    Analysis of surface runoff in the upper reaches of the river basin Anil River in São Luís - MA

    The present work aimed to analyze the surface runoff in the upper course of the Anil river basin, located in the city of São Luís/MA, with an area of 9.07 km². The specific objectives were: to assess land use and land cover; to physiographically characterize the upper course of the basin; identify the Curve Number of the area through the analysis of physiographic and climatological data of the area; identify the surface runoff of the area; and compare and validate this data through infiltration tests. To achieve these objectives, two research stages were carried out, namely, desk work and field work. In the first stage, activities were carried out for research planning, elaboration of maps, bibliographic analysis and writing of the text. In the second stage, fieldwork was carried out to get to know the area, take photographic records and carry out infiltration tests. After this stage, returning to the cabinet stage, graphs of the data obtained from the infiltration tests were prepared and the statistical analysis of the data generated with the tests was performed. 40 tests were carried out to obtain the values of accumulated infiltration, which were used as potential for water storage in the soil (S). The Curve Number (CN) technique was used, and surface runoff was estimated for the upper course with the aforementioned technique and infiltration tests. The data indicated that the runoff rates are lower than those identified with the infiltration test in vegetated areas and with exposed soil. The values obtained with the infiltration tests range from 24.2mm to 89.89mm for hydrological group B in vegetated areas and from 0 to 121.88mm in areas of exposed soil. The values of surface runoff in the same vegetated areas and with exposed soil obtained with the CN technique were, respectively, 42.45mm and 116mm. Regarding hydrological type D, the rates identified were from 2.55mm to 74.33mm for vegetated area and from 12.48mm to 100.8mm for areas with exposed soil. From the CN technique, the data generated for the same hydrological type D were 77.22mm and 107.7mm respectively. The tests with the highest runoff rates generated were respectively 14, 17, 20, 29 and 40, which were located in areas with exposed soil with CN ranging from 78 to 95, obtaining values greater than 100mm for precipitation of 139.4mm. The statistical analysis performed using the Spearman Correlation Matrix indicated that there is a very weak positive correlation between the surface runoff data generated by the CN technique and the infiltration tests carried out in vegetated areas and with exposed soil, generating a value of 0.037.O presente trabalho teve por objetivo analisar o escoamento superficial no alto curso da bacia hidrográfica do rio Anil, localizada na cidade de São Luís/MA, com área de 9,07 km². Os objetivos específicos foram: avaliar o uso e cobertura da terra; caracterizar fisiograficamente o alto curso da bacia; identificar o Curve Number da área através da análise de dados fisiográficos e climatológicos da área; identificar o escoamento superficial da área; e comparar e validar esses dados através de testes de infiltração. Para alcance destes objetivos foram realizadas duas etapas de pesquisa, a saber, trabalho de gabinete e trabalho de campo. Na primeira etapa, foram realizadas atividades de planejamento da pesquisa, elaboração dos mapas, análise bibliográfica e escrita do texto. Na segunda etapa foram realizados trabalhos de campo para conhecer a área, fazer os registros fotográficos e realizar os testes de infiltração. Após essa etapa, voltando à etapa de gabinete, foram elaborados gráficos dos dados obtidos com os testes de infiltração e feita a análise estatística dos dados gerados com os testes. Foram realizados 40 testes para obter os valores de infiltração acumulada, sendo estes utilizados como potencial de armazenamento de água no solo (S). Foi empregada a técnica Curve Number (CN), sendo realizada a estimativa de escoamento superficial para o alto curso com a técnica supracitada e com os testes de infiltração. Os dados indicaram que as taxas de escoamento superficial são menores do que as identificadas com o teste de infiltração nas áreas vegetadas e com solo exposto. Os valores obtidos com os testes de infiltração variam de 24,2mm à 89,89mm para grupo hidrológico B nas de áreas vegetadas e de 0 a 121,88mm nas áreas de solo exposto. Os valores de escoamento superficial nas mesmas áreas vegetadas e com solo exposto obtidos com a técnica CN foram, respectivamente, 42,45mm e 116mm. Em relação ao tipo hidrológico D, as taxas identificadas foram de 2,55mm à 74,33mm para área vegetada e de 12,48mm à 100,8mm para áreas com solo exposto. A partir da técnica CN, os dados gerados para o mesmo tipo hidrológico D foram de 77,22mm e 107,7mm respectivamente. Os testes com maiores taxas de escoamento superficial geradas foram, respectivamente, 14, 17, 20, 29 e 40 sendo estes localizados em áreas com solo exposto com CN entre 78 à 95, com valores maiores que 100mm para a precipitação de 139,4mm. A análise estatística realizada através da Matriz de Correlação de Spearman indicou que há uma correlação positiva muito fraca entre os dados gerados de escoamento superficial pela técnica CN e os testes de infiltração realizados nas áreas vegetadas e com solo exposto, sendo gerado um valor de 0,037

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
