    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    La construction de sols à partir de déchets encourage la transition d'une économie linéaire vers une économie circulaire en recyclant les matériaux pour produire des sols fertiles pour les communautés. Dans ces travaux de thèse, nous explorons l'incorporation de déchets riches en argiles réactives dans le processus de construction de sol pour mieux comprendre comment la nature des déchets, les propriétés physiques et les méthodes de construction de sol influencent l'agrégation à l'échelle du laboratoire et d’un site-pilote. Les résultats de laboratoire montrent que la minéralogie et la proportion d'argiles incorporées influencent principalement la production d'agrégats de 1 à 3 mm et la stabilité structurale à sec, tandis que l'ajout de compost mature influence principalement les agrégats de plus de 3 mm. Le mouvement rotationnel automatisé d’un disque bouletteur permet un mélange uniforme des déchets et la production significative d'agrégats entre 1 et 5 mm. Ces résultats valident le potentiel d'agrégation de la méthode de construction de sol par bouletage et son principe de fonctionnement. La stabilité structurale humide des agrégats peut être améliorée en augmentant l'humidité dans leurs espaces poreux ou en augmentant l'hydrophobicité globale pour réduire la pression interne des agrégats. L'expérience en pot à l'échelle du laboratoire démontre l'influence de la croissance de la végétation sur l'agrégation du sol. Les racines impactent la formation des agrégats au-delà de 5 mm, et le couvert végétal protège les agrégats de surface évitant ainsi une réduction de la taille des agrégats. Pour cette raison, la mise en place de végétation sur les sols construits peut être très bénéfique, car les racines peuvent favoriser l'agrégation et la stabilité, tandis que la couverture végétale peut protéger la surface du sol, lui donnant suffisamment de temps pour améliorer sa stabilité. L'étude à l'échelle du site-pilote utilise un cylindre bouletteur et examine l'impact des argiles et de la matière organique sur l'évolution de la stabilité des agrégats humides sur sept mois. La teneur en argiles peut être bénéfique pour stabiliser les microagrégats, mais seulement lorsqu'un pourcentage suffisant de compost est ajouté. L'amélioration de la stabilité des agrégats humides dans le temps est un indicateur positif de la viabilité biologique et de la fertilité de ces sols construits. Ceci est encore confirmé par la production de biomasse, principalement corrélée au pourcentage de compost ajouté. Les matériaux parentaux sélectionnés se sont révélés avoir un potentiel d'agrégation élevé et ont fourni un support végétal, remplissant le rôle d'un sol fertile.Soil construction from wastes encourages shifting the paradigm of a linear economy towards a circular one by recycling materials and producing fertile soil for communities. In this thesis work, we explore the incorporation of reactive clay-rich wastes in the soil construction process to further understand how waste materials, physical properties, and construction methods influence aggregation on a laboratory and pilot scale. Laboratory results display that the mineralogy and proportion of incorporated clays mainly influence the production of 1-3 mm aggregates, and the dry structural stability, while mature compost addition mainly influences aggregates over 3 mm. The automated, rotational movement of the pelletizing disc allows uniform mixing of the waste, leaving only 4% of the materials unaggregated, and producing significantly more aggregates between 1 and 5 mm. These results validate the aggregation potential of the pelletizing construction method and its operating principle. Wet structural stability of aggregates can be improved by increasing the humidity in their pore spaces or increasing the overall water repellency through hydrophobicity to reduce the aggregates’ internal pressure. The laboratory-scale pot experiment demonstrates the influence of vegetation growth on soil aggregation. Roots impact the formation of aggregates above 5 mm, and the vegetation cover protects surface aggregates from weathering, thus avoiding a reduction in the size of the aggregates. For this reason, vegetating constructed soils can be very beneficial as roots can promote aggregation and stability, while vegetation cover can protect the soil surface, giving it ample time to improve its stability. The pilot-scale study uses a pelletizing cylinder and examines the impact of clays and organic matter on the evolution of wet aggregate stability over seven months. The clay content can be beneficial in stabilizing microaggregates, but only when a sufficient percentage of compost is added. The improvement of the wet aggregate stability over time is a positive indicator of these constructed soils' biological viability and fertility. This is further confirmed by the significant biomass production, mainly correlated to the percentage of compost added. The selected parent materials are found to have a high aggregation potential and provided plant support, fulfilling their role as fertile soil
