research or to test or check future insights

As time progressed, bridges that were rated using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) analytical load rating methods began to show lower load capacities than those that the bridges have proven to carry through load testing alternatives. This is especially true for reinforced concrete (RC) slab bridges which have complicated load path distributions and often benefit from load tests. This has resulted in unnecessary roadway restrictions, bridge closures, and other inconveniences to the communities that rely on these bridges for daily commute. Consequently, to provide better accuracy, the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE) offers the option of conducting load rating using field testing as an alternative to analytical computing rating factors for bridges.
In this study, diagnostic and proof load field tests are performed on two RC slab bridges to study the feasibility and constraints of using bridge load testing as a load rating method. AASHTO MBE and Effective Strip Width (EW) load rating approaches are used to compare results with AASHTO analytical load rating procedures. The results demonstrate the advantages to load testing over less reliable analytical load rating procedures. To reduce the complexity, time, and cost associated with instrumenting bridges for load testing, the study explores the feasibility of performing load tests using image-based techniques. Images of loaded bridges captured using consumer-grade cameras are used to monitor the displacement of the bridges during testing. The results from the field and laboratory studies show compelling results when compared to conventional Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) sensors. Furthermore, the studies show that image-based bridge monitoring techniques have great potential in conducting quick and cost-effective field-based load ratings of bridges. The research also investigates alternative approaches to field tests for structural monitoring of bridges. A satellite image-based technique is explored to evaluate the potential of this technology to measure small displacements in bridges. Moreover, the technique is applied to three different bridges to validate the approach and the simplicity of its application for bridge monitoring. The results show promising potential in the method to be used as a structural health monitoring strategy for bridges
Both the construction of our object of research on the choice of the novel in question were carried out during the development of our empirical research before directed to research the relationship between science and literature in the life of that writer. It happens that the interest on the case of Memories came when we began to investigate the process of intellectual insertion of Lima Barreto and its relation to the way in which his works were received by his contemporary critics. In this sense, the critical reception of Memories in required special attention: First, because it is the work with which Lima Barreto chose to launch his writing career; second, because this attempt to launch and state were established in three corresponding to the work publications times (1907, 1909, 1917); third, because the last edition of the work was funded by the author, as it seems to have made an author's reaction to the way his novel had been read and suitable for its contemporary interpreters. In this sense, the main question of our research interest revolves around the tense negotiation process between cultural producers who held different positions in the world of letters, and the corresponding editions of the work in question. Lima Barreto not exempted to participate in the different stages of this process of negotiation and dialogues with different agents, and strategies exercised by him around the dispute over the valuation of his work takes a heuristic character for understanding that process. We use primary sources such as diaries, correspondence, and chronic writer's works as well as the periodicals of the time in order to recapitulate the stages of that negotiation. Finally, we focus on the agencies of the various cultural producers involved in that process and in particular the Lima Barreto, in order to understand to what extent the public sense of a work is built on dissent on the type of valuation (social, polítical , literary) possible to be awarded. Vallissiana universitaria Pereira & Arévalo-Maldonado & Triberti & Brito & Isaias & Gonçalves & Moreira 2019, sp. nov.
Vallissiana universitaria Pereira & Arévalo sp. nov. (Figs. 2–9) Diagnosis. V. universitaria is similar to Gracillaria albicapitata Issikii and G. syringella (Fabricius) in forewing pattern, but easily distinguished from them by the venation and the male genitalia. Male genitalia show affinity with all species of Aspilapteryx in the shape of the valva, with a deep concavity in the ventral margin and a rounded ventroapical lobe. However, in V. universitaria the phallus is straight, not with more or less helical curves, with the exception of the South African A. seriata (Meyrick). Some similarity exists with Sabulopteryx inquinata Triberti due to the presence of a finger-shaped process on the mesal surface at the basal third of the valva. However, the shape of the valva is completely different, with the ventral margin almost straight in S. inquinata. The female genitalia are very similar to those of A. spectabilis Huemer, A. multipunctella (Chretien) and A. magna Triberti by the simple sterigma and a wide ostium bursae located at posterior margin of eighth segment. However, in V. universitaria the ostium is placed more posteriorly, on the intersegmental membrane between the seventh and eighth segments, and there is only one signum on the corpus bursae. Description of adult (Figs. 2, 3). Forewing 3.8 – 4.0 mm (n = 5) long. L/W index 6.4. Head. The impact of gastrectomy on diabetes and related conditions, coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, and survival: follow-up from the Honolulu heart program
Rationale for the study Gastric surgery is coming into widespread use to treat obesity, but the effects of these operations for health in old age are not known. Here we examine the long term effects of partial gastrectomy which was used in the 20th century to treat peptic ulcers and shares features with some of today’s bariatric (weight loss) operations. We compare long-term outcomes in 347 men with a partial gastrectomy who were subjects in a prospective study of 8006 American Japanese men in Honolulu with their non-operated peers. Methods Subjects were age 45-68 at the baseline examination in 1965-68 and survivors were assessed for diabetes and insulin resistance 25 years later. Incidence of heart attacks and strokes was ascertained from hospital records and incidence of cancer was obtained from the Hawaii Tumor Registry. Mortality data were collected by the state health department. Results Mean weight for the men with a prior gastrectomy was 11 pounds less than for their peers, a difference that persisted throughout. A substantially larger proportion of the gastrectomy group smoked cigarettes. At enrollment, the gastrectomy men had lower serum cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and blood pressure than the other men. These differences also persisted except for blood pressure which increased more over time in the gastrectomy men than in the others. At the 25 year exam, systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in the gastrectomy men. The gastrectomy men had a 50% lower incidence of diabetes and significantly less insulin resistance than their peers. There was no difference in the occurrence of coronary disease, but stroke incidence and mortality were both higher in the gastrectomy group. Mortality from smoking related causes (lung cancer and emphysema) were also increased. Stomach cancer was decreased by more than half after controlling for confounders. Conclusion The protection against diabetes is consistent with other reports and appears long-lasting and robust. “Remnant” stomach cancers that have been reported after gastrectomy were not found. The increase in blood pressure and stroke is worrisome and suggests the need for evaluation of this potential problem following the several bariatric surgical procedures now in widespread use.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Isaias Noel Gendrano II
Designing mobile inquiry-based learning activities: Learners’ agency and technological affordances
Recent discourse and research studies on mobile learning showed increasing awareness of the complexity of mobile learning in the digital age. Notwithstanding mobile devices, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies have greatly empowered learners and educators to overcome the constraints of conventional education, such as time, space, location and to learn on the move. However, balancing technological dependency and learner autonomy remains an area of contention in designing meaningful mobile learning activities. Hence, this interactive and participatory workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on this issue to share their experience and to engage in facilitated activities and discussions on designing mobile learning activities that effectively balance learners’ agency with mobile technology. Additionally, this workshop also provides a platform for unsolved challenges and future research directions on smart technology and smart learning spaces in the context of mobile learning, laying the groundwork for joint research efforts.Web Information System
WEB-Based Control of Embedded Systems
Embedded Systems such as Network Attached Storage devices and DSL Routers can often be enhanced in order to perform additional autonomous computing tasks. This paper describes a method of interacting with and controlling such computations via an application running on a remote PC that serves as both the user interface and controller for applications running on networked embedded systems. Support for complex GUI standards such as X-Windows is not required, nor is a complicated Remote Procedure Call mechanism used. Instead, all interaction between the systems uses the HTTP protocol. Full-duplex and asynchronous interaction is made possible by running a web server not only on the target system, but also within the control application. The author has implemented the concepts discussed in this paper and a sample application called WEB32 will be demonstrated
