Oral History Interview with Roy Cudd, March 19, 1997
Interview with Roy Cudd, a Navy WWII veteran of the USS Bougainville (CVE-100, an escort carrier) from Denton, Texas. Cudd discusses his family life, their reaction to the start of war, enlisting in the Navy and boot camp, assignment to the Bougainville, duties aboard ship and daily life, missions in the Pacific, the Okinawa Typhoon, combat, initiation as a "shellback," kamikazes, liberty, ranking up, and the end of the war
[Hiram Cudd standing by truck]
Photograph of a man, identified as Hiram Cudd, standing in front of a large truck belong to Cudd Bros. Trucking. He is wearing a light-colored uniform and a dark hat. There are houses in the background. Handwriting on the back of the photograph reveals that the house in the background was Hiram Cudd's parent's house and briefly describes its history

A simplified fast interface for the use of CUDD for Binary Decision Diagrams
We developed a tool, named simpleCUDD, to unify and simplify the use of Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs).
The Colorado University Decision Diagrams library (CUDD) is an efficient library for BDDs. However it is difficult to use CUDD from external applications.
To overcome this difficulty we developed a unified and simple interface (simpleCUDD) for applications using BDDs.
SimpleCUDD makes the use of CUDD much easier while it retains all of the efficiency and the power of CUDD. It can be seen/used as an equivalent of the C++ interface of CUDD, but simpleCUDD was developed completely in C to keep it fast and as portable as possible.
Both the generation of the BDD and the traversal of BDDs have been simplified. The user does not need any longer to write code to specify the underlying function of the BDD, instead the user describes the function more naturally as a script. Traversing the resulting BDD has been simplified with the use of node history and dedicated functions. Furthermore, simpleCUDD adds extra functionality like BDD description files, named variables, traversed node history, node value assignment and finally an efficient saving method for the generated BDDs.
The new saving algorithm has been compared with the existing methods (DDDMP) for result validity and performance. SimpleCUDD performs equally well in most cases and for some functions, especially more complex ones, better than DDDMP.
SimpleCUDD has been used successfully in applications like: ProbLog (Luc De Raedt et al.) and LeProbLog (Bernd Gutmann et al.).
Future work consists in improving further the BDD saving algorithm, and develop a Prolog library for using simpleCUDD directly from Prolog.status: Publishe
The Constraints Within Capitalism: An Evaluation of Ann E. Cudd\u27s Enlightened Capitalism in \u27Capitalism, For and Against\u27
There is extreme partisanship in the United States regarding whether or not capitalism should continue to be implemented. This partisanship is apparent in Capitalism, For and Against: A Feminist Debate, by Ann E. Cudd and Nancy Holmstrom. The published debate between Cudd and Holmstrom ultimately discusses whether systemic changes can be placed upon capitalism for an ideal enlightened capitalism , presented by Cudd, or if the United States should adopt a new economic system altogether, suggested by Holmstrom. I address Ann E. Cudd\u27s argument for an enlightened capitalism by summarizing her main ideas, and proceed to refute it on the grounds that her four defining conditions of capitalism: 1) private ownership of capital, 2) free wage labor, 3) decentralized open markets, and 4) the nondiscrimination constraint, fail to include profit maximization, an element considered inherent to capitalism by many economists, including Adam Smith. By excluding profit maximization as a defining condition, Cudd not only neglects to present an empirically accurate description of capitalism, but she also disregards the inequality and harm that follow from this condition. Hence, I ultimately argue that a capitalist system should not be implemented in the United States because its inherent conditions debilitate its participators
An Anytime Algorithm for Generalized Symmetry Detection in ROBDDs
Detecting symmetries has many applications in logic synthesis that include, amongst other things, technology mapping, deciding equivalence of Boolean functions when the input correspondence is unknown and finding support-reducing bound sets. Mishchenko showed how to efficiently detect symmetries in ROBDDs without the need for checking equivalence of all co-factor pairs. This work resulted in practical algorithms for detecting classical and generalized symmetries. Both the classical and generalized symmetry detection algorithms are monolithic in the sense that they only return a meaningful answer when they are left to run to completion. In this paper we present anytime algorithms for detecting both classical and generalized symmetries, that output pairs of symmetric variables until a prescribed time bound is exceeded. These anytime algorithms are complete in that given sufficient time they are guaranteed to find all symmetric pairs. Anytime generality is not gained at the expense of efficiency since this approach requires only very modest data structure support and offers unique opportunities for optimization so the resulting algorithms are competitive with their monolithic counterparts
Barriers and facilitators to uptake of assistive technologies: summary of a literature exploration
This paper aims to highlight some of the issues that arise with the uptake of assistive technology as found in the literature across four different domains: Telehealth; Telecare; Augmentative and Alternative Communication; and Education. The authors were not looking so much at service delivery models as user centred experiences and key words that were used to describe outcomes. The results showed remarkable similarities in the concerns of patients, families, users and other stakeholders. However, different terminologies across the fields highlighted the gulf between the fields, with professional 'silo-ing' of expertise occurring. There is a necessity for increased collaboration that could allow for knowledge sharing and enhanced assessment, uptake and continued use of assistive technologies for all potential users
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
