Most of the studies on Qian Zhongshu's life and work focus exclusively on his three major monographic works, On the Art of Poetry, The Tube and Awl Chapters and Fortress Besieged. In the Chinese cultural setting, however, articles are regularly published about other texts in which the author has expressed his thoughts throughout his life. One of the fields in which Qian Zhongshu has been most active, besides the field of comparative literature, is the field of translation studies. This article attempts to fill a gap in the Euro-American academic environment, collecting the thoughts of Qian Zhongshu on the art of translation, a contribution which, although published in a series of separate texts, enables us to consider him one of the most significant theorists of translation studies

Qian Yong yu Qian Jia Dao shi qi de bei tie juan ke =: Qian Yong and the making of stele engraving and model-calligraphyin the mid-Qing period
Ph.D.The making of stele engraving (bei) and model-calligraphy (tie) is an important issue in the cultural development of traditional China. The main purpose of stele engraving is to record important events or recognize distinctive merits, while the carving of model calligraphy is to preserve and eternalize calligraphic works. These two forms of engraving serve as good references for the understanding of the social-cultural situation of the related historical era. The mid-Qing period, or the Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang reigns, is a period during which the empire enjoyed its golden age and began to decline; and in the history of Chinese calligraphy, this period is usually described as a transitional stage where the “bei” school took over position of the “tie” . By closely scrutinizing the engraving of “bei” and “tie” of this period, it is possible to gain a better understanding of the stylistic development of calligraphy and lives and culture of the literati. This thesis takes Qian Yong (1759-1844) as the figure for case study, considering that he was extremely active and productive in the making of stele engraving and model-calligraphy. As a famous calligrapher but low-ranking literary man, Qian Yong was commissioned and at the same time proactive in the carving or re-carving of a large amount of stele and model-calligraphy. Through these engravings, he was able to build up good relationships with high-ranking officials and distinguished scholars, and eventually achieved fame and wealth in the elite circle. As such, Qian Yong is a perfect case for the study of the social history of art in mid-Qing in the perspective of the activities of “bei” and “tie” carvings. This thesis first overviews the practice of making stele engraving and model-calligraphy in Mid-Qing, and gives an account of the life, career choice, and calligraphy of Qian Yong. It then discusses Qian Yong’s activities related to stele engraving and model calligraphy works, including both commissioned and self-initiated ones. Finally, this thesis looks into the status of Qian Yong as a stone engraving expert, and makes assessment of it, in addition to how Qian Yong made efforts to improve his image in the literati circles. Parallel title from added title page.Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2019.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 195-205)."2019年8月".Title from PDF title page (viewed on February 22, 2022).Yao Ling

Gendering the Planchette: Female Writer Qian Xi's (1872–1930) Spiritual World
Abstract
Fuji (wielding the planchette, or spirit writing) was in vogue among Ming-Qing literati, and its influence extended into modern times. Existing studies focus on this popular divination itself or on men's writings related to this practice. This article, instead, explores the poetry and prose of a female writer, Qian Xi, and her writing activities associated with this divination. Qian claims that the spirits she communicated with include several female immortals and her deceased husband. Some of the questions the author explores are: What are the characteristics of Qian's writings? What inspired Qian to participate in spirit writing? What role did this practice play in Qian's life and writing? Regarding the emotions, thoughts, and works of Qian, what types of information can spirit writing and corresponding poetic and prosaic compositions provide? Instead of simplifying and disregarding the ritual of wielding the planchette as bizarre, superstitious, or even mad, the author argues that it played a meaningful role in shaping Qian's literary images and enhancing her literary productivity. More important, Qian Xi's strategies of using spirit writing to stimulate her literary creations was significant in meeting her emotional needs, highlighting her identity as a talented woman, and demonstrating the worth of her very existence.</jats:p
