Corporate communications: accounting, linguistics and semiotics
Corporations tend to make many communications about their activities, some of which are required by law and others of which are informative. Needless to say, these corporations wish to make their activities appear in the best possible light. They are therefore carefully crafted to this effect. It is therefore necessary to interpret these corporate communications to get behind the actual words and data reported in order to understand actual implications. Although technical expertise is required to understand the actual financial information being provided, these are always surrounded by words, pictures etc. and this chapter is intended to show how an understanding of appropriate linguistic concepts and the basics of semiotics enables a much fuller understanding of what is being communicated, regardless of the intentions of the corporate representatives creating the communication

Introduction:managing the Pillars of Sustainable Development
Although it is well known that Brundtland states that there are three pillars of sustainable development and that they should be regarded as of equal importance it is argued that they have not been treated as equal with one pillar always predominating. This chapter re-examines the situation and arrives at a definition of sustainability which the authors argue is workable. They do so by redefining the pillars of sustainability and taking into account the combination of factors along with such issues as risk and uncertainty. This chapter therefore provides an introduction to the topic of the book and serves as a precursor to the ensuing chapters.</p
Introduction:social entrepreneurs and social change
This chapter discusses the origins of social entrepreneurship and the history. It sets this within our understanding of the current world, postmodern breaks with the norms of the market and definitions and redefinitions of community within society. It discusses a number of features and theories which may explain the way such enterprises have become more significant with society and have permeated the globe. In doing so, this chapter acts as an introduction to this volume and sets the scene for the extended discussions which comprise the remaining chapters in this volume.</p
