Contrappunti intermediali.
The Norwood operation performed with the heart beating and no prosthetic materials
The Norwood procedure performed with the heart beating is a useful and attractive way to perform the stage I palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It allows completion of the surgical procedure without stopping the heart and without using deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest. Therefore it could be an attractive solution for reducing the adverse effects of the operation and the rate of postoperative complications. Moreover, this technique avoids the use of prosthetic materials, thus minimizing long-term complications and reoperations, and promotes a more physiological growth of the anatomical structures. However, the high level of expertise required to perform this type of complex neonatal procedure with the heart beating may be limited to only a few centers in the world thus far
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Development and Validation of a Control-Oriented Analytic Engine Simulator
Due to the recent anti-pollution policies, the performance increase in Spark Ignition (SI) engines is currently under the focus of automotive manufacturers. This trend drives control systems designers to investigate accurate solutions and build more sophisticated algorithms to increase the efficiency of this kind of engines. The development of a control strategy is composed of several phases and steps, and the first part of such process is typically spent in defining and investigating the logic of the strategy. During this phase it is often useful to have a light engine simulator, which allows to have robust synthetic combustion data with a low calibration and computational effort. In the first part of this paper, a description of the control-oriented ANalytical Engine SIMulator (ANESIM) is carried out. The latest results about the zero-dimensional knock model presented in a previous paper and some interesting analytical equations which define the main mean-combustion indexes trends (for example maximum in-cylinder pressure, or Pmax, 50 percent fuel mass fraction burned angle, or MFB50, Indicated Mean Effective Pressure, or IMEP) as functions of engine speed and load are analyzed for the entire engine operating range. A detailed sensitivity analysis to the fitting order is presented and the final formulas are showed and used for the calibration. The second part focuses on the model implementation in a Simulink environment and the resulting validation process of the analytic simulator carried out on a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Turbo Charged (TC) engine. ANESIM performance is then tested by comparing the calculated and the experimental data, for both steady state and transient operating conditions
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
On the characterization of materials and masonry walls of historical buildings: Use of optical system to obtain displacement maps in double-flat jack tests
Among the testing techniques aiming at the mechanical characterization of masonry, the double flat-jack testing method is widely adopted to identify the local value of significant parameters needed to perform structural analyses, such as elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and compressive strength. The experience gained from many applications has allowed not only to collect experimental data concerning different types of masonry, but also to highlight the difficulty in the interpretation of the results and the limitations of both single and double flat-jack tests. Although the accuracy of the flat-jack technique in detecting strength and deformability behavior of masonry is still debated in the technical literature and practical activities, changes in the testing procedure aiming at ascertaining the validity of the test results have not been formally defined yet. After a brief description of the standard test procedure and its uncertainties, the present paper proposes an upgrade of the test procedure for improving the level of reliability of the test results. In particular, an experimental case study related to a historical brick masonry building located in Italy is presented to point out the additional information necessary to validate the results of the testing process
