Processes of institutional learning:: a comparative evaluation of learning within economic development organisations in Teesside and Cracow
In an era of significant regional economic disparities, attention is turning away from traditional accounts of regional disadvantage towards the insights offered by institutional and evolutionary economics. Such accounts have highlighted the institutional, social and cultural capabilities that drive regional economic success. One aspect of this literature relates to the theme of institutional learning. In particular, a distinction has been made between incremental and radical institutional learning capabilities. Whilst incremental learning facilitates institutional adaptation to changing economic circumstances through the application of established interpretations and solutions, radical learning requires the development of an 'adaptability' capacity that reflects upon the applicability of past actions and promotes institutional innovations that break with existing understandings. Yet despite the importance attached to radical institutional learning capabilities, the internal organisational factors influencing actual learning processes - especially within the context of public sector bodies - have received little attention. This thesis explores these features through a comparative investigation of the institutional learning processes occurring within public sector based economic development organisations in Teesside, England and Cracow, Poland. The research presents the key arguments made regarding the centrality of learning to the regional rediscovery debate and examines the significance attached to the themes of institutional learning and cognition. Through reference to empirical evidence the research discusses the place specific and historically dependent nature of institutional learning processes and considers the extent to which institutional cognition, organisational memories, management systems and techniques act as barriers or stimuli to radical learning
Blackmailers and shmaltzovniks under the law in occupied Cracow

These surviving cases are a unique historical feature and need to be discussed. These are the stories of: Maria Jawułowa, Helena Loho and Władysław Urbańczyk, Tadeusz Pawlus, Zdzisław Pohorecki, Feliks Kowalski and Aleksandr Radwan, whom the author deliberately mentions by name. Conrad’s Cracow
This article discusses Joseph Conrad’s links with Cracow, the historic capital of Poland and a major centre of Polish culture. Conrad fi rst came to Cracow in February 1869, accompanied by his father Apollo Korzeniowski, who — after several years of exile in northern Russia — had become gravely ill. Conrad visited the city a second time in the summer of 1914, having accepted an invitation from the young Polish politician Józef Hieronim Retinger, and (not without some diffi culty) eventually managed to get himself and his family safely back to Britain after the outbreak of World War I. Both of these sojourns in Cracow played an important role in Conrad’s life — and, one might say, in his creative work as a writer. One of the most vivid memories of his fi rst stay in Cracow was the hero’s funeral given to his father, who had been a victim of tsarist oppression. It was from Cracow that the young Conrad set out for France in order to take up a maritime career in Marseilles. During his second stay in Cracow (and Zakopane) Conrad made the acquaintance of many members of the Polish intellectual elite and took the decision to become actively involved in the cause of Polish independence
THE CRACOW PRESS AS A SUBJECT OF LOCAL PRESS STUDIES
This is a review of the state of research of the Cracow press from its beginnings (ie. occasional newspapers) up to 2009. In his study of the Cracow press the author adopts the concept of local press’ (ie. where the key criterion is that of the place of publication regardless of the outreach). A survey of the publications shows that research into the history of the Cracow press boomed after World War II. As scores of articles, monographs and reports were published, the focus of interest was extended from the old grounds of the early press history, the 19th century and the Republic of Cracow, or the press of the Nazi occupation period to the new fields of the press history of the interwar years 1918–1939 as well as the post-1945 and post-1989 period
The political "Hamlet" according to Jan Kott and Jerzy Grotowski
The article presents political interpretations of Hamlet in Poland in the turbulent period of politcal changes between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s. The author discusses the relationships between Shakespeare’s tragedy and Polish political context as well as the influence of audience expectations in the specific interpretations. The selected performances are: Hamlet by Roman Zawistowski (at the Old Theatre in Cracow 1956) and Hamlet Study by Jerzy Grotowski (at the Laboratory Theatre of 13 Rows in Opole 1964). They both were hugely influenced by major commentators of Hamlet, i.e. Stanisław Wyspiański and Jan Kott. The author argues that up-to-date readings of Hamlet, which started with Wyspiański’s study in 1905, flourished in the mid-1950s and mid-1960s when concerning specific political events: the Polish Thaw of 1956 and March 1968, when the Jews were expelled from Poland. Thus Hamlet of that time was updated and must be seen through the prism of political events

Urbanization of villages near Cracow: selected problems
The object of the author’s research has been to analyse the progress of urbanization in the villages round Cracow.
Upon examining the differences within the network of rural settlements, the changes in the structure of the
population, the increase in the number of non-farming population in villages throughout the District of Cracow, the
author discusses the course of the urbanization processes in eight selected villages round Cracow, from 1960 through
1968.
Dependent on the intensity of some chosen indices of professional and space urbanization, the author has tried to
distinguish three phases of urbanization for the examined villages.
Thus, she assumes as the firsts phase of village urbanization (basic grade) a farreaching professional urbanization
(according to the established indices).
As the second phase of urbanization, she admits, apart from professional urbanization, advancement in the process of
remodelling the technical infrastructure, together with transport junctures, as well as advancement in the
physiognomic-special remodelling.
The third phase of urbanization (the highest) will be distinguished, apart from the previous characteristics, also
by the disappearance or a very strong reduction of the physiognomic and functional features of a farming village and
by its obtaining of the legal status of a town
Multicriterial analysis of the accessibility of public transport stops in Cracow
This study deals with the synthesis of selected attributes of public transport accessibility. The aim is to present a new method of multi-criteria analysis. As the research area, the city of Cracow has been chosen. The GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) system has been used to obtain traffic data for buses and trams within the city‘s transport company (MPK Krakow). The analysis itself consists of 4 main accessibility indicators (walking time to each stop, number of lines, directions, and connections from each stop). The problem of exceeding the stops accessibility beyond the administrative border of Cracow has been solved by using a 500 m wide buffer zone around the city. To connect the individual layers of indicators into a multicriteria analysis, the Voronoi diagram function has been applied. The results of the method are presented in the form of synthetic maps of transport accessibility for each bus and tram stop in Cracow. Together with the synthetic accessibility maps, an index of a stop importance has been created as well, which consists of the sum of the mean percentages from 3 indicators (number of lines, directions, connections). The synthetic method used and acquired detailed values not only for the city of Cracow as a whole, but also its individual parts make it possible to provide a comprehensive picture of accessibility by public transport. This multicriteria analysis can also be extended for a comparative study of selected cities
