Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Radio Remote Sensing and Imaging of Lightning
Lightning is one of the most familiar, impressive, but catastrophic natural phenomena that occur commonly on Earth. It produces perhaps the loudest sound, the most broadband radio emission, and the brightest light in the atmosphere. However, lightning remains relatively poorly understood since it is so transient (usually 20 MeV) associated with lightning, photonuclear reactions triggered by lightning, and needle-like plasma structures on the positive lightning leader, connecting lightning as part of atmospheric physics to high-energy physics, plasma physics, etc.This dissertation aims to address fundamental questions like how lightning initiates and propagates, and how are TGFs related to lightning processes, by applying state-of-the-art radio remote sensing and imaging techniques. We measure and analyze electromagnetic signals produced by lightning from the vicinity to more than a thousand miles away, at radio frequencies from VLF, LF, to VHF and UHF. First, we investigated LF/VLF lightning sferics at the time of TGFs and found a statistically consistent connection between a slow LF pulse (~80 duration) and TGFs, suggesting that the radio pulse is produced directly by the TGF production process. Second, in light of the slow pulse-TGF connection, we discovered a new type of downward CG-TGF with a reverse positron beam detected by Fermi GBM on the orbit, which could constitute 5--10 % of the previously known TGF population. Third, we employed supervised and unsupervised machine learning approaches to classify energetic lightning radio pulses for unprecedented ground detection of TGFs as well as understanding lightning sferics and ionospheric effects. In the meanwhile, we developed a short-baseline VHF interferometer with 200 MHz bandwidth to image lightning channels in high spatiotemporal resolution, shedding new insights into needles and lightning leader dynamics. Last but not least, we demonstrated and applied a new approach to indirectly measuring electric fields in the discharge region during lightning initiation and positive leader propagation using VHF-UHF radio spectrum, enabling an entirely new and useful capability for probing the ambient condition during lightning discharge processes. Implications of the estimated electric fields for lightning physics and high-energy physics are discussed.</p
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Design of non-destructive methodologies for the evaluation of skeletal integrity of SCWL laying hens
Studies were undertaken to assess the effects of various nutritional programs on subsequent productivity and skeletal status throughout the laying cycle. Non-destructive methodologies were evaluated to carry out assessments in-vivo and study structural changes in the bone associated with feed regimen and productivity. Combinations of dietary treatments were formulated to provide a range in levels of calcium, available phosphorus and crude protein that are representative of industry feeding programs. As the level of calcium and available phosphorus were increased early in lay positive carry-over effects were observed on egg production, eggshell quality, and skeletal integrity. At the end of lay, early dietary phosphorus inclusion level increased egg weight (P .05). Humeral bone mineral density (mg/cc) was more closely correlated with humeral speed of sound (m/s) (R2 = .43-.46, P .05). There were no dietary effects on cortical bone mineral density measured with Axial X-Ray Micro-Computed Tomography (micro-CT) for layers at 66 weeks of age (P > .05). Differentiation between trabecular and medullary bone in the femoral cavity was not possible due to similar radiographic densities for both of these bone types
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. ELF sferic energy as a proxy indicator for sprite occurrence
Broadband ELF/VLF measurements of sferics near Ft. Collins, Colorado, demonstrate that ELF sferic energy is a proxy for sprite occurrence which can be used to estimate the number of sprites produced by a thunderstorm. Ultra-long range (~12,000 km) measurements at Palmer Station, Antarctica, confirm the application of this proxy to storms where no video observations of sprites are available. Comparison with high-resolution photometer measurements demonstrate the simultaneity of sprite luminosity and an ELF "second pulse" believed to be radiated by electrical currents within the sprite body [Cummer et al., 1998]. Measurements of the second ELF pulse are used to identify a quantitative relationship between the current in sprites and total sprite luminosity

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
