    Stochastic Differential Equations in Banach Spaces: Decoupling, Delay Equations, and Approximations in Space and Time

    The thesis deals with various aspects of the study of stochastic partial differential equations driven by Gaussian noise. The approach taken is functional analytic rather than probabilistic: the stochastic partial differential equation is interpreted as an ordinary stochastic differential equation in a Banach space. The major part of the thesis deals with approximations of solutions to semi-linear stochastic differential equations. We consider discretizations both in time and in space. We prove optimal convergence rates for pathwise convergence of the implicit-linear Euler scheme. Concerning space approximations, we first prove a perturbation result, which allows us to obtain pathwise convergence of certain Galerkin and finite element schemes in the Hilbert space case. Because we obtain pathwise convergence, we can allow for the non-linearities to be locally Lipschitz instead of globally Lipschitz. Apart from the results on approximations, the thesis also contains a part in which we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a rather general class of stochastic delay equations. Finally, there is a part on decoupling, which is a concept that plays a role when defining the stochastic integral of a stochastic process taking values in a Banach space.Applied mathematicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

    The article is prepared for the 65th anniversary of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Russian and World History, Archaeology of Volgograd State University Sergey G. Sidorov. The article traces the biography of S.G. Sidorov, his pedagogical, scientific, and administrative activities. It is shown that fundamental foundations of the future pedagogical and scientific work of S.G. Sidorov were laid at the Faculty of History of Saratov State University named after N.G. Chernyshevsky, from which he graduated in 1981. Most of Sergey Grigoryevichs life is connected with Volgograd State University, where he has been working since 1986. He combined teaching historical disciplines with the administrative work. S.G. Sidorov was Vice-rector for Academic Affairs for 25 years. Being in this position he has done a lot to make Volgograd State University a leader in the region in training highly qualified specialists. S.G. Sidorov is one of the leading experts on the history of the Great Patriotic War. He is the author of the first fundamental comprehensive study of using labor of prisoners of war of the Second World War in the national economy of the USSR in 1939–1956. With his active participation, six volumes of Documents and Materials “Prisoners of War in the USSR. 1939–1956” were published. Since 2009, S.G. Sidorov has been the Head of the Dissertation Council on Historical Sciences at Volgograd State University. From 2014 to 2020, largely due to the efforts of S.G. Sidorov, Volgograd State University held five International Thematic Scientific Conferences “Military History of Russia: Problems, Searches, Solutions”

    The simulation of free surface flows with Computational Fluid Dynamics

    Computational fluid dynamics is a powerful and versatile tool for the analysis of flow problems encountered in themaritime environment. The University of Southampton Fluid-Structure Interactions research group use ANSYS CFX tomodel a wide variety of flow problems; to gain insight into flow physics, improve designs and increase the efficiencyand safety of marine vehicles. A series of three case studies from on-going research looks at: loads applied on liquefiednatural gas tanks due to sloshing, slamming pressures experienced by high speed craft as well as the influence ofpropellers on the resistance characteristics of autonomous underwater vehicles. The presence of the free surface,complex shapes and the unsteady nature of these applications make their simulation with computational fluid dynamicsparticularly challenging. The successful validation of the computational models has resulted in the development of aselection process for suitable multiphase models as well as cost-effective meshing strategies

    Regularity and convergence analysis in Sobolev and Hölder spaces for generalized Whittle–Matérn fields

    We analyze several types of Galerkin approximations of a Gaussian random field Z: D× Ω→ R indexed by a Euclidean domain D⊂ Rd whose covariance structure is determined by a negative fractional power L-2β of a second-order elliptic differential operator L: = - ∇ · (A∇) + κ2. Under minimal assumptions on the domain D, the coefficients A: D→ Rd×d, κ: D→ R, and the fractional exponent β> 0 , we prove convergence in Lq(Ω; Hσ(D)) and in Lq(Ω; Cδ(D¯)) at (essentially) optimal rates for (1) spectral Galerkin methods and (2) finite element approximations. Specifically, our analysis is solely based on H1+α(D) -regularity of the differential operator L, where 0 < α≤ 1. For this setting, we furthermore provide rigorous estimates for the error in the covariance function of these approximations in L∞(D× D) and in the mixed Sobolev space Hσ,σ(D× D) , showing convergence which is more than twice as fast compared to the corresponding Lq(Ω; Hσ(D)) -rate. We perform several numerical experiments which validate our theoretical results for (a) the original Whittle–Matérn class, where A≡IdRd and κ≡ const. , and (b) an example of anisotropic, non-stationary Gaussian random fields in d= 2 dimensions, where A: D→ R2×2 and κ: D→ R are spatially varying

    Goodness-of-fit tests in the Cox proportional hazards model

    We consider a variety of tests for testing goodness-of-fit in a parametric Cox proportional hazards (PH) model and compare their performance. Aspects of the model under test include the baseline distribution and time-invariance of covariates. We also test for the PH model itself against a certain generalization. This is done through an extensive Monte Carlo study where we simulate the performance of the tests for these three paired hypotheses. The results show that the tests based on the empirical characteristic function and those based on the empirical Laplace transform have the best overall power performance. It is also found that the distributions of the considered test statistics do not depend on the specific functional form of the covariate function. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

The detection relies on redox cycling, in which diffusive molecules rapidly transfer electrons between two parallel electrodes embedded in a thin, solution-filled channel.     Lesion milkshakes, markets and science: bovine tuberculosis policy in Canada, 1895-1922

    This thesis is an examination of federal agricultural policies to address the problem of bovine tuberculosis in Canada between 1895 and 1922. Bovine tuberculosis policies in Canada reveal a significant transformation in the relationship between the federal government and its citizens. This transformation is revealed in the rise of the veterinary profession in Canada and its relationship with the federal government, the focus of bovine tuberculosis policy, and the transformation of the burden of risk witnessed with the implementation of compensation for lost stock beginning in 1914. Canada was heavily involved in cattle trading with the United States and Great Britain between 1895 and 1922. Contagious cattle diseases were a serious concern for both the international and domestic cattle trade. Britain's scheduling of Canada over pleuro-pneumonia in 1892 combined with concerns over other diseases such as rinderpest (cattle plague) and foot and mouth disease led to the development of a system of quarantine measures designed to prevent diseases from entering or leaving Canada. Bovine tuberculosis testing policies became part of these quarantine procedures. Bovine tuberculosis was unique in this period as it was a zoonotic disease. The ability to infect both animals and humans, particularly children, through the consumption of infected meat and milk demanded that bovine tuberculosis be addressed. This was not easily accomplished as the science of bovine tuberculosis was heavily debated. Robert Koch, the noted German bacteriologist who discovered the tubercle bacillus, led this debate. Making the controversial announcement at the International Congress on Tuberculosis in 1901 that bovine tuberculosis posed no danger to humans, Koch questioned not only the science of bovine tuberculosis, but of zoonoses in general. A number of policies were created between 1895 and 1922 to address bovine tuberculosis. They included the Tuberculosis Act (1895), 1903 Order, the Supervised Herd Plan (1905), the Municipal Tuberculosis Order (1914), the Accredited Herd Plan (1919), and the Restricted Area Plan (1922). In the midst of international market regulations about disease and debated science, Canada addressed the problem of bovine tuberculosis and continues to do so in much the same way today. Between 1895 and 1922, Canada's policies transformed to address public health and establish bovine tuberculosis-free zones to ensure disease-free cattle for the international and domestic markets
