Reframing the design of context-aware computing
From location-aware computing to mining the social web, representations of context have promised to make better software applications. The opportunities and challenges of context-aware computing from representational, situated and interactional perspectives have been well documented, but arguments from the perspective of design are somewhat disparate. This paper draws on both theoretical perspectives and a design framing, using the problem of designing a social mobile agile ridesharing system, in order to reflect upon and call for broader design approaches for context-aware computing and human-computer Interaction research in general
Physiotherapists Construction of their Role in Patient Education
Objective. The purpose of this study was to understand how physiotherapists articulate their role in patient education with a view to generating new perspectives, and informing debate and curriculum development.Methods. Physiotherapists (16) associated with one higher education institution (HEI) participated in the study and represented a spectrum of educational experience from novice to expert. A qualitative, interpretive study was based on semi-structured interviews which were analysed using a thematic approach to the total data set followed by deeper analysis of key themes drawing on the principles of interpretative repertoire.Results. Four themes were identified: identification with the patient educator role; preparation for the patient educator role; constructs of teaching and learning; therapeutic relationship. Patient education was constructed as an integral and extensive component of practice. Constructs of teaching and learning included transmission and empowerment. Conflicting repertoires of collaboration and compliance were identified in the therapeutic relationship theme.Conclusion. The need for physiotherapists (and other healthcare professionals) to be alert to discourses present within their own narrative and that of others was highlighted. It was also seen to be important to be aware of a tension between transmission-based constructs of patient education, a repertoire of compliance and the goal of patient-centred care. Further research could be carried out to determine the relationship between individuals’ discursive construction of teaching and learning and the methods they adopt when educating patients

Usability and biometric verification at the ATM interface
This paper describes consumer driven usability research conducted during the development of a biometric replacement to PIN numbers to enable the understanding of usability and user acceptance of leading edge biometric verification techniques. The research considered different techniques for security and identified the need for multiple types of evaluation during the design process. Coventry designed the research method and tools, the user interface to the biometric demonstrations and managed their application over a 3 year period. Usability of security is a key area of Coventry’s human-centred evaluation methods research. The other authors contributed knowledge of previous studies; dynamic anthropometry (Graham Johnson) and statistical analysis for fingerswipe (Antonella de Angeli). The work adds to the body of knowledge on the usability of security methods. It shows how usability techniques can be applied and how user opinion is influenced by many factors other than the design. Coventry was subsequently invited to deliver keynotes at the Biometrics annual conference, the Financial Cryptography conference. Her work led to the book chapter: Coventry, L. Usable Biometrics, Chapter in Crannor, and Garfinkel, S. Usability and Security, 2005. This research was the first to explore usability and user expectations in the evaluation of biometric devices. It influenced the development of biometric technology on ATMs and the role of training, marketing and user lead-through in the successful adoption of the technology. Coventry’s approach has been cited and used in speech technology (Carl Turner), biometrics in the air transportation industry (Prof Angela Sasse), personal photos as pictorial passwords (Thomas S. This 1966 photograph shows Lynne Briggs, age 13, who won the Supreme Folk Dancing Award in the Mountain Youth Jamboree. Founder and director of the Mountain Youth Jamboree, Hubert H. Hayes (1901-1964) auditioned and directed youth to perform in folk dance, music, and folk and ballad singing. The jamboree was held in the Asheville City Auditorium (now known as Thomas Wolfe Auditorium) from 1948 to 1973, and Hayes’ wife, Leona Trantham Hayes (1913-1989) continued to direct the program after his death in 1964. Hubert Hayes was an author, playwright, and alumni of Duke University

Usability tools and the design process
This paper explores the role of evaluation methods within the design process. It addresses the issue of how to predict if a design will be successful in the commercial environment by ensuring the requirements for usability and desirability are all addressed. It identifies three key aspects for consideration within the iterative design – evaluation process; designing for early adopters (which is not the same as designing for the mass market), meeting user expectations and desires for a new product and recognising the impact of behavioural change on uptake of a new product. Research and evaluation methods are a key component of Coventry’s research interests. Her ongoing work seeks to understand the impact of new designs on the mass consumer market. Coventry has worked for several years with the co-author; developing and conducting evaluations of financial self service systems. This paper is a result of a brainstorming session to review evaluation methods; what was working and why. It questions the premise that users are easily defined into groups and that a single design, with a few different features, will fit all and suggests that the people who will first use a product are not necessarily your sustained user base and their expectations and desires are not necessarily the same. The paper is based on a number of design projects within the advanced research group in NCR and was one of the first to explore the role of the research method in successfully predicting the future success of a product and the areas affecting uptake. This work fills the gap between market research and usability evaluation techniques to identify not only if a product will be usable but if it will be acceptable to its future users
Coming to Terms: A Theory of Writing Assessment
In a provocative book-length essay, Patricia Lynne argues that most programmatic assessment of student writing in U.S. public and higher education is conceived in the terms of mid-20th century positivism. Since composition as a field had found its most compatible home in constructivism, she asks, why do compositionists import a conceptual frame for assessment that is incompatible with composition theory? By casting this as a clash of paradigms, Lynne is able to highlight the ways in which each theory can and cannot influence the shape of assessment within composition. She laments, as do many in composition, that the objectively oriented paradigm of educational assessment theory subjugates and discounts the very social constructionist principles that empower composition pedagogy. Further, Lynne criticizes recent practice for accommodating the big business of educational testing—especially for capitulating to the discourse of positivism embedded in terms like validity and reliability. These terms and concepts, she argues, have little theoretical significance within composition studies, and their technical and philosophical import are downplayed by composition assessment scholars. There is a need, Lynne says, for terms of assessment that are native to composition. To open this needed discussion within the field, she analyzes cutting-edge assessment efforts, including the work of Broad and Haswell, and she advances a set of alternate terms for evaluating assessment practices, a set of terms grounded in constructivism and composition. Coming to Terms is ambitious and principled, and it takes a controversial stand on important issues. Untethering an unusual cause of kidney injury in a teenager with Down syndrome
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by the acute nature and the inability of kidneys to maintain fluid homeostasis as well as adequate electrolyte and acid-base balance, resulting in an accumulation of nitrogenous waste and elevation of serum blood urea nitrogen and creatinine values. Acute kidney injury may be a single isolated event, yet oftentimes, it results from an acute chronic kidney disease. It is critical to seek out the etiology of AKI and to promptly manage the underlying chronic kidney disease to prevent comorbidities and mortality that may ensue. We described a case of a 16-year-old adolescent girl with Down syndrome who presented with AKI and electrolyte aberrance.Abdominal and renal ultrasounds demonstrated a significantly dilated bladder as well as frank hydronephrosis and hydroureter bilaterally. Foley catheter was successful in relieving the obstruction and improving her renal function. However, a magnetic resonance imaging was pursued in light of her chronic constipation and back pain, and it revealed a structural defect (tethered cord) that underlies a chronic process that was highly likely contributory to her AKI. She was managed accordingly with a guarded result and required long-term and close monitoring.Peer reviewed
