Natural Risks Exposure and Hazard Avoidance Strategies: Learning from Vesuvius
One of the major corroborations related to catastrophic events originated by geological, hydrological and atmospheric phenomena is that global population growth and its concentration in large urban areas has been increasing risk exposure exponentially. For this reason, working strategically towards a more aware and intelligent location of residential buildings should be a priority in order to reduce the effects of natural disasters. After introducing hazard avoidance strategies in general, the essay describes the two most common approaches: the land use regulatory approach based on building constraints and bans; the incentive approach based on managed retreat and relocation programs. Subsequently, the essay introduces the subject of volcanic risk in Italy and expressly the case of the Mount Vesuvius hinterland, an extremely hazardous and highly populated area where local authorities have prepared innovative and detailed ‘housing decompression’ plans and projects. In conclusion the essay discusses the inefficacy of these experiments because of social and political infeasibility connected to (overlooked) risk perception issues and cultural biases

Measurement issues in the study of Flashbulb memory
The problem of measuring Flashbulb memory (FBM) is one of the key issues in the investigation of the phenomenon. Researchers have differently assessed FBMs with respect to the different theoretical views they have adopted. Both explicitly and implicitly, measurement models of FBM have carried significant assumptions about its nature and inclusion in the general domain of autobiographical memory. The chapter firstly provides an overview of the different measurement models adopted in assessing FBMs, by showing to what extent categorical models have increasingly appeared to offer a more satisfactory account of the phenomenon than traditional dimensional models. Subsequently, a brief outline of the peculiarities of both dimensional and categorical models will allow the reader to evaluate their appropriateness in the investigation of FBMs. Finally, from both the theoretical and empirical point of view, similarities and differences between FBMs and ordinary autobiographical memories are considered. Categorical models appear to best account for FBMs as particularly vivid and detailed memory formations, and this conclusion has significant implications for a general model of autobiographical memory
