Accelerated norm-optimal iterative learning control
No full textThis paper proposes a novel technique for accelerating the convergence of the previously published norm-optimal iterative learning control (NOILC) methodology. The basis of the results is a formal proof of an observation made by the first author, namely that the NOILC algorithm is equivalent to a successive projection algorithm between linear varieties in a suitable product Hilbert space. This leads to two proposed accelerated algorithms together with well-defined convergence properties. The results show that the proposed accelerated algorithms are capable of ensuring monotonic error norm reductions and can outperform NOILC by more rapid reductions in error norm from iteration to iteration. In particular, examples indicate that the approach can improve the performance of NOILC for the problematic case of non-minimum phase systems. Realisation of the algorithms is discussed and numerical simulations are provided for comparative purposes and to demonstrate the numerical performance and effectiveness of the proposed methods

An Evaluation of a Solution Focused Computer Game in Adolescent Interventions
No full textMany adolescents experience difficulties with traditional face-to-face mental health care approaches. Personal Investigator (PI) is a 3D computer game specifically designed for use in adolescent interventions. The game implements a model of Solution Focused Therapy. It aims to assist in easing the difficulties experienced by adolescents with direct face-to-face approaches. In sessions a therapist and adolescent sit together at a computer and play PI. Issues raised in the game serve as a context for more detailed discussions between the therapist and client. This article describes a study in which PI was used with 22 adolescent clients, attending mental health care services due to a variety of difficulties. Whilst further trials are required, results indicate positive benefits of using PI. PI can help in building an effective client—therapist relationship, can assist in structuring sessions, and can assist in improving client engagement in the therapeutic process

Environmental (waste) compliance control systems for UK SMEs
No full textWhile the ‘environment’ is often perceived as a heavily regulated area of business, in reality, directly-regulated businesses represent a small proportion of the business community. This study aimed to evaluate and outline potential improvements to compliance controls for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly those involved in the waste sector. Forty-four SMEs from England were interviewed/audited between April-September 2008. Using a UK-based system as a case-in-point, the Environment Agency’s (EA) Operational Risk Appraisal (‘Opra’)/Compliance Assessment Report (CAR) system was analysed. Environmental compliance performance indicators and an initial assessment methodology for SMEs were developed. The study showed:• Compliance with permitting legislation was poor in many areas.• Regulatory authorities are either unable/failing to implement their enforcement policies or unable/failing to identify non-compliances due to the infrequency or limited nature of their inspections.• Improvements are needed to the EA Opra/CAR system – control measures are not fully taken into account when calculating risk.Recommendations to improve SME compliance controls include using internationally applicable general and specific compliance and non-compliance performance indicators, re-designing the Opra system and using an initial assessment methodology based on understanding the hazardousness of SME categories, compliance levels and operator competency.<br/

Concerned but confused: Australian consumers' awareness, understanding, and recognition of ultra-processed foods
No full textAvailable online 5 July 2025Calls to reduce ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption through population health strategies such as front-of-pack labelling are increasing. Gaining insight into consumer perceptions may help inform effective strategies in this area. This study explored (i) Australian adults' awareness, understanding, and recognition of UPFs and (ii) their interest in front-of-pack labelling to signpost UPFs. Twelve online focus groups were conducted with 112 Australian adults (49% women, 78% residing in metropolitan areas). Discussions covered food selection criteria, familiarity with 'processed' and 'ultra-processed' terminology, ability to recognise UPFs, and views on current and desired availability of processing-level information on packaged foods. Images of foods were used as stimuli to facilitate discussion. An inductive thematic analysis was applied to examine the data. Two key themes emerged: (i) concern but confusion around processing and UPFs, and (ii) support for UPF information provision but uncertainty about feasibility. Participants broadly supported strategies to help consumers identify UPFs and their characteristic ingredients, while noting that low awareness of relevant terminology may limit the effectiveness of labelling approaches without accompanying public education efforts. Participants relied on simple packaging cues to assess processing levels, highlighting the need for transparent and salient labelling strategies. There were concerns that co-locating a UPF front-of-pack label alongside existing health labels could cause confusion, particularly where nutritional quality and level of processing are misaligned. Integrating UPF information into existing labelling systems appeared to be an acceptable approach to support healthier food choices and may alleviate these concerns.
